Poland wants missile base to strengthen ties with United States, boost position within NATO
12:50 18.07.2007
Poland expects the projected U.S. ballistic missile defense base in the northern part of the country to tighten its relationship with the United States and strengthen its position within NATO and Central Europe, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Pawel Kowal said Wednesday.
"What we gain is obvious [...] our relations with the United States will be exceptional, we will have also additional security guarantees," said Kowal in a morning interview with Radio TOK FM. "It should be emphasized that the shield on Polish territory will additionally strengthen our relations within NATO, with which Poland is closely connected, and the position of Poland in this part of Europe."
Poland is negotiating the deployment of 10 U.S. missile interceptors on its soil. Polish President Lech Kaczynski said Monday that the country essentially agreed to host the missile base.
"The shield issue is settled now," Kaczynski said, following a meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush in the White House.
Negotiations between two countries are expected to end in the autumn.
Makes sense.
Helps keep Russia out of their way somewhat I would think.
And in related news:
Reuters German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday she does not oppose U.S. plans for an anti-missile shield to counter any future attack by Iran, a project that has strained ties between Russia and the West.
“I am not against Mr Putin but also not against the idea,” Merkel said at a semi-annual news conference in response to a question about the U.S. shield plan. “I have always said that one cannot say there’s no threat coming from Iran.”
While her Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung has explicitly backed the U.S. plan, Merkel has been cautious when speaking about it and had not previously linked the shield to what the West perceives as the future threat of a nuclear-armed Iran.

I would have no objections. They have been a steady ally in the GWOT (mad mooslimbs).
Poland is on the move and will become a major European power, as they should be.
Next time Russia tries to march through they’re going to get a 2 x 4 upside the haid.
I should say that I like the idea with that 2x4...
