New North Carolina Poll Shows Fred Thompson Surging To Double-Digit Lead Over Giuliani

Lane did not know just how fast his prophecy would come true! A poll from North Carolina just out this afternoon, and conducted this past Monday now has Fred Thompson vaulting to a huge lead over Rudy Giuliani! This poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, a non-partisan research group, surveyed 583 likely Republican voters. The results:

34% Fred Thomspon 15% Rudy Giuliani 13% Newt Gingrich 21% Undecided

Here is the actual text of the story:

On the Republican side, former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson continues to lead the race, with 34 percent support. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's support fell for the second month in a row, to 15 percent, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich garnered 13 percent support. Another 21 percent of GOP voters said they were still undecided.

Public Policy Polling, a non-partisan research group, surveyed 629 likely Democratic primary voters and 583 likely Republican primary voters on Monday. The surveys have margins of error of 3.8 percent and 4 percent, respectively.

Interestingly, when I looked up the website for Public Policy Polling, I found the results of their poll from June 6:

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson has moved into the lead in the North Carolina Republican Primary. Thompson's support jumped from 25% of likely Republican primary voters in May to 37% in this month's poll, ousting Rudy Giuliani from the lead. In the Democratic race, John Edwards still leads his home state with the support of 30% of like Democratic primary voters.

The poll in the story Lane posted earlier is from a different outfit, and even though it was just reported on by the New York Sun today, the details say the poll was conducted June 13-15 and was a poll of "active voters." The poll showing Fred way ahead is a poll of "likely Republican voters" -- in other words, the people likely to vote in the Republican primary!

This poll shows huge momentum for Fred, moving from behind just over a month ago, to now leading Giuliani by 19%.

According to Novak (so take that for what it is), Newt has told others that he’ll stay out if Fred runs strong, and will probably run if Fred’s campaign turns out to be a dud.

He hasn’t hinted that he’d step aside for any other candidate, so it looks like Newt might be tacitly in Fred’s corner for now.

You may be right, though 2008 will be the test of it. I live in Raleigh, and the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area is the most liberal part of the state, and has been growing steadily more liberal, so from here it certainly looks like you're right. I'm not sure the same can be said for the rest of the state, however, as many of Raleigh's suburbs are even more solidly Republican than they have been in the past.

2008 will be a test, not only because of the Presidential election, but because of tough races for US Senate and Governor. Elizabeth Dole is one of the DNC's top targets in the senate, and they may be running the very liberal Rep. Brad Miller against her. The governor's race is open, since Mike Easley is term limited out. The likely GOP candidates, Bill Graham and Fred Smith, seem more conservative than those in recent elections, and their likely opponent, Richard Moore, definitely seems more liberal than Easley.

Like the rest of the country, the political landscape in North Carolina has certainly become more polarized, but it's too early to say yet whether this state is more liberal. The state is still more rural than urban, and Down East hasn't become liberal the last time I checked. I do think that, in the general election, a nominee like Fred Thompson can probably count on North Carolina's votes, but might have more of a fight against Edwards or Obama than against Hillary here.

Oops.. I just checked my facts and found I was wrong there. North Carolina does have a majority urban population now. The rural vote is still very significant, however.
