Key Evangelical Leader Defends Thompson (Family Research Council Says LA Times Article is Bogus)
The Christian Broadcasting Network ^ | July 10, 2007 | David Brody

Posted on 07/10/2007 7:24:14 AM PDT by hardback

Some good news this morning for Fred Thompson.

Tony Perkins, head of the influential Family Research Council tells The Brody File that the latest news about how Thompson may have lobbied for a pro-choice group is really a non-story.

If you're not familiar with the story, read the latest. Here's what he sent me through an email:

"From what I've heard people are not biting on the story."

They consider the source as well as the modus operandi, someone steps forward who is pro-life and is appealing to conservatives and he is attacked for being pro-abortion in an effort to drive a wedge between him and the base."

"The story looks suspect, but even if there is truth in it, his Senate record is solid on the life issue. I don't think this is going anywhere."

To get positive encouragement from Tony Perkins is significant.

It's not just because of his influence within Evangelical circles but it gives you a peak as to how some other conservative Christian groups may view this as well.

We'll continue to monitor. Meanwhile, The Los Angeles Times hits up Thompson on campaign finance reform today.

Even more to the point, he's being attacked by people are pro-abortion who claim that he's pro-abortion. That's a contemptible tactic, no matter who uses it. (I've mainly noticed it being used by the left, though.)

Correcting my typo and clarifying: Even more to the point, he's being attacked by people who are pro-abortion--who claim in their attack that he's pro-abortion. That's a contemptible tactic, no matter who uses it. (I've mainly noticed it being used by the left, though.)

This whole hit piece is illogical on its face. On the one hand, Thompson’s a lawyer. Liberals worship lawyers, especially when they take on clients that offend half the world, the way the ACLU does from time to time. If true, this story is about a lawyer taking on a client offensivd to the lawyer’s base. Just the sort of lawyer liberals applaud. Yet, here they are trying to nail him for being the kind of lawyer liberals love.

So why, then, is the Times sounding the alarm? Trashing Thompson won’t change the minds of liberals, who already despise him. The Times would have us believe that they are trying to warn conservatives that we may be about to support a faux conservative. Are we to believe the Times is concerned that we may be on the verge of making a mistake? That Thompson is actually more liberal that we think? Is the Times that concerned for our welfare? The Times is offering us voting advice, out of the goodness of its corporate heart? That they don’t want conservatives to make a voting error?

No wonder the Times is spiraling down the drain.

The NY Slimes is trying to sow doubt in conservative minds about Senator Thompson’s conservative credentials because they are afraid that he can beat any of their beloved Democrat liberal socialists. Go Fred!

Told you folks so. At least those that had latched down hard on this hoping it would help your candidates.

The Christian leadership is starting to line up behind Thompson, it’s more then obvious now. Jut as it was more then obvious this story was meant to repel them, it’s doing just the opposite.

I know Romney has been courting them, but they just don’t trust him and believe they have a suitable alternative in Fred. All Romney and his supporters are doing is bringing guys like Perkins out to add the considerable weight of their opinions into he mix, and that won’t help Romney or any of the other candidates to have a large well coordinated base such as that one aligned in favor of ONE candidate.

You’d have been better off attacking him on immigration where his record is a little light or trying to paint him as McCain’s soul brother. Not taking a guy with a solid record on life in the Senate and making him into Rudy. It just isn’t going to work.
