DES MOINES Bill Clinton plunged back into the presidential campaign fray Monday in the role of doting spouse, telling thousands of Democratic supporters here that his wife is better qualified to be president than he was when he first ran for the job.
"I'd be here tonight if she asked me, even if we weren't married," he said.
Introducing Hillary Clinton at the state fairgrounds, the ex-president, who has stayed largely outside public view in the early phase of the campaign, sought to dispel perceptions that his wife is a tough person to like.
He stood behind her as the couple were introduced to the crowd, his hands resting affectionately on her shoulders. Clinton described his wife as "by a long stretch the best qualified non-incumbent I have ever had a chance to vote for in my entire life."
After his introductory speech, he hugged her warmly, handed off the microphone, then sat and watched as the Democratic front-runner called for universal healthcare and an energy policy that eschews foreign oil.
She also made plain that her husband, immensely popular among Democrats, would remain an influential advisor.
Closing her half-hour speech, she said: "I will have some good help along the way."
Campaign organizers estimated the crowd at 7,000. People waited in line for hours to hear the Clintons, who arrived nearly an hour late. Sitting on hay bales and risers, some members of the audience sported buttons criticizing President Bush ("Bush Bin Lyin' ") and touting potential "First Gentleman" Bill Clinton.

Totally agree!
“Bill Clinton plunges into White House campaign”
...I wish he’d “plunge” into a sea of pirhanas.
This is a great opportunity to dispell a Clinton myth.
Lets keep in mind this guy on his ‘best day’ didn’t garner 50% of the votes cast nationally.
In short, without a divided GOP ticket TWICE he would have lost.
Be sure to thank PJB and Perot.....not to mention George the Elder for raising taxes after saying he would not.
Bill Clinton is helping Hillary for one reason only: So he can select the White House Interns, should Hillary win the Presidency.
Old Bill, the rump ranger is going yummy all them new little political staffers of Hillary’s, oh yum. Just have to make sure they get their dresses dry cleaned.
If this guy gets back in the WH it will be a tragedy.
He will never darken that door.Even if she wins.Ol’Slick will have a “heart attack” just before or after the election(my bet before).Arkancide knows no boundaries
That and the fact that Mrs. Bill Clinton has absolutely nothing to offer the country other than the fact that she is married to Bill and rode his coattails to the top. I'm surprised that Barack Obama or John Edwards have not said that if they are elected, they too would make Bill Clinton the "ambassador to the world" or something like that. That would pretty much take away everything Mrs. Bill Clinton has to offer.
I think this really hurts her - it clearly shows she hasn’t a chance on her own.
It is very early in the campaign for her to panic and have to have her husband run for her.
He's right ... if you just want more socialism.
An HOUR LATE!!! Typical....could care less about other people’s time!
You know you’re in trouble when you have to resort to an impeached, disbarred, womanizing, sexual harassing, proven liar of an ex-president to campaign for you.
Good idea. Maybe the eventual Republican nominee should use Bill Clinton’s name as a possibility as “ambassador” to win some Democrat votes. Then send him overseas and keep him there! LOL!
What do you have against pirhana’s ???
There's just so much wrong with those words. I think I'm going to lose my breakfast!
