A thief who snatched a purse from an 80-year-old woman in Slidell got a 12-year jail sentence after he pleaded guilty Thursday, the St. Tammany Parish district attorney's office said. Curtis James Fletcher, 43, of Slidell was arrested in March after he took the woman's purse in a store parking lot. The woman was headed back to her vehicle after shopping when he came up behind her and took the purse, knocking her to the ground. The woman, whom authorities did not identify, quickly got up and yelled for help. Several bystanders helped police catch Fletcher as he was fleeing. The woman was prepared to testify at trial in Covington when Fletcher entered his guilty plea. Fletcher has been convicted of four DWI offenses, according to court records; he pleaded guilty to the fourth DWI on March 5, 1997. State Judge Raymond Childress imposed the sentence, and Assistant District Attorney Jack Hoffstadt prepared the state's case. "We pay particular attention to crime against our elderly citizens," District Attorney Walter Reed said in a news release. "Our special unit for prosecution of offenders who prey on the elderly will continue to be aggressive with these types of cases." Fletcher pleaded guilty as charged to purse snatching, which carries a sentencing range from two years to 20 years in prison.

It's nice to have bystanders willing to jump in and help. This guy will be gone for awhile.

pity that the guy who ran a website with instructions on how blow one’s self up in a crowd only got ten years in Britain. I don’t believe in capital punishment but would be tempted to make an exception in that case.

The question I would like to ask this idiot: is the 12 years gonna be worth those few brief moments that he had that old womans purse in his hands (which probalby didnt contain much money to begin with)?

Nah. It's one of us heartless Republicans. He had her SS check in her purse and we just had to try to take it away from her. Rove's orders.

We would have done something different, but we temporarily ran out of baskets of puppies to drop 500 pound bombs on. Plus its summertime, so we couldnt throw her out into the snow.

Well, perhaps if he did ever vote or give a second thought to politics, he might be the type to favor the Democratic party. But these things aren't going to happen in the next week.

This is just another reason why this old lady is armed and alert at all times while out in public.

I hope you don’t carry your weapon in your purse unless you are vigilant 100% of the time.
