NASHVILLE, July 19 -- President Bush said Thursday that he had considered unilaterally sending U.S. troops to Darfur to stop the mass slaughter in that Sudanese region but decided against it in favor of a multinational response that he conceded has been "slow" and "tedious."
(snip)
The audience was friendly and gave Bush a standing ovation for his position on the Iraq war. But several questioners, unhappy that more has not been done to tighten the borders, pressed him on immigration. Bush defended his plan, which died in the Senate, to grant legal status to illegal immigrants already in the United States and predicted employers could soon face a labor shortage.
Bush rejected a plea to pardon two Border Patrol officers imprisoned after shooting a drug smuggler, a cause celebre among many angry about illegal immigration.
"No, I won't make you that promise," Bush told a woman who raised the case. He called the prosecutor "a dear friend of mine from Texas" and defended the verdict. "I know this is an emotional issue. But people need to look at the facts."

Johnny Sutton is a Bush Buddy.
And that explains the thing completely.
President Bush said Thursday that he had considered unilaterally sending U.S. troops to Darfur to stop the mass slaughter in that Sudanese region but decided against it in favor ofa multinational response that he conceded has been "slow" and "tedious.doing nothing, just like with our Southern Border."
There fixed it.
What is our national interest?
No blood for popularity poll ratings.
Darfur is a perfect examp;e of a more nuanced response made in agreement through the UN and our allies in Europe and Africa.
Makes you think he isn’t worried about “embarassing” Johnny Sutton, rather that Sutton’s overzealous response was the Bush Administration’s supported response.
John Cornyn (R) (also a friend of Bush and Sutton) throttled back his venom when he finally got the hearings he requested.
NOW that the hearings are over, Republicans like Sutton and Cornyn are going on record with backpeddle statements.
Sutton was responsible for the charges these men got. Sutton was responsible for the supression of details like drug running and the get out of jail free visa.
And what about the people who lied to Congress about details like “I’m gonna shoot some Mexicans today”?
Did you listen to the testimony Sutton gave before Feinswine and Cornyn, who read from court transcripts? It was on CSpan again this morning.
Compean and Ramos were mischarged [I bet agents aren’t charged like that again], but
1) they were dirty BP agents [failing to report the incident, destroying evidence]
2)—and they asked their co-workers to compromise themselves and jeopardize their careers to help destroy evidence. That’s wrong.
It’s good that they’re out of law enforcement.
Forcing them to increase wages. Oh, the horror! Maybe a few companies will even have to kick in for some medical insurance or pay overtime. What a hideous indignity they must live through. I am a lifelong Republican. I also work for a paycheck. Does Bush know who he represents?
Unless we are going to KILL radical muzzies in darfur... screw darfur.
LLS
I take it you didn’t agree with the Republican senator on the panel who said it should be legal to shoot drug dealers at the border who are running away. I watched the whole two hours and I personally thought Diane Feinstein had Johnny Sutton pissing in his pants. Sutton was pathetic. To you Clara Lou, why don’t you go down there and do two weeks at night on the border defending this country from these drug dealers. George Bush cut Sandy Berger a break why not our two Border Patrol agents?
Nod. I'm starting to take stuff seriously that I thought was a bit off kilter before Bush II.
But this doesn't explain why Bush would knowingly alienate a large percentage of the base.
We need to keep digging into this case. We might find impeachment material.
Yeah, why would he do something that would mean he wouldn’t get re-elected?
Bush is Buddy driven, man. It explains a lot of otherwise unexplainable actions.
would be a good time to kick out Chinese oil interests in the area also
I think that Bush should commute their sentences because they were stupidly charged.
Would I ask co-workers to cover my doings — no.
Do I expect peace officers to follow the law — yes. But I expect laws to be reasonable and stem from common sense. And law is black and white, but in real life there is a lot of gray area out in the world. That’s why we have human police officers in the field not robots. I think ten to eleven years in jail is excessive for trying to get rid of empty shell casings because as I followed the hearings there was no other crime committed by these officers and I am giving them the benefit of the doubt since they are on our team and I am not going to give any breaks to the drug dealers or take their word in this matter which is what Johnny Sutton did. These two border officers are in the position they are in because of an overzealous team of civilian prosecutors who fail to remember that these are the people who are on the front line at night trying to make this a safe place for those prosecutors to sleep. I guess, in short, if there’s going to be a break cut to anybody it’s going to be to the guys on our side not the other side.
What is this lie that R & C told that the other border agent contradicted? What are the other ways in which they lied “in more ways than one”?
So, you didn’t watch the hearings between Sutton, Feinswine, Cornyn, et al.?
Lie #1) Campean (SP?) testified that about a struggle between him and the Andrade-criminal. According to a BA witness (not Ramos) the struggle C described never happened. C did not fall into the 11-ft. ditch due to a struggle with the creep-drug-smuggler.
Lie #2) After Andrade (the drug smuggler) disappeared, R&C picked up all of the shell casings from their guns that they could find and threw them in the river.
Lie #3) Some time later, they asked some co-worker(s) to go and pick up and shell casings they missed and to discard them.
Lie #4) R&C never filled out a report about what happened, as they were required to do per regulations. (Why?)
