Afghan rebel leader says ends insurgency -statement

KABUL, July 19 (Reuters) - A wanted rebel leader in Afghanistan, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, has declared a ceasefire against the government, a statement signed by Hekmatyar said.

The statement, aired by a private television and circulated in Kabul, said:

"Members of Hezb-i-Islami have stopped and refrained from brother killing and from the destruction of the country and assumed political activity," the statement said.

Minor point about the Hek. He’s bonkers. I wouldn’t trust a word out of his mouth. He won’t stop agitating and fighting until he’s dead. There is no happy retirement for guys like him. He’ll live by the sword until he dies by it. He’s just taking a little hunda (temporary truce), if this report is true in the first place.
