Lt. Col. Thomas Mooney, a Cranston native and the U.S. defense attaché in Cyprus, was found dead in a remote rural area of the Mediterranean island Monday, four days after he disappeared with his diplomatic car, according to wire reports and a statement from U.S. Ambassador Ronald L. Schlicher.

Its inconceivable to me, said Stephen Laffey, the former Cranston mayor who has been a lifelong friend of Mooney. He loved being in the military. He was happy to serve his country.
Mooneys home in the United States was in Florida, according to Nick Perry, another childhood friend who visited Mooney twice in Cyprus, most recently in May. Im not a psychiatrist, said Perry, speaking long distance yesterday from Turkey, but I know this guy probably as well as anyone on earth. I just dont buy that he committed suicide.
Were devastated by this, said Glenn Surabian, another friend originally from Edgewood. He was one of the greatest guys around, always there for you as a friend.

My first thoughts on this man’s death....is that he discovered something he wasn’t supposed to. JMHO...
18% of the population on Cyprus is Islamic.
that seems to be the consensus but unfortunately the truth probably won’t come out and Thomas’ name will forever be attached to suicide which is a shame as he served his country honorably for 27 years!

i’ve read that statistic too..also i’ve read that he possibly could have been ambushed...don’t know what happened but will never believe he took his own life.
donna
i read this article and hopefully news will come out to disprove the awful findings from the first autopsy...Thomas would never have taken his life! NEVER!!

Just under 300,000 possible perps...
You sound like you knew this guy.
According to earlier reports, the guy committed “suicide” by stabbing himself in the neck. Hmmm.......
what does perps mean??
Welcome to FR. I am so sorry about your brother-in-law.
You have come to the right place to get the truth out about this fine man.
In no way does he fit the profile of a suicidal person.
thomas was my beloved brother-in-law. i am married to his youngest brother. Thomas was like a big brother to me and he was a beloved uncle to my 3 children. He has a large loving family and an even larger, loving extended family of friends who know him well. He will be missed by so many people. It is still unbelievable that he is no longer with us. I just want the truth to come out but like someone on FR told me...live with the knowledge that he served his country honarably and also with the knowledge of what a wonderful, loving, funny, honorable man that he was.
RIP Thomas...I love and miss you!!!
Donna
Sorry for your loss. May the gentleman rest in peace.
perp is short for perpetrator—the one who committed the criminal act.
Hmmm...is right! There is no way that anyone who know thomas believes this b.s.
Hopefully the truth will come out for everyone’s sake...Thomas doesn’t deserve this!!
Donna
I agree. I have gotten some very good ideas from people on FR which i have passed on to the family contact. Thomas’ death is still under investigation and hopefully the family will be able to print the truth which will show that Thomas did not take his own life!!! He loved life and his family and friends too much!!
