"Fred Thompson's Race To Lose" - Run Fred, Run!!!
MSNBC.com ^ | July 12, 2007 | Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro

An evangelical leader tells CBN’s David Brody, “It’s Fred Thompson’s race to lose.” Here the full quote from Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission: "My assessment is that at this moment in time it is Fred Thompson's race to lose. It may be a convergence of the right man, in the right place and at the right time. I have never seen anything like this grassroots swell for Thompson. I'm not speaking for Southern Baptists but I do believe I have my hand on the pulse of Southern Baptists and I think I know where the consensus is." Brody’s take: “This has got to be a major concern for Mitt Romney…not to mention frustrating ….Romney needs some of those Evangelical heavyweights. Having them in his hip pocket is crucial. It would give him cover on the Mormon issue.”

I have never seen anything like this grassroots swell for Thompson.

I just don't see the appeal either. He was a light-weight in the Senate. And he was a Senator. Senators tend to be talkers (professional bloviators) rather than doers and usually don't get elected to the White House. He chaired the CFR committee and helped write it, and it initially was named the McCain-Feingold-Thompson bill.

It seems the Freddiebots are projecting what they hope Thompson will be rather than what his background shows him to be.

I've listened to some of his speeches, but he seems to talk around the issues.

You guys are right. We should unite around that Paul fella or maybe the chameleon who used to be governor of Masachusetts; some real heavyweights.

Amusing comments from the DUers who frequent MSNBC. I’d say the average IQ level is about 50 or 60.

Anyway, the issue isn’t whether the Mormon candidate needs some heavyweight Baptist endorsements. The issue is how good a candidate Mitt is, how much you can believe what he says, over against his record. I have no problems with a Mormon candidate as such. Over the years, most of the Mormon politicians I’ve seen on the national stage have been pretty conservative. But not all of them. There’s Harry Reid, for instance.

And, I’m sorry to say, Mitt has some real problems on the social issues that he just hasn’t satisfied me about. He just keeps talking platitudes and saying nothing, stuff like all monotheistic religions are the same. No, they are not the same. I don’t believe in the teachings of the LDS. That’s all right, as long as the guy squares with me. Then he’ll believe what he believes and I’ll believe what I believe and we’ll get along. But he doesn’t really square with me on this, or on other bottom line issues like abortion, gay marriage, and amnesty for illegals.

Fred has it in the bag before he announces.

Mitt is a Mormon. His Mormon beliefs will drive his ideology. Fred is a Christian. More people, thank God, relate to a Christian and want THAT ideology to be his driving belief; not Mormonism.

I love the primaries...the warmth and fellowship is so fuzzy.

only thing I know so far is..

I like Tanc

I like Hunter

I like the lucidity of Huckabee....yes...I said that.

I don’t support Romney or Rudi or Queeg

I think Thompson does have huge support. I would like to see him harden to the right.....this is not 1990.

We shall see.

One thing for sure....Thompson is the only one who really scares the media....a lot. They are terrified of him.

“... abortion, gay marriage, and amnesty for illegals.”

On those issues, from a secular perspective he fits right in with the religious LEFT. His views on this are PRO - totally UNCHRISTIAN. SO either way, from a religious ideology or from a secular view, Mitt is a loser and just another RHINO with a sleazy veneer. People are tired of this.

Plus they don’t like his hypocrisy. Honestly sitting on the Board of Directors for Marriott and feigning that he didn’t know that a “draw” for folks included hardcore pornography is a stunning lie. Anyone who reads the news, knows this. Mitt in particular suffers from selective hypocrisy when it benefits him financially. People are tired of that. They don’t want more cultural decline. For a Mormon hard core pornography is a no-no.

Interesting perspective, but troubling for the others in the race.

If such a large portion of the Republican base is hungry for the “empty suit” FDT, it does not say much for the rest of the field.

The people I know that are looking to Fred are not “Freddiebot” type either.

The ONLY reason the LEFT is pumping up Mitt is because like them he is more of a SOCIAL LIBERAL. They know Fred Thompson is a conservative. So, MSNBC will look under every rock and in every crevice trying to use the influence of others to detract from Fred’s conservative views and policies. Truly since when did MSNBC care about Baptists and what LIBERAL Baptist thought? Only since this one doesn’t endorse Fred!

Thompson has it in the bag. He’s the closest thing to Reagan-type-conservatism. And that stuff goes over big-time coast-to-coast. Huckabee is just AS conservative. Would make an excellent VP, (don’t think the regional VP running mate means anything anymore.)

Goodness. This is MSNBC you're reading. They can be trusted to poison the well any time they talk about Republicans.

BTW was just responding to TomGuys “Light Weight” comment. FDT is not an empty suit. That is his appeal.

By your definition, so was Ronald Reagan.

Mitt promise was to uphold the law of the land that was established, but he did not promise the future to them.

He beat the liberals at their own game don't you get it!

Mitt now can be free and has promised to maintain conservative values putting up family conservative judges.

Reel in conservative spending into play and limiting taxes.

Mitt and his family has lived conservative values, I understand you don't like Mormons but be honest when any new legislation came across Gov.Romney desk contrary to family values he veto them.

Plus they don’t like his hypocrisy. Honestly sitting on the Board of Directors for Marriott and feigning that he didn’t know that a “draw” for folks included hardcore pornography is a stunning lie. May I remind you if you have a cell phone/phone or computer and internet access as well as cable TV your household has the same access as the hotels that offer these same amenities for their guess!

After listening to him last night on Hannity and skeletor... I’d say you are full of it. You hear only that which you want to hear and that which furthers your own opinion.

No it doesn't. You are stretching to make some erroneous point.

IIRC, Reagan served 2 terms as governor. That is an executive position.

Senators make speeches and pass resolutions and go on fact-finding trips and deny responsibility for their actions. Executives don't have that luxury.

Your snide post is lacking in substance, as are most of the Freddiebot defenders. When Fred (not his bots) start giving some substance on what he would do, for example, about the illegals, then I'll reassess. So far, he only says 'yeh that is a problem'. Doh!!!! Homer Simpson knows that.

The Freddiebots keep saying Fred with be this or that, Fred will do this or that. But Fred isn't saying that. When Fred starts taking definitive positions, I'll start listening. Until then, he is little more than a John Kerry -- the man with a plan for all occasions; no details, but allot of plans.

That's exactly what it is. He's just who we need right now.
