Louisiana ACLU Director Stepping Down

NEW ORLEANS -- Joe Cook has formally retired from the Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union after directing the state's chapter for more than a decade.

Cook, who announced several months ago that he would retire at the end of June, is moving to Norfolk, Va.

Monroe attorney and ACLU spokesman Charles Kincade said Cook will be remembered for standing up for the U.S. Constitution even when doing so was unpopular, especially in matters of separation of church and state.

Cook has led several lawsuits to stop certain types of prayer in public schools or government meetings throughout Louisiana, most often in Tangipahoa Parish.

Cook is moving to Norfolk to devote more time to family and friends.

Kincade said that the Louisiana ACLU is in the process of narrowing the list of replacements for Cook.

Well, Cook will just be replaced by another (hopefully less active) communist sympathizer.

This is more of an alert to the people in VA - remember what became of that OTHER former ACLU director there?

Really. Does that mean the part of the 1st Amendment he entirely ignored? The part that goes: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech...

Funny how only Judeo-Christian religious speech and exercise isn't covered according to the Anti-Christ Lawyers Union. However having sex in public IS.

He wants to retire and devote more time to family and friends. Isn’t that special. The ACLU takes positions in lawsuits to undermine families. Does he really think that family is important? I would think he thinks the most important thing in life is taking lawsuits to ridiculous extremes. He thinks it’s important that nobody will be offended by seeing “In God We Trust” on money, saying “Under God” in the pledge, or God forbid, somebody driving by a mountain with a cross on top be offended by a message of what that cross represents to some people.

I just have a hard time believing that this dude thinks family relationships are important. He spent time in a professional career trying to break down elements of family life.

That SHOULD be “put-down” not stepping down. IMHO

Can you shed some light on the former ACLU dictator of the Virginia chapter for those of us who don’t know/don’t remember?

That’s funny.

They didn’t show up at all to help stop the Uniform Child Abduction Prevention Act.
