Forty years ago, riots erupted in Detroit. Since then, its all been downhill. The city keeps losing population and the area down the Lodge Freeway, you'll see mile after mile after mile of burnt out housing. Just like out of "Blade Runner." Detroit ain't staging a revival any time soon. As Debbie Schlussel said it, "Osama Bin Laden has a better chance of getting elected President than Detroit gas of arising from the dead." Touche!

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus

Reminds me of the flick “Kentucky Fried Movie,” during the Bruce Lee parody, the villain passes judgment on a poor fellow by saying, “Send him to Detroit!” The guy is dragged away screaming.

And this movie was made in the late 70’s....

Anyone want to see how Detroit has been rotting away. A once great city festers and dies. Depressing stuff.

This is heartbreaking. My whole family was born, and most raised, in Detroit. (We moved to Southern California for good in 1962, when I was six.)

All my life I heard stories about Detroit when - believe it or not - it was a once-great city of fine auto plants, beautiful Belle Isle, a vibrant Downtown, and, of course, the Hudson's Christmas parade. When my father was dying of cancer, he wanted to go back for "one last look." When he returned, he was so depressed that all he would say was "I wish I'd never gone back. It was better to remember it the way it was."

That was in 1980.
Au revoir, Detroit.

This is a job for a Giuliani-type politician.

The first step for Detroit is obviously addressing crime. Copy what NYC did in the 90s with the broken window theory. All city police officers should be put on administrative leave temporarily and an outside force should be assembled to tackle crime in the short run. The police officers placed on leave would have to go through re-training and background checks to weed out the corrupt or don't-give-a-damn officers.

Next Detroit needs to get rid of its city income & property taxes, and replace them with a .05% sales tax and a land-value tax. This will spur investment into those old abandoned buildings and put people to work. The half-percent sales tax would generate needed revenue to upgrade basic city services.

Once the crime is addressed, people will start visiting again, and the magic of the free market will accelerate growth. Detroit probably won't be where it used to be but it won't be the Snake Plissken-like environment that it is now.

The riots continue to be justified by calling it a rebellion.

Until there is an apology from the rioters, not more excuses, there can not be healing.

The lesson from the riots can be seen in downtown Detroit, in the Fist of Joe Lewis. It may be said it is just a memorial to a boxer, but everyone knows what it really means.

Debbie has summed it up flawlessly.

The dirty secret is “racism” in Detroit is Black on White.

Survival instinct is what drove other race components out (whites included) and keeps them out.

Go Tigers!

I work at a parish right inside the city's urban neighborhood. I could get a Job anywhere else, but he city is a dump. Every day at work I hear gunfire coming from somewhere in the local neighborhood. My Church has been shot at several times, and the things that get stolen from there regularly, would blow your mind away. It's not a safe town, it is a third world town in a state of war. Given the sanctuary that the enclosed grounds of my Church provide, it is the police who use the parking lot to regularly "suit up" in assault equipment, so as not to alert gangs that they are coming. 2 hours later our lot is filled with cars.

If you report a break in, you won't get any response from the local police who are understaffed, underpaid and overworked. I have had beggars come up to me and literally ask for cash to go get high, no story of being stranded, or a pledge to turn ones life around. But an honest ask for a birthday high (the man in question claimed it was his birthday and wanted money because his friend would hook him up).

If you want to go to a city that looks like a Hurricane swept through it, its Detroit.

It’s not just Detroit dying.

On my road in rural Michigan, there are only two households working, myself included. The remainder are on SS, retired, or on welfare SS disability. Two houses are vacant and two are for sale.

On the parallel road, three households are on welfare, three are on SS or retired and two houses are vacant and up for sale.

The largest Michigan export are graduates leaving the state looking for better opportunities. Michigan is #1 in United moving vans leaving. It’s also the only state to post a negative economic growth last year, with the exception of LA, whose economic bad luck was hurricane-induced.

Michigan has the highest unemployment in the nation. Some rural counties had 20% or better unemployment this past winter. I’m predicting 40% this winter.

You can buy a nice three bedroom, two bath home in many Michigan locales for the price of a new car.

We also have a communist governor who is doing to the state what the black socialists are doing to Detroit. If you want to see what America would look like under the female communist Hillary, Michigan is that picture.

One urban renewal solution : bulldoze it flat, start over. Every razed, empty building means another chunk of parkland reclaimed. If taxes aren’t paid on it, it’s GONE. Use it or lose it. Simple solution, who has the cahones to DO IT?

One of the things that crippled Detroit was that the public employees unions robbed the city blind in the 1970s. It’s fair to blame alot of it on who the government was at the time, but you have to blame alot of it on public employee’s unions. That’s why most city governments fell on bad times in the last few decades, no ability to expand a tax base and increasing demand from public employees unions.

Black Panthers and their radical allies, supported by a thousands of Black Detroiters, rioted for days, starting fires and destroying the city. They wanted more power in the city. They wanted a Black Mayor, a Black police chief, a Black city council...

"So, how's that working out for ya?"

Same with Camden in the People’s Republic of Joisey. When I lived down that way, people told me it was a great city before the riots destroyed it. Seems nothing short of pushing it into the Delaware and starting over from scratch will fix things.

Black Americans, like White Americans, don't want to live in the crime, failed schools, and other living conditions brought to you by the Detroit riots.

No, not "the Detroit riots." Entitlement. "Tolerance." A bleeding heart for people who left the city with a bleeding head.

Crime under Detroit's Black police chiefs (the city has had several) is at an all-time high, and Detroit Public Schools, under its Black superintendents and school boards (there have been several of those, too), are at their worst, with record high drop-out rates and numbers of illiterate graduates.

Great legacy of Black empowerment. Those race-baiters who accuse Whites of paranoia need to look at this track record, and admit that many White fears are justified.

When Black radicals started the riots, they achieved their goal of driving out White Detroiters, but their separatism only isolated them.

What did they THINK was going to happen? White suburbanites were going to flock into the city to become mugging fodder???

Unlike every other inner city in America, Detroit is not a tourist destination.

That may be the understatement of the year. Compared to Detroit, Folsom Prison is Disney World.
