Rep. Jo Ann Davis, battling a recurrence of cancer, voted in the House on only four days last month out of 16 days when votes were cast.
The 1st District Republican is getting chemotherapy treatments and trying to work in Washington when she is well enough to travel, her chief of staff said last week. Otherwise, she works from her Gloucester County home.
"She has her good weeks, and she has her tough weeks," aide Chris Connelly said. "The chemo has made it difficult for her to get to Washington."
"Chemo makes people sick," he added. "It's a difficult road that she's on." Davis still is confident, he said, that she's headed in the right direction.
Davis has maintained a curtain of privacy since announcing in March that she was battling breast cancer again. She declined to be interviewed for this article.
Davis was admitted to a Richmond hospital Jan. 29 and underwent a medical procedure for what later was described as a ruptured ureter.
Early in March, she said she had suffered a recurrence of cancer and was starting chemotherapy. After about a 10-week absence from Washington, she returned in April.
Lawmakers from Virginia want her to take the needed time to recover, said Rep. Frank R. Wolf, R-10th and the dean of the Virginia delegation in the House. Her colleagues "rally around and make sure nothing falls through the cracks," he said.
When he saw Davis last, she was "very positive, very upbeat," Wolf added.
For the first six months of the year, she has been present and voted on 22 percent of more than 600 roll-call votes. A number of votes are procedural or deal with naming post offices or days of commemoration.
