Al Gore's son was charged with felony drug-possession charges and lesser offenses related to his July 4 speeding stop, authorities said Friday. And a law enforcement source tells PEOPLE that Gore had 140 Vicodin pills and "dozens" of other prescription drugs.
If convicted on all charges, Albert Gore III faces up to three years and eight months in prison. But state law makes him eligible for a drug diversion program instead of incarceration, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
His arraignment is set for Aug. 1 in Laguna Niguel, Calif.
Gore, 24, was pulled over south of Los Angeles in a blue Toyota Prius around 2:15 a.m. July 4 for allegedly driving more than 100 mph.
Police previously said officers, who had searched the car because they detected the smell of marijuana, found prescription drugs including Xanax, Valium, Soma, Vicodin and Adderall, as well as a small amount of marijuana. No prescriptions were present, police said.
The amount of medication wasn't revealed at the time, but the source tells PEOPLE that Gore was carrying 140 pills of Vicodin alone, along with "dozens" of the other medications.
Gore was arrested and taken to the Orange County Jail's Intake and Release Center in Santa Ana, where his older sister Sarah bailed him out with $20,000 cash. His father later said that he was "getting treatment."
In all, he was charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of marijuana, and a speeding infraction, the DA says.
The former vice president's son has a history of encounters with the law.
In August 2000, he was ticketed for going 97 mph in a 55-mph zone in North Carolina, and had his driving privileges suspended.
Two years later, he was cited for DUI in Virginia. He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year's probation.
And in December 2003, Gore was arrested for marijuana possession in Maryland after he was pulled over for driving with his headlights off. He was sentenced to drug counseling in that case.
A Gore family spokeswoman had no comment.
Vicodin - Very common pain medication.
Valium - Common tranquilizer.
Not so sure about the others.
oh... i'm sorry, for a second i believed the press in America was unbiased and reported the truth. what was i thinking...
That is called "distribution" and is a felony.
> Dont wish to sound naive, but... what are these things? Anyone?
Brand names for various painkillers, antidepressants, mood changers, psychoactive stuff. Brain chemicals. Mind-altering drugs.
Wikipedia is your friend (they're in there), likewise Google (or whatever).
Good going, All and Tupper Bore!
All - Pease run again and for 2008. It should be good fun to see you up there again.
Please take your M-1, too.
Contrast the media coverage this is getting with that given to Jeb Bush’s daughter.
Contrast the criminal penalties also...they put her in jail I believe.
Soma , I think is a powerful sleeping pill ??? Not really sure ....
Vicodin is a pain pill , which is highly addictive , & gives energy for people in severe pain.
Adderall I think is an antidepressant drug , or is used for ADHD disorder ( the Hyper Kid Drug ) & Similar to Ritalin ????
You gotta wonder what else Altoast2000 had in that medicine cabinet - eh?
I took codeine for two months last summer after I tore up my knee.
I stopped cold turkey and felt very irritated/depressed. I realized those were withdrawal symptoms, and instead weaned myself off the pills by taking fewer and fewer each day for about 7-10 days.
Um, you don't get it, huh? The law don't care if you get money for sharing, that is "distributing" and it is a felony. Get it? If you like to smoke a little, so you keep more than an ounce on hand, and say, a friend stops by and you "share" some with a beer, you have "distributed". That is a felony. If, God help us, you have a deer rifle in your house when you commit this heinous act, OH MY GOD! You fall under the NRAs Project Exile, mandatory 10 yrs in the fed hotel. Party stash?
Well, OK. But that doesn't spare many folks.
What kind of scum write laws like that?
Folks "We the People" send to Congress. Or at least that is how DEA and ATF and a willing prosecuter can read the statutes. How much money do you have for lawyers? They have full time staffs.
Whoever they are, there is a special place in hell waiting for them.
Cool. There is a special place right here on earth waiting for you if come under their radar.
I wonder what Rush will say on Monday?
(I’m sorry, but it’s past my bedtime and being banned will actually do me good.)
Albert Gore III, Drug Pusher
I didn’t know you could get a Prius to go over 100 MPH. What’s the “carbon footprint” on that?
If you’re carrying a large amount of drugs, it’s always a good idea to drive like a maniac so as not to attract the attention of the Police.
Why aren’t rich, drunk, drug addicted celebrities smart enough to hire a limo, a chauffeur or take a cab?
“But state law makes him eligible for a drug diversion program instead of incarceration, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.”
Interesting... I guess previous drug offences in other states don’t count...
I think Vicodin is just above ibuprofen on effective pain pill,....wife was fighting bone cancer and it did very little,...had to use Lorcet and then oxycontin, which didn't really do that much,...then we moved on to more effective stuff....
Showing up at the jail with a sack of cash is a criminal m.o. In California a property bond can be posted.
She also showed up in some gas guzzling super car....anyone know the details...?
Pictures of two DUmmycrat losers.
