1200 WOAI news has learned that a fast growing racket among illegal immigrants threatens to derail any effort to include a 'tamper proof identification card' into any part of an immigration reform plan.
Officials tell 1200 WOAI news that for between $200 and $800, an illegal immigrant can easily rent the legal documents of a legal U.S. resident.
The illegal rents the Social Security card, U.S. Work Permit, and occasionally even a birth certificate from a U.S. hospital or state drivers license long enough to present them to an employer. If the employer checks them out, they come up legal because they are, in fact, legal.
Adelina Pruneda of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who agreed to speak about the general problem of identity abuse among illegals, says it is a growing worry.
"The criminal organization sells a Social Security card along with a drivers license and a green car, all together, and they charge anywhere between $200 and $600 depending on the authenticity of the entire document."
Officials tell 1200 WOAI news that for the purposes of employment, the illegal simply continues to use the name on the rented documents, which is usually a Latin American name. The renter then moves on to another city or another neighborhood so there is seldom any conflict between the two identities.
One police officer familiar with the scam told 1200 WOAI news it is almost impossible for law enforcement to catch on unless the illegal commits another crime, like drunk driving, where fingerprints might be compared.
"If this guy lives a righteous life, and never has any reason to be fingerprinted, there is no way we can ever catch him," the officer said.
If a U.S. birth certificate is included in the rented documents, the illegal could obtain a U.S. passport, although it is impossible to tell whether that has occurred.
Pruneda says the employer would never have any reason to suspect fraud.
"It wasn't a fake Social Security number, it was a real Social Security number, it just didn't belong to that person," Pruneda says.
She says ICE and other agencies are doing what they can to explain to employers the intracies of document fraud.
"We are constantly working with all different companies to make sure they have an idea of what to look out for," she said.
This growing problem could cause serious complications for efforts to include a 'temper proof' i.d. card as part of immigration reform.
Si`.....with a tan.
No but the SSA knows, and refuses to do anything about it. I guess they are willing to accept any form of income into the social welfare system.
LOL! When I was a teen my mom took me to Nuevo Laredo and they didn’t want to let me back in because of my tan!
The woes of being a brunette, however, are long gone for me!
Somehow by magic I guess VISA and Mastercharge can manage millions of accounts and billions of transactions per day fairly securely...too bad government can’t do the same...
And because so many people are worried about misuse of personal data by the federal government, the federal government will not tell you if someone else is using your SSN. They won't tell you because telling you would violate your privacy rights that you wanted!
Every technological “solution” is defeatable. What about just deporting people who: 1)are very brown and 2) speak Spanish.
Owe the IRS and see how quickly they can find you...
Agreed, but it's one thing at a time, and first things first. You can bail out the water, (deport the illegals), from the boat all day, but if you don't plug the hole, (the border), the bailing will be futile. The water, (illegals), will just keep coming back in.
I also agree with you on the employment enforcement. Making it illegal for business to hire anyone without a green card, and rigidly enforcing it with big fines, is an enormously important step. It would probably begin a massive self-deportation of illegals.
[/scratching head] When did it turn tables to where we the sheeple are being denied rights in order to be so p.c. in ‘helping those less fortunate?’
Doc, it pains me that I heard last week nurses “in support” of government-subsidized medice. I mean, what’s the deal? It’s not like anybody doesn’t KNOW what Canada and Britain are like!!!!
There they go again! Most of the "companies" don't want to know. When an imposter asks for $3 an hour instead of $20 and doesn't speak fairly good English, the employer knows what gives. Will they call ICE? Nope.
With the SS data bases, the IRS can catch them immediately when they get tax withholdings, on the same SS number, from two or more places far apart on the map!
Those people who are peddling excuses should be fired and replaced by people who can do the job.
Stop the f****** excuses and build the damn wall!
Again. This would be a lot less of a problem if we secured the bloody borders and kept them out in the first place.
This is nothing new of course. IMO, it is also being presented in an effort to convince us that we may as well give up because we can’t catch these people.
Well, we can’t catch all of them, but when we do we need to come down very hard. Deterrent is a principle that just seems to elude libs and government bureaucrats.
Beside, there are other ways to deter these people. Like making this country a lot less hospitable to illegals. English only in workplaces would be a good start. No more bilingual crap on the phone (press one...) and quit printing labels for every damn product I buy in spanish and english, with the SPANISH taking up MORE OF THE LABEL than english!
Quit giving free schooling to the children of illegals. Quit letting them into our state colleges. Forget this crapolla about what tuition to charge. Don’t let them in period.
When is the government going to figure out it’s not their country - it’s OURS.
My Wife is always asked if I’m a Mexican (Irish,Welsh,American Indian) because I work and play outside. Must explain all those poeple coming up to me on the street and asking me questions in Spanish.
Is it nurses or nursing organizations? That is like saying all women belong to and are represented by NOW.
I agree. The TX GOP called for [yet another] donation and I said, “no more support until the borders are sealed.”
They tried to say the Democrats were behind this last legislation!!! I said, “let me remind you McCain co-authored that junk. No more support!”
I put mucho $$ across my credit card but don’t gamble. One day, out of the blue, I got a call from Master Card security asking about, IIRC, a $250 gambling charge at a casino and I told them it wasn’t mine. The card was instantly canceled and reissued. It’s uncanny how much credit card companies actually know about each of us and our habits.
Another example is travel. In the last four years I’ve made two round trip auto trips to California from Knoxville, TN without any questions from the relevant credit card company, even though I put almost all of the costs for each trip on the card. My surprise came when I looked at each statement; it was possible to take a map, use the credit card statement, and accurately track wherever I had been and when.
Demand a border fence! Build it NOW!! Beef up the border patrol and close our borders!

I agree, but forgers are making green cards, drivers licences, etc. so realistic that employers can’t detect them as forgeries. Suppose I am an employer and a guy with a dark complexion walks in, I check his Ids and they look OK. Are you going to put me in prison because I couldn’t tell that the guy’s green card was forged? Or “borrowed?”
If I just failed to check the ID, that’s different. I deserve at least a fine for negligence.
I think a big part of the problem is that Bush and Chertoff have been unwilling to demand better IDs and employer enforcement laws. They wanted to roll those proposals in with amnesty.
I don’t think the problem is that we “can’t” enforce employment of illegals, but too many of our “leaders” do not want to do what it takes.
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
I don’t use credit cards that much for that reason. I got a call once from my husband while I was traveling. He told me I had spent enough at Oskosh on my grandkids and that I didn’t need that candy that I just bought at the candy store and that I needed to get on the road so I could be at my hotel before dark.
The use of bad documents is rampant because when illegals are caught making/selling/using bad documents at best they get a slap on the wrist. It is another example of how lack of enforcing laws will cause the problem to escalate.
