National Mall Cleared For Fear of Tornados
WASHINGTON — U.S. Park Police evacuated thousands of people from the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday afternoon, as severe weather interrupted July Fourth festivities.
Authorities used loudspeakers to ask Independence Day revelers to clear off the lawn and head to safer locations, including museums lining the National Mall, until further notice.
The National Weather Service has placed all of Maryland under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. ET. That means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. A tornado warning was also issued for an area of Montgomery County, Md., a suburb of the city, and funnel clouds had been spotted in the county. A tornado was also reportedly spotted in Columbia, Md., part of the Metro D.C. area.

The Washington DC national mall has been evacuated
tornado was spotted in Columbia MD as well
Though it looks like my radar pictures are a little old.
That radar image is 75 minutes old.
So much for yahoo weather.
Mall evacuated based on procedure last year... we had severe around the same time of day (non-tornadic).
Been following it here:

Looks like part of the core of the storm will pass over the city in the next 45 min - 1 hr.
Another Vornado Watch!
Folks have spent the day passing through security to get to the mall for the concert, now they’re evacuated. Will the concert/fireworks go on?
I saw that one in Columbia, I think. It was a low, dark, fast moving cloud, going nearly due east, nearly at right angles to the prevailing thunderstorm movement. It appeared to be just South of Route 175, in the middle of Columbia.
The leading angle of cloud was rotating around a line that appeared to be at a 45 degree angle towards the ground out in front. I couldn’t see the lower part of the cloud, it was below a treeline.
I guess whoever put ‘notbreaking’ in the keywood list is has a tv on and is sitting safely away from a tornado’s path at the moment. ((shaking head))
I’m guessing by your nick that you’re a meteorologist?
That’s an impressive picture of the event. Thanks.
good question!
