‘24’ Star Sutherland: ‘Global Warming Is A Crime For Which We Are All Guilty!’

‘24’ Star Sutherland: ‘Global Warming Is A Crime For Which We Are All Guilty!’ By Noel Sheppard | July 21, 2007 - 17:36 ET

Remember all that media chatter in January about the hit TV series "24" being conservative?

Well, the producers have announced the following (emphasis added, h/t NBer amber):

"24," the Emmy Award-winning series from Imagine and Twentieth Century Fox Television, will strive to become the first television production ever to save enough energy and reduce enough carbon emissions over the course of a season to render its entire season finale "carbon neutral."

Star Kiefer Sutherland has already filmed a public service annoucement which begins: "Global warming is a crime for which we are all guilty!"

Think that will put to rest all the "24" is conservative nonsense? No, I don't either. Regardless, here's their plan:

Introducing the use of biodiesel fuels to power generators and production vehicles;

Previously, the show powered its electric generators and large transportation vehicles with diesel fuel. This season, the show intends to use a combination of petroleum diesel and biodiesel (a clean-burning alternative fuel produced from renewable resources), which should result in emission reductions ranging from 5% on the vehicles to as much as 100% on the generators.

Running all on-stage production activities on "green power";

Through the L.A. Department of Water and Power, the show will purchase all of its energy from renewable power sources (such as wind, water and solar). As a result, this "green energy" will be brought into the Los Angeles power grid from outlying areas, thereby reducing overall emissions and pollution in greater Los Angeles.

Rewiring an entire stage to use electric, rather than diesel-generated, power;

Previously, one of the two stages housing "24"' had insufficient power capacity necessary to light the sets and run the equipment, necessitating the use of supplemental diesel-gas-fueled generators. Twentieth Century Fox Television is investing in rewiring this building, which it leases, so that no diesel generators will be needed this season.

Integrating fuel-saving and low-emission hybrid vehicles into the production fleet;

This season, the show intends to incorporate as many lower-emission vehicles as possible into departments that require considerable road trave,l such as Locations, Transportation and Production Assistance.

Creating a series of PSAs about the issue starring Kiefer Sutherland and key cast members;

Kiefer Sutherland has already shot a public service announcement describing "24"'s commitment to this issue. This season, the series intends to participate in a series of PSAs educating viewers about climate change and offering information about how they can be part of the solution.

When appropriate, incorporating the issue of global warming and the importance of carbon emission reduction into storylines;

Posting information, resources and do-it-yourself techniques for viewers to reduce their own carbon footprints on the "24" page at Fox.com;

Accruing enough carbon reduction savings through these and other innovations to render production of the entire final episode officially "carbon neutral."

Carbon neutrality refers to a product having a balance of zero between the amount of carbon absorbed and the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere during the production of the product. Carbon neutrality is achieved through energy reduction, green power use, and purchasing "offsets" which represent investment in alternative energy and carbon reduction.

Great. Now one of my favorite shows has become part of Al Gore's scam.

And I was having such a great Saturday.

I’m guessing he won’t bring it up.

I'll give him until Wednesday.

Why haven’t you listened to him for a year?

He's as deluded as most everyone else that champions voting for the lesser of evils. And of course each voter thinks their candidate is the lesser evil.

Voting for the lesser of evils always begets evil. The ends don't justify the means. (Those two sentences can't be honestly reconciled.) The ends justify the means only when the ends are intended to be evil. But somehow I don't think voters really intend an evil end to come from their vote. They just don't know any better.

Something to the effect of, doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result is a sign of insanity. I call it voters' collective delusion.

That said, I think Rush does a great service to opening peoples eyes. Comparatively their eyes are narrow from my perspective. I understand that he must achieve certain numbers in order to justify to the corporation that it's worth paying him over a hundred million dollars.

In other words, I think Rush understands more than he is letting on. But if he did let the listeners in further he would turn many away.  Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic.

I've said umpteen times that politics is not the solution. Rather, politics is the problem. When the house of cards finally crumbles Rush won't be there trying to hold it up. He'll be detailing the collapse.

I do have a funny story he told on TV.

His stepdaughter, Michelle, was getting ready to go on her first date. Kiefer had gotten a bunch of his buddies together and they all sat there cleaning their guns while the kid waited for Michelle. He said she was home on time. :)

I don't see anything wrong with their ideas. It certainly isn't hurting anyone. LA could use less pollution that's for sure, as could a lot of other places.

I plead guilty to TWI. (*hic*)

Took my laptop Charlene out to dinner, and was on my third (final) glass of wine when I typed that.

Just read the lines that some intelligent person writes for you, Kieffer.

Don’t spoil your image by making people think you’re no smarter than say, Alec Baldwin.

"Oh for God's sake. the one Hollywierd actor I had a little hope for as being "normal"..."

You and me both.

"How disappointing. I can't watch that show now knowing this."

Since they did away with President David Palmer, the show has been headed downhill and may have jumped the shark. Last season's new president was weak and unconvincing. Losing Tony and Edgar didn't help either. Now, we hear this global warming nonsense from "Jack Bauer" along with the news that the producers have decided to install a female president (psyops prep for Hillary?); evidently, they plan to turn it into another West Wing. Those producers could teach a class in how to destroy a good show. We'll probably tune in for the first one or two hours, but I doubt we'll hang around longer.

As you say, what a disappointment.

This hardly rises to that level. And as WestCoastGal pointed out in post 105, LA smog is horrendous.

The most pervasive green house gas (95%) in the atmosphere of Planet Earth is water vapor. This is not surprising on a planet whose surface is 66% water. These oceans are as much a six miles deep. Carbon dioxide is 3% of the total green house gas.

Keifer can donate millions to the carbon neutral company that Al Gore is CEO of.

This global warming is a “BIG GOVERNMENT” ruse.

George Orwell would be impressed with their tactics.

Come on people, he’s an ACTOR. You can’t honestly expect him to be capable of advanced reasoning. He’s little better than a trained parrot for other peoples ideas and opinions.

Of course he’s going to believe in man made Global Warming, it takes a fair bit of thinking to reject the propaganda bombarding us daily, few ACTORS out there have shown they possess the ability.

There maybe the rare brain in Hollywood, but they are few and far between.

No such thing. At best, Dennis Miller is what was once called a Scoop Jackson Democrat. Sorta like Truman and JFK. By conservative standards, Miller remains a liberal by choice. He supports increased income taxes to fund the welfare state, abortion on demand and gay rights. No thanks.

He’ll probably say the same I am, there are so few shows on TV he’ll keep watching unless the show jumps the shark. Last year sucked so I don’t know if it has.
