US software behemoth Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it would soon open an office in Canada, lamenting tough immigration rules in the United States that make it difficult to hire foreign staff.
"It is about recruiting the best and brightest, and right now, the majority are coming from overseas," Marc Seaman, a spokesman for the world's biggest software company, told The Globe and Mail newspaper.
"The United States has immigration quotas and some limitations for bringing in people from outside the country," he said. "That challenge is an opportunity for Canada, in the sense that this will bring the top software developers to Canada."
The development office, to be opened in Vancouver, a three-hour drive north from Microsoft's Redmond, Washington headquarters, will initially be staffed by some 300 recruits from around the world, the company said.
Eventually, it could grow to house as many as 1,000 employees.
Canada is currently the third-largest source of recruits for Microsoft outside the United States, after India and Japan.
Wonderful policies in Washington ... /sarc
Political stunt from MS.
They didn’t get their cheap labor, so now they’re “forced” to..... what? OBEY THE LAW????
Ping
We should start a boycott of Microsoft and bring that Bill Gates fella to his knees.
Congress needs to look at charging Microsoft an IMPORT DUTY on software that is written outside of America.
Just because it comes through a wire (or internet tube) doesn’t mean that it isn’t “product”.

Lying POS.....................
MIT
HARVARD
CALTECH
STANFORD...hundreds of other fine schools.
Microsoft must have squezzed Canada for MASSIVE tax incentives too!!
This says a whole lot about our education system. This country is doomed if we don’t take back our schools.
Like...whatever! And I say that as a Microsoft stockholder.
The congress critters want only people who will be dependent on government. I can’t believe Bush bought into this. The way we are going, even the liberals are going to figure out what a hellhole we are creating.
Translation: "It's about recruiting the cheapest."
I'd suggest boycotting Microsoft, but Apple's no better.
I agree-—US education is the source of the problem.
I hope Mr. Gates will be moving with his company...
Start by removing all Microsoft products from your computer! The nation will follow! Like a boycott would bother Microsoft. 90% or our computer and associated internet/server software belong us says Microsoft. The only way to beat Mr. Gates is to switch to open source software (still on a Microsoft platform in most cases) or join the Apple bandwagon and eventually suffer the same from them.
Exactly. I agree.
“but have no interest in expanding legal quotas for educated immigrants who would pay lots of income taxes”
That sounds great but the reality is that there is no shortage of people to work those hi-tech jobs in this country.
Yes, there is a shortage of hi-tech workers that will work for LOW wages like they want, but that’s a different issue.
They could easily hire Americans. They’re just trying import cheap, educated labor that they can have total control over thru the force of a H1B visa. Increasing the H1B quota will only serve as more disincentive to American students to pursue technical fields. This is a PR move only.
Yep. My next desktop will be a Mac.
>>It probably has more to do with appeasing the leftists who love Apple in our neighbor to the north. Free BSD is so anti American/capitalist...<<
Actually, I think that Apple is better at hiring US citizens than a lot of other US companies, at least in the core operating system.
No need Vista is killing him slowly.
