On this July 4, we would do well to renounce nationalism and all its symbols: its flags, its pledges of allegiance, its anthems, its insistence in song that God must single out America to be blessed.
Is not nationalism -- that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder -- one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred?
These ways of thinking -- cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on -- have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of power.
National spirit can be benign in a country that is small and lacking both in military power and a hunger for expansion (Switzerland, Norway, Costa Rica and many more). But in a nation like ours -- huge, possessing thousands of weapons of mass destruction -- what might have been harmless pride becomes an arrogant nationalism dangerous to others and to ourselves.

I feel sorry for the communist Zinn. I feel pride and get choked up when gazing at the flag during the national anthem. What does Zinn feel but disdain and contempt when he sees the flag waving and chumps like me caring about it. What a sad, pathetic little man.

Why don’t these people just leave? I mean, they hate the country. They hate the freedom. They hate free enterprise. They hate everybody that is successful. But they want to stay and whine.
On this July 4th, we would do well to strap Howard Zinn to a large pyrotechnic rocket and light the fuse.
And yet Marxism, international communism, an ideology which Mr. Zinn adores, managed to "engender" all of those things without the assistance of nationalism.

Well put. The liberal mind, truly, is a thing to behold. It never ceases to amaze me that a person could mock the same institutions that allow them to exist.
You should have said “If you don’t like it, come and try to take it down”. This guy has got to be one of the biggest cowards to ever put pen to paper.
It’d be fun to commission a poll of those Americans who fly the flag at their home (either daily or on holidays), and ask them their political affiliation.
My guess is, most Democrats and leftists purposely refrain from displaying the American flag.
I guess the Zinn family will make sure that all of the sharp objects around the house are put out of Howard’s reach before Wednesday.
Am I the only person on this thread who experiences a visceral desire to punch a hippy in the face whenever this “hate America” crap raises it’s ugly head?
