On July 4th 1968, Mark Shapiro was among a group of seven deserters and a draft resister who turned up on the lawn of the US Embassy in Stockholm to stage a sit-down protest against the war in Vietnam.
A leading figure in the Stockholm branch of the American Deserters Committee, Shapiro had recently deserted from Vietnam - he came to Sweden via a Japanese fishing boat and a Soviet ship.

The Embassy doesn't have secret service personnel assigned to it to protect the Ambassador or his residence. More than likely, these were Marine Security Guards in civilian clothes or State Department Regional Security Officers. Like so much else that comes out of this guy's mouth, he doesn't know sh#t from shinola.

OK, many European nation are taking part in the WOT, but AGAIN in history the US is doing more than their fair share of the job.
I am European myself, but that doesn’t stop me from speaking the truth.
Europe is a magnificent continent, just look at how Europe went from devastation to prosperity in a mere decade after WWII (partly, this was due to the Marshall Aid of course), but presently, Europe is asleep in many areas.
However, I somehow sense we’re beginning to wake up.
For instance, Sarkozy and Merkel are far better leaders than Chirac and Schröder!

Shapiro, obviously, isn’t much of a patriot. I hope that he, at least, knows enough decency to honor his parents.
One person that did not exactly honor his parents was Olof Palme, a certain (Social Democratic) Swedish PM during the Vietnam War who often criticized The US for fighting Communism in Indochina.
Palme was a son of the Swedish upper class. Whatever one thinks of this part of humanity, one has to admit they know how to contribute to the progress and survival of Sweden as a nation. For instance, the reason ‘tiny’ Sweden managed to defeat Russia time after time (although Sweden also lost some wars) during hundreds of years and could lay siege to (what is today known as) Germany for 15 years during the 17th century, is the clear-sightedness of the Swedish officers and our ‘ruling elite’ (not saying ordinary Swedes, like me, aren’t admirable. I’m actually one of the nicest Vikings you could ever wish to meet).
Olof Palme’s mother was a honorable member of her ‘class’. During WWII she, among other things, made sure that other residents (mostly housewives, as a lot of the men were drafted and away from their homes) in Stockholm were prepared for air strikes and knew what their role was to be if Sweden became a scene of war. Furthermore, she was probably one of the best electioneers working for the foremost antagonists of Socialdemokraterna/The Social Democrats, namely Moderaterna, second largest and most Conservative party in Sweden (presently in charge - suits my economy just fine! They’re cutting taxes and promoting Capitalism). At her local polling place she was always found during elections, trying to persuade people into voting for the Conservatives. I wouldn’t call her a hero, but I’d call her a person who stood up for the values she believed in. That’s more than could be said of Olof Palme, her famous son.
I don’t hate Olof Palme (like a lot of Swedes still do), but despite the fact that he was shot dead on a Stockholm street after having been to the movies with his wife by some unknown disgrace to humanity, it ought to be known that he was very much of a hypocrite (not an uncommon trait among European Socialists).
Truth will remain one of the foremost concerns of humanity.
Sweden was actually involved in the Vietnam War in a way that few Swedish Socialists wished (and wish) to acknowledge. During Olof Palme’s reign, Sweden exported tons of ammunition for the (Swedish made) 84 mm recoilless rifle ‘Carl Gustav’ to Australia, a country that, for obvious reasons, fought Communism side by side with the US troops.
European Socialists and other people who belong to Western Civilization without contributing to it often find great pleasure in bashing the US (just have a look at what’s going on everywhere on the Internet). How noble.
If it was all about teenagers misbehaving, I would’t care, BUT there always seems to be a ‘leading’ European willing to play the role of the US-hating European Idiot. During the 1970’s, it often was PM Olof Palme. Simultaneously, Palme evoked hate among intelligent, hard working Swedes who admired the great nation across the Atlantic they cooperated, traded and did business with.
We Scandinavians are kind of careful of our reputation and certain moral concepts like ‘honor’ and ‘friendship’ and Palme was not a honest person who treated a close ally, The US, in a fair way.
Shapiro is no problem of mine, but I reckon the feelings among true US citizens for this kind of Americans is a little bit like the feelings Olof Palme’s mother housed for her son, the famous Prime Minister.
I guess all of these things, very much like most things that matter in life and eternity, go above the head of Mr Shapiro (maybe he just ought to leave Sweden, go to Jamaica and become a limbo dancer? OK, poor joke).
If you’re too dumb and dishonest to understand what patriotism and civilization is all about, then at least know when to shut the **** up!
