The FBI is investigating an alleged human smuggling operation based in Chaparral, N.M., that agents say is bringing "Iraqis and other Middle Eastern" individuals across the Rio Grande from Mexico.
An FBI intelligence report distributed by the Washington, D.C. Joint Terrorism Task Force, obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com, says the illegal ring has been bringing Iraqis across the border illegally for more than a year.
Border Patrol officials in the area said they were unaware of the specifics of the FBI's report, and federal prosecutors in New Mexico told ABCNews.com they had no current cases involving the illegal smuggling of Iraqis.
The FBI report, issued last week, says the smuggling organization "used to smuggle Mexicans, but decided to smuggle Iraqi or other Middle Eastern individuals because it was more lucrative." Each individual would be charged a fee of $20,000 to $25,000, according to the report.
The people to be smuggled would "gather at a house on the Mexican side of the border" and then cross the Rio Grande into the U.S., the report says.

You know, there are more than a few formerly level-headed conservatives who now embrace the belief that the Bush administration had a hand in the World Trade Center holocaust. I don’t hold to that belief, but I will hold George Bush, and his successor (should that successor prove to be as impotent as his predecessor), personally responsible for the next terrorist attack on American soil.
In a speech delivered in a joint news conference with Jacques Chirac in late 2001, Bush emphatically stated, ‘You're either with us or against us in the fight against terror.’
I am no longer ‘with’ the president in his ‘fight against terror’ because his ‘fight’ involves too much turning a blind eye, too much politically correct pandering, and too much placing business and economic interest before our republic’s safety and sovereignty. So, Mr. President, you may place this particular citizen in the ‘against’ column.
It isn’t a question of if, but of when, the next terrorist attack on America will occur. And, even though he will not have pushed the button, or released the toxins, or flown the planes, this president will have been an accomplice in the holocaust.
He has consistently provided safe passage for the terrorists by maintaining a 2,000+ mile-wide open door into this country for them. He has consistently agreed to punish those Americans who have taken it upon themselves to put a stop to the incursions across our borders. And he has refused to keep his word to at least begin the construction of seven hundred miles of barrier that would at least serve as an indication that he takes seriously his presidential oath to preserve, protect and defend. That oath rings hollow at a time when its significance should occupy his every waking hour.
A pox on those who now sit in positions of leadership in Washington, who daily declare irrelevant the fact that America’s heritage and culture are under deadly attack, while also allowing the madmen from whom they are supposedly protecting us, via a one-hand-tied-behind-our-backs war in the Middle East, to walk across our southern border unhindered.
Because of the trust that has been placed in them, and because of the courage and sacrifice represented by those who went before, the degree of evil in Washington is, in an historic context, in some ways even more pernicious than that found in any Islamic terrorist mindset.
Sleep well. Your government is watching out for you …
