THE 7000 sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk have farewelled Sydney and about $10 million of their money during their five day stay.
Escorted by a flotilla of small boats, the Kitty Hawk left Sydney Harbour after five days docked at the Garden Island Naval Base.
It is estimated the 7000 sailors spent $2 million a day during their visit to Sydney or around $280 a crew member, a day.
The sailors also engaged in various charitable works around the city, including a visit to sick children at the Children's Hospital at Westmead.
This was probably the Kitty Hawk's last visit to Australia, with the aircraft carrier scheduled to be decommissioned in June 2008.

The USS Kittyhawk will not be replaced the the USS George Washington. We are reducing the number of carriers in the US Navy. This is a dumb move.
It's not like Iran, North Korea and China have gone away. We still need 4 carriers permanent deployed. I'd curse the democrats, but the Republican congress and Admiral Cheney are at fault.

The USS Kittyhawk will not be replaced the the USS George Washington. The Kitty Hawk was homeported out of Yokosuka, Japan and the Washington will be taking her place or already has.

Now that we have permanent air bases in Iraq we can afford one less carrier.

That was encouraging for me and says a lot about our warriors..................
