MCMINNVILLE, Ore., July 22 (UPI) -- Two 13-year-old Oregon boys are facing serious sex charges for allegedly slapping female classmates' bottoms as a form of horseplay.
Police arrested Cory Mashburn and Ryan Cornelison of McMinnville and if convicted could be permanently marked as sex offenders, The Portland Oregonian said Sunday. The teens also could spend as long as 10 years in juvenile detention if found guilty.
While the boys' parents have opposed such a harsh penalty, McMinnville District Aattorney Bradley Berry said such youthful acts could have longstanding consequences for the alleged victims.
"These cases are devastating to children," he said. "They are life-altering cases."
Interviews with the boys' fellow students found other teens were engaging in similar behavior at the time and two of the female victims have since recanted their statements.
The Oregonian said the boys are due in court on Aug. 20 to answer to all charges stemming from the February event.
Arrested? These cops ought to be arrested, have their badges pulled forever, and their assets seized by the state. This an outrage.
Sex is sold in magazines, newspapers, tv shows, movies, billboards, bus stations, taxi cabs and any other spot some marketing company considers "Ad space". Then we tell kids "but if you do anything, your a sex offender for the rest of your life"
And we wonder why they are messed up. Is it POSSIBLE to send a more mixed message?
Hi Kids! Every ad you have been innundated with from birth is SEXUAL....but don't actually think about SEX! And If you do, don't act on it or you run the risk of being branded a criminal for life!

It’s all about context, and in this case, their is no real context. It’s not as if it is something that unusual, and given that current youth culture teaches women that they are sexual objects, you know, I don’t see the point. You know, if these kids had been seen drinking robitussin all day, nothing would have happened to them.

It’s time to get a new shrink. Sounds like he has some loans to payoff. My Daughter went thru one incident like this when she was four. My F-ing Mother in law had taken her to Mexico to aplace they had on the beach. I assumed and believed her when she told me it was just her and her female friend going.
I received a call from my Mother hysterical telling me to come home from work immediately. When I found out that her friends older male friend went and they wanted to go to a bar, he offered to babysit.
I did all I could to keep it together and took her to the hospital. I told my husband to keep his mouth shut, it wasn’t going to take much for me to really hurt someone.
She was examined and to this day I remember the look on the ER Doctors face when he came to talk to me. When my husband heard the results, he turned and went to the pay phone. The Dr asked where he was going, and I said to call his B Mother. The Dr. asked me what I was going to do. I said first I’m divorcing him, and then I am going to make his Mothers life a living hell.
I made it clear that no one but me would talk to her about it. She began to act out around 14. I pulled my copy of the report out of my files, getting ready for the inevitable.
We did have the confrontation. It was awful, but I don’t regret handling like I did. She went thru one suicide attempt, and got some really good help. She is now the Mother of twin boys, happily married and a fine young women.
This can not be left to some one else to handle. I guarded my Daughter like a hawk. Had a nice big German Shepard. None of my kids ever stayed with anyone but my Mother and Me. Yet still if I hadn’t been looking for the outburst I might have reacted differently.
It would never occur to me to trust anyone else to solve the whole problem. I don’t know what kind of shrink she is going to but he obviously is not helping with the problem. His duty is to protect his patient as she deals with this. I will pray for her, because this has reached a point that if she doesn’t have a very strong advocate on her part...well you know.

So what are they going to do about football games now, where the boys slap each others butts all the time?
Good Lord. This is ridiculous. I see kids doing this sort of thing all the time and if the girls really minded, they’d take care of it themselves. If not at the moment, later. I’ve seen that, too.
What now? Establish 6 inch rules like REALLY conservative Christian schools do that they are mocked for?
I sure hope that those (prosecutorial misconduct) charges are the only ones that "stick" in this case...

Nope, but we don't think a freaking 13 year old kid should be classified for life the same as a brutal violent rapist, i.e., a sex offender. Gee, somehow you missed that? Wow.
Punishment deserved, as in a good paddling, suspension, etc. But not wrecking their lives.

I’m serious. Slapping a female on the butt is BAD and shouldn’t be done. To even smirk that it is okay, yuk-yuk, just boys being boys.....well this is why conservatives get a bad name. The Nags at the women’s lib get away with their stifling rules and political correctness because those who are supposed to love and cherish the females in their care act like slapping them in the butt at will is just a fine and dandy thing.

Now....I do NOT think that any young boy should get any sort of punishment for slapping a girl’s butt besides telling them to stop. I’m not in favor of locking males up for this sort of thing unless they don’t stop when asked.

As for the sexualization of our culture, hey, it’s been said before and I’ll say it again.....just because a young female is stupid enough to dress inappropriately is not license for a feel-up/rape free for all. No more than the fool who walks down a dark alley at night with a full wallet. They may be inviting an attack but it doesn’t give the robber a get-out-of-jail free time.
Yes I think the punishment referred to in this article is ridiculous. I need to know more. Did the girls allow the slapping on the butt? This is perfectly okay too before the male neanderthals call me frigid. There’s nothing wrong with a woman ALLOWING a man to slap her butt. But an uninvited slap? NOT okay.
If the girls did NOT allow the butt slaps, did the boys stop when asked? Were they even asked in a manner that they knew the butt slap was not welcome? Women are notoriously reluctant to make a scene.
If the girls asked them to stop did the boys immediately do so?
But to sit and yell hee-haw that butt-slapping a female without an invite is A-0kay.....

You mean like the affair he had while I was pregnant with her. I was pregnant (early) with my last child when all of this came down. I waited until the baby was born, and 6 weeks later I went back to work and filed for divorce. he was stupid enough to think I had mellowed on the issue. And refused to leave until I hit him with a tea kettle. ( and he heard my brother was on his way from SF).
Dumb kids. They will have to learn to respect women the hard way. They should have been taught at home.
I’m with you. It’s insane to prosecute these boys, but they definitely need to be taught to keep their hands to themselves. My son and I both stand ready to vigoriously defend my daughter from any unwanted touching (and probably from some wanted touching, perish the thought).
Don’t know where you spent your childhood, but this kind of behavior was forbidden in our Jewish/Catholic neighborhood.
Respect for the fair sex should start young.
Boys should be instructed in the home how to behave around girls.
