(CBS) JERSEY CITY A Jersey City woman made a shocking discovery on her lawn this morning when she noticed a military rocket launcher lying in the grass.
Niranjana Besai was leaving her house at 88 Nelson Street, to go to work at just after 8 a.m. when she saw the launcher on her front lawn. She immediately called police.
Besai's neighbor, Joe Quinn saw her pointing at the equipment from her front porch. When he walked over to the six-foot-long weapon, he was just as shocked. It looked like a bazooka, he told CBS 2 News.
Quinn tells CBS 2 HD he originally thought the launcher was just a pipe, but after noticing it had a picture of a soldier on it, he realized it looked similar to a missile launcher he'd seen on television.
Jersey City Police removed the launcher, and the incident is now being investigated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force and The Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Jersey City Police could not confirm whether it was actually operable.
But, sources tell CBS 2s Scott Weinberger that its the kind of missile that can take down an aircraft and the area where the launcher was discovered is in or very near a flight path for Newark Liberty International Airport.

In a straight line how far is that. The map didn’t load right. It appeared to be about 9 miles?
Not an airplane killer?
I think antitank rounds don’t have the altitude of a stinger or redeye. Heavier charge and designed for ground use. You coud get a low airplane or a chopper but an AT round is not the same as an AA round.
Not at 6' long it's not.
There is no explosives in a launcher so it can’t be inert. There was no mention of any rockets being found. Now was it operational and did the owner have the rockets for it? That remains to be seen. As far as being operational, I’ve seen some launchers in pretty nasty condition after being buried for along time, that with a little mercy and maybe a few spare parts could of been put right back into action.
It is decidedly not an anti-aircraft weapon.
I wonder if the "Federal officials" realize an anti-tank launcher/weapon, with an unguided projectile can be used against low flying aircraft, such as aircraft on approach or departure?
Even the Somali's were using them against aircraft, if I'm not mistaken.
Ok so far . . .
Investigators believe it was used in a military training exercise (the weapon had been fired) and that some soldier or guardsman probably took it as a souvenir then chucked it or lost it.
Is it possible that someone used it to take a pot shop at a passenger jet and missed? Abandoning the spent tube prevents being caught with the evidence when leaving the area.
Anyone know when the show is scheduled for?
Yeah, but why would a bad guy try to shoot down an airliner at 25,000 feet, when they could go over to the nearest airport, and watch airliners fly 500 feet directly over head?
Please understand, aircraft come in so low on approach, and take off, that they have to put up all kinds of restrictions for radio antennas/towers, they have to put lights on roofs of building etc. So low, if the pilot wanted to wave at you, you could clearly see him.
Sorry; we got rid of it after the one on Flight 800 blew up; can’t take any chances.
We’uns jist run a pipe down to the crick, now...
(I finally got fed up with a persistent [pre-nocall list] “septic enzymes” telemarketer, and told him that. They quit calling us every week after that. We held our breath waiting for the authorities to show, but they never did.) LOL
A shoulder fired SAM launcher - no well dressed man should be without one!

Jersey City has the highest concentration of Muslims in the Northeast United States. But I’m sure that’s just a coincidence. FBI will assure us shortly that this was just misplaced by a senile veteran or something. MOVE ALONG.
Watch it!!!
You could put your eye out with that !!!
Just chiming in,but it may not have been intended to shoot down an aircraft.Aren’t there harbors nearby? Also, what if it was just “dropped” to avoid detection?I find it highly unlikely that someone just goes walking through a neighborhood carrying a shoulder fire launcher and just loses it.Possibly thrown out of a moving vehicle making its way back to the turnpike?
We have some spontaneously combusting center fuel tank buffs, too.
bttt
Now in this particular location, it appeared to be several miles out. However there are many airports where aircraft even at several miles out are very low. I would guess around 1500 feet or so. That's nothing, and very low my friend.
For example, on Sepulveda Blvd at LAX approach, they are so low...Well it's almost scary.
a stinger has nowhere near 25000 feet- more like 10000 tops. Redeye less than that, and both are considered AA rounds.
AT4 has a range of about 1500 feet linear and much less vetical. Still not a toy but not that effective on aircraft unless you are directly on path and underneath when the plane is less than a few hundred feet high. While it may be effective in these limited cases the military does not consider the at4 to be an antiaircraft round, it’s considered antitank.
I just googled it. It took place May 26th, 27th. I had no idea they had one there. We go to the one at Atlantic City every August. It’s awesome.
I did find these pretty impressive pictures.

I thought Indian names usually had animal names in them, such as Running Bear, Little Eagle, or Busy Beaver.
