L.A. Catholic Church Abuse Cases Could Yield Half-Billion Dollar Settlement (announcement Monday)

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles is close to a historic multimillion-dollar settlement that is expected to total at least $500million but could range even higher for hundreds of victims of clergy abuse.

In what would be the largest payout in the church's sexual-abuse scandal, sources close to the archdiocese said Saturday that terms of a settlement were being worked out this weekend.

The news came just two days before the first of more than 500 clergy abuse cases is scheduled for jury selection Monday.

The Associated Press reported Saturday that the archdiocese and its insurers are set to announce a deal Monday that would pay as much as $650million to about 500 plaintiffs - an average of $1.2million to $1.3million per person.

The Associated Press also reported that the settlement calls for the release of confidential priest personnel files after review by a judge assigned to oversee the litigation.

A source close to the archdiocese confirmed to The Daily News that an agreement had been reached but said details and legal language were still being hammered out.

I am still unsure who is paying all these huge awards...
Parishoners?
The Bishop?

Is there even any way to tell if the plaintiffs are all genuine?

All of this crap was due to a dismal failure in leadership from the get go. If I were the Pope I’d fire every bastard that knew about this and tried to cover it up.

Just remember, half of everything you put in the collection plate every week goes to them or lawyers.

I am very pro-catholic church and Pope but even they, have jumped the shark.

They let the gays in during the 70-80 and now get to sow what they reaped.

People say bad things about the inquisition but personally I think if the Dominicans dealt with some of the perpetrators in the traditional manner it might put an end to the sort of behavior that resulted in these lawsuits.

As for who pays, the Jebs have some very valuable real estate. Let the red orders pay.

Yes, I strongly agree, ken21. The reshuffling of the rapists was criminal. But has anybody prosecuted this criminally? If you cover up a crime (particularly of this sort) and then recycle the perps so that they can re-offend, isn’t that in and of itself criminal? Such damage to the good that is done by parochial schools in the inner city or in hospitals or other areas of the church. It is the first thing that comes to mind when one talks about priests. What an awfully stupid decision. But nobody seems to see anything criminal. What am I missing?

Well, the Pope included a statement last year about getting everything handled....

I don’t think anything will happen to Mahoney though...unless he gets recalled back to the Vatican.

Make sure you put your money in the collection plate. Half a billion dollars is going to require a LOT of giving from the laypeople.

Dont forget the lawyers fees. Which will mean about 600 bucks to each plaintiff.

They let the gays in during the 70-80

The largest fraction of Boston abusers, and most of the worst ones, came from the St. John's Seminary class of 1960. This means that most of them began formation in 1953, or before.

The first "retreat" (in more ways than one) center for homosexual child abusing priests was founded by the Boston Archdiocese in the 1940s, in New Mexico.

Without getting into the Spellman rumors, it's clear that the American Church was producing homosexual child molesters, some of them quite sick, at least by the 1940s, if not before.

The major effect of Vatican II was the exodus of tens of thousands of heterosexual clergy and religious, a lot of whom married each other. This reduced the oversight of homosexual priests and religious, and made what was intolerable before tolerable, but a lot if the post-1960s gay priests and religious are just "ordinary" gays - attracted to the religious life by the socially-sanctioned same-sex milieu and by homosexual bishops - but, contrary to what many would like to believe, the monsters, almost all of them, came out of the American Church in the 1940s and 1950s.
