The attempted London car bombings were meant to be detonated by calls to mobile phones in the two vehicles, but failed for technical reasons, the Evening Standard reported Monday.

Note to self: make sure bomb explodes so that cell phone trigger can not be traced back to my cell phone.

How long til the NYT tells us what the mistake was, so they can get it right next time?

Wait. The NYT will be sure to tell 'em precisely what the 'technical' reason was - and EXACTLY how to do it right next time...

They musta been using my carrier, Verizon.

And I thought AT&T/Cingular was bad,....

Maybe there’s a reason that Apple chose AT&T/Cingular for the new iPhone. Maybe they know something I don’t.

Well, actually Steve Jobs probably knows a lot of things that I don’t.

It makes me wonder if the Brits have some ability to block such calls somehow?

Am I the only one who thinks these guys weren’t ready for prime time? Their ‘bomb’ was about as low tech as it gets, gas and some propane tanks, not bad as an incidiary, but not the kind of explosion to propel nails as shrapnel.

That’s another good reason for the cat to stick to its land line. If I can’t trigger a bomb with my mobile phone, I don’t want one. I’ll wait until the technology matures, thank you.

This is gonna result in even more “Dumb Paki” jokes in Britain.

If that is what happened, the NYT will run a story explaining in detail the countermeasures necessary to defeat blocked calls.

Thank you.

Yes, 1979, thanks to Jimah Cahtah.

The failure of the rescue attempt was a black day for me. I was angered and depressed that we failed in the rescue attempt. That was also Carter’s fault. It should have been done earlier with twice the number of military and equipment and afterwards, we should have flattened Tehran.

We're still paying for Carter's weakness to this very day. Carter is a lying, weaselling, coward, traitor and scumbag.

Of course, that's just my opinion,..I could be wrong. But I don't think so.

Remember all those trac phones bought by all of those muslim “students”? Untraceable. Use it for one call then use it as a trigger.

The propane tanks were designed to vent under pressure rather than explode.

It is some, small comfort to see that the islamic terrorists have been pushed to immolate themselves with no loss of innocent lives.

At some point, they will find a bomb maker who will build some dangerous devices. I hope we keep one step ahead of the bad guys.

You're right on the button. I couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks.

Our failure in Iran 1979-80 enboldend the Islamofacists...our failure to respond forcefully to the WTC bombing in ‘93 and the USS Cole essentially gave them “permission” to seek bigger targets and higher casualties.

If we pull out of Iraq we may as well hoist a white flag with crescent.

Wouldn't matter. The cell structure itself maintains a record of all the calls. How else would they bill them, keep track of minutes, etc?

However they would have to recover the chip with the address of the detonator cell phone, so they could search the records to see what numbers had called it. Best call from and to prepaid phones, like a Tracphone. Calling from a phone booth will generally be OK as well. Dispose of the calling phone, a vat of acid would be good, but throwing it in the river, suitably weighted down and/or holed, would also be OK.

No need to wonder why the cell phones didn’t work. See below. US Intelligence notified the Brits two weeks ago that nite spots would be targeted. Seems the memo listing potential targets never made it to the Scots, hence the Airport caper.

http://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscellaneous/news/2004/10/65378

Excerpt:
MONTERREY, Mexico — It was the reporters who noticed first. Unable to call their editors while covering the weddings of the rich and famous, they asked the priest why their cell phones never worked at Sacred Heart. His reply: Israeli counterintelligence.

In four Monterrey churches, Israeli-made cell phone jammers the size of paperbacks have been tucked unobtrusively among paintings of the Madonna and statues of the saints.
