Canteen Mission Statement

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

Corporal Bill Henry "Willy" Apiata, VC (born 28 June 1972 in Mangakino, New Zealand) is a member of the Special Air Service of New Zealand and the first recipient of the Victoria Cross for New Zealand. He is also the first New Zealander to be awarded a Victoria Cross since 1943. He received the award on July 2, 2007 for bravery under fire during the Afghanistan conflict in 2004, after carrying a wounded compatriot across a battlefield to receive medical treatment.

Queen Victoria chose the design for the new decoration. It is in the form of a Maltese Cross ensigned with the Royal Crest and a scroll inscribed simply "For Valour". It is connected by a V-shaped link to a bar engraved on the face with the recipient's name. The date of the deed for which the honour is bestowed is engraved on the back of the Cross itself. It is worn on the left breast, before all other medals and awards, suspended from a 1½-inch wide red ribbon. Originally the VC ribbon was blue for the Navy, and dark red for the Army. Since 1918, all VC awards use the crimson shade. The medal itself was, and still is, made of bronze melted down from the Russian cannons captured at Sevastopol in the Crimean War.

The Special Air Service of New Zealand (NZ SAS) was formed on July 7, 1955 as an elite New Zealand Army and highly-secretive unit capable of undertaking special missions. It was modelled on the British Special Air Service (SAS).

The New Zealand Government states that NZ SAS is the "premier combat unit of the New Zealand Defence Force", is based in Auckland, and has the motto "who dares wins".

The elite unit is "capable of undertaking unconventional warfare". Its key roles are to undertake overseas missions and respond to domestic terrorist attacks.

The New Zealand SAS is held in high regard internationally - as demonstrated by the United States Presidential Citation awarded to the NZSAS on 7 December 2004.

Thanks for reminding me. I need to get some Deep Woods OFF on the way home today. I am almost out of that and the mosquitoes are horrible now. I dumped some plant pots that had a small amount of water last night. I didn’t realize they had any water in them, until I accidentally kicked one.

Our friend in Corpus Christi said she can’t get into her car without having 10 or 15 get in with her. She has to go on her screen porch and spray herself before going into the house. They are really bad at the coast.

The temps have been in the mid 90 range this week, so the grass is starting to dry out. I’ll have to mow this weekend and hope it holds off until I’m done. I’ve used cow manure compost on my grass for the past few years, and it grows like crazy. The compost also holds the water better, but the grass grows faster.

I got careless and went out on the patio at 6pm unsprayed last night..I had 50 cent piece sized knots on my legs..OUCH!

I won’t forget soon again. I can get away with racing out and spreading some birdseed..but I stopped to put down and fill a newly cleaned birdbath saucer and fill the feeder...I was swarmed.

Well, first off congradulations, Cpl. Apiata and thanks for your service to our country.

Folks, we had a pretty good line of storms move through this morning. Som winds were associated with this line as it moved trhrough from the North.

Our town lost power twice as a result of the storms.

Our DTV had an error message when it rebooted saying the system was "temporaily unavailable".

Needless to say I panicked so i called the service provider to report the problem. Just as i was talking, the system did indeed come back up.

The time was off by five hours so I rebooted both the set-tops to correct the time as well as what might have been a few other errors.

Also, our desktop ran a chkdisk becuase it was on when the power went out in both instances. I didn't get to complete the Norton Anti-Viru runthrough because of the power being out on the desktop. I running it right now.

I think we got about half an inch of rain from the storms this morning. It's settled down now but boy it was sure wild there for awhile.

So, a wild morning here in Southwest Oklahoma.
