Nuclear Secrets Allegedly Stolen From Tenn. Lab First On WNBC.com

POSTED: 10:12 am EDT July 19, 2007 UPDATED: 10:50 am EDT July 19, 2007 NEW YORK -- WNBC.com's Jonathan Dienst has learned a contract worker is accused of stealing nuclear secrets from the Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee.

Investigators said the worker wanted to sell the secrets to a "foreign country."

Investigators are calling the theft a serious breach of security at one of the country's most important nuclear research labs. Officials said there was serious concern the documents could have fallen into the hands of enemy states or even terrorist organizations.

NewsChannel4 has learned that among the materials allegedly stolen was classified information about the uranium enrichment process. Officials familiar with the case said the suspect will face charges including violations of the Atomic Energy Act.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, worked as an escort at the facility. Officials said his contracting job was to escort visitors to and from offices at the lab.

Sources said it is unclear how a low-level contract worker was able to obtain some of the nation's highly guarded nuclear documents.

What makes you think that it was some dufus back water red neck? When they don’t give the name, I always assume that there is a reason that the name is being withheld. The guy was probably a member of the Religion of Peace.

Gee, after Los Alamos and the entire Wen Ho Lee fiasco, you would think the government would have taken major steps to assure something like that wouldn't happen again.

It's incredible just how lethargic our bureaucracy is.

Yes, the Rosenburgs; but that was in a time when America was fueled by testosterone. Today's feminized America is fueled by estrogen.

I cautiously believe he/she may of not acted alone. An escort is low on the need-to-know ladder. Someone with the access to sensitive programs would have provide the actual goodies. The Escort is most likely a gopher or a friggin' fool with a security clearance. I haven't figured it out yet.

As a card-carrying member of the Estrogen contingent, I agree with you entirely. If we would execute some of these pukes, it might cut back on the spying.

Did you know, Duncan Hunter is the one that introduced and got passed the “NUCLEAR SECRETS SAFETY ACT” http://ftp.fas.org/sgp/news/2000/06/hunter.html ?

This legislation was vital because, since 1996, there had been a transfer of missile technology to China, inadequate tracking of supercomputers, a discovery of a Communist spy in our national laboratory, a failure to remove the spy for 17 months, and missing computer data containing nuclear secrets http://www.lanl.gov/orgs/pa/News/062100Testimony.html .

Duncan Hunter took on the administration http://www.house.gov/hunter/news_prior_2006/nuclearsecrets.html . He took the investigation seriously and ensured it was corrected.
