Rep. John Doolittle, a consevative California congressman, today joined others in his party rapidly deserting the president on the Iraq war.
At a town hall meeting in Rocklin and then in a meeting with the editorial board of the Sacramento Bee he questioned whether the conflict was worth the loss of more American lives. He said U.S. troops should be pulled back from the front lines "as soon as possible" and the fighting turned over to Iraqi forces.
A longtime supporter of the war, Doolittle called the situation in Iraq a "quagmire" on Thursday. "We've got to get off the front lines as soon as possible," Doolittle said at Rocklin City Hall, the Bee reported. "And in my mind that means something like the end of the year. We just can't continue to tolerate these kinds of losses."

And by the way, we have a ways to go before we surpass the time spent fighting in Vietnam.
I think maybe you are coming into question here to some degree...
You have to wonder what reality this fellow inhabits. Zawahiri came out today and said that Iraq is the central front in the war against Al Qaeda. And yet freedomdefender wants to abandon that front because the war is taking too long. Apparently, he would like the war to end sooner with us suffering more casualties because that is what happened in ‘good’ wars like WII and the Civil War.
Some of those who want us to pull out never thought Iraq was a threat in the first place.
They are devoid of all knowledge and reason.
They are more interested in economy, and state politics.
This enemy is like no other we have ever fought.
If we pulled out two yrs. ago or next week, the IslamOFascist are still coming after us, be it
Calif. London, etc.
And for those who think only about 401Ks and the economy,
They don’t make pockets in shrouds
Just wondering: Have you ever given consideration to changing your nick?
How are you seeing it? Are you up close?
Read Senator Lieberman’s editorial. Tell us where it is wrong.
This Iraq war that you love so much is going to turn Washington over to the Democrats. With the White House in their hands and massive majorities in Congress, they’ll fix things so the GOP never regains power. All because of a war that we didn’t need to fight, against a pipsqueak of foe that was no threat to the US. History will record that Bush and his disastrous war ended the Republican era that Reagan began.
Lieberman is a liberal Democrat. I don't take my cues from liberal Democrats.
We were facing perhaps 400,000 troops in Vietnam, about the same number in Korea and millions of Axis troops were against us in WWII. The number of combatants against us in Iraq is estimated at around 20,000. The Iraq war is very costly considering the force we are up against.
In one paragraph, you’ve said it all.
Just because our military reports to and is controlled by civilian authority doesn't mean that's any old civilian! Not Cindy Sheehan or John Doolittle! I'm sorry I've ever supported John and now have to see him grovel and drown in puss like this thinking.
Damn that Abramoff. Delay has now been cleared of the charges against him, but Doolittle can't wait to see if his charges are cleared without striking out at Gonzales and the President with cowardly crappola like this... yuck!
It's like neither he nor the President understands that anyone even trying to be conservative or christian cannot re-align with Demileftists! That's looking for love in exactly the wrong places!!! It's never worked anytime it's been tried!!!
It wouldn't be so bad if it was just him that's hurting himself, but there are other local electeds that will be hurt when Doolittle shoots himself in the Republican circular firing squad! I have never seen a Party self-destruct so fast and so efficiently at all levels!
It's incredible... and the end of an era!!! But now both Harry Reid and John Doolittle have surrendered to the war on terror. Will that other Mormon running for President be the next to follow suit??? Isn't it about time for that other Mormon Senator whose name escapes me to say something equally as regretable and stupid??? (you know, the one that wanted to remove the constitutional requirement of birth in America for Arnold Schwartzenegger to run for President!!!)(see what I mean???)
My several relatives who have and still are fighting this war know why we are there.
I am for keeping Republicans in D.C. but that alone won’t win the war, fighting the enemy will.
Read the editorial. Don’t be so closed minded.
What is with these people? Rep. Doolittle “today joined others in his party rapidly deserting the president on the Iraq war”?
I don’t see how an arbitrary timeline not established by the armed forces themselves will improve the situation.
Also, while I deeply regret that we are losing service men and women in Iraq, to talk about “tolerat[ing] these kinds of losses” he would make it seem like it was as bad as a sustained D-Day loss, or Iwo Jima over the last few years.
I really wish they would just let our military do the job they were meant to do and stop being so politically correct about it all. I wish the WORLD would wake up to the threat, instead of jumping on the ‘anti-America’ bandwagon (like Putin & Chavez).
This is truly a war against FREEDOM, that is being fought around the globe — it is not just Iraq! The latest Al-Qaeda tape proves that they are hurting for more support, and this defeatist attitude is NOT helping our military — nor is it helping the millions of civilians whose lives are torn asunder by the terrorists on a daily basis. We’re there, let’s get the job done and THEN come home.
I agree that the Iraqi Government should be doing more, but after so many years living under a dictator, it’s a wonder they’ve been able to move forward as far as they have, IMHO.
I’m no military expert, but as bad as the situation in Iraq is, I don’t think it qualifies as a quagmire.
and BTW, in your prior posts you think the Christians were better off under Sadam.
Talk to the over 30,000 Iraqis here in San Diego, most who are Chaldean (Christians) they will tell you what it was like over the many years, with his killing and torture
We are fighting the enemy on their terms. Asymmetrical warfare is an advantage to the smaller force only so long as the superior force does not use the same tactics. If we gave the order to our military to destroy the enemy in 6 weeks, they would do it. This is commonly known as winning a war. We are not fighting a war in Iraq but are acting as a police force for civilians. This is not our job and is extremely costly. We are not even attempting to "win" the war in the conventional sense of "winning" a war.
It should be pointed out that the American people now have the resolve to fight through a grand total of about 2 weeks of World War II before waving the White Flag and surrendering. If they’ll get off of their couches and put down the potato chips long enough to get up and pick up the flag. Yeah, the absense of historical perspective in the general populace annoys me. Royally.
Putting down the potato chips and picking up the flag.
Somewhere there is general looking for a plan. Where have you been?
