Art Bell announces retirement

Posted on 07/02/2007 2:21:54 AM PDT by djf

Early tonight on Coast to Coast, Art announced he is retiring. Presumably to spend more time with his wife and new daughter.

While there is the standard mundane crew who break out the tin foil hat jokes (they don't even break out the tin foil, just the jokes), I have been listening to Art for many years and feel that some kind of outlet for the type of material and people he interviews is needed. It only takes one of the tens of thousands of sighting of UFO's to be a REAL UFO to change the world. So to be fair we need to wish him well. His place in broadcasting history is secured. I hope he maintains some influence in C2C.

We know what we know. But we don't know what we don't know!

Correction, Art is 62 and his wife is 23. Let me guess, you must be a female. lol!!

If you were a man you'd understand.

Isn’t this the 8th time. I thought he already retired.

Again? He’ll be back when he feels like it. I am glad George Noori is on board to provide consistency and reliability.

I don’t think Phil Hendrie will be a real competitor. He would draw a different type of audience.

I like Barbara Simpson, too, but I think she would grill the phony guests, and the station wouldn’t like that.

I don’t understand why Art seems to have abandoned his son.

I know; what does he work, two nights a week? 6 hours a week? Doesn’t he enjoy it??

I understand she is younger than his own daughter.

Are you jealous, bitter or indifferent?

Uh no. I am happily married thanks, to someone actually born in my generation.

I just find older men, like 63 years old, hitting on 20 year olds, slightly pathetic. Fact is most men who stoop to this, generally have money, and are well off, and are too stupid, obsessed or blinded to realize they are being taken for their money. Many times these relationships end in disaster for the old fool.

I knew an old guy that did something very similar, and he got taken for almost everything. His youngster wife is no where to be seen. He cries a lot now.

We actually tried to warn him. LOL!

Any other questions?

Art is 62 and his wife is 23.

Oh, well there is a big difference.

Let me guess, you must be a female.

You guessed wrong.

If you were a man you'd understand.

Oh, I fully understand a fool and his money are soon parted, not to mention that sudden loss when his child like wife decides he's boring and no longer fun.

Too funny!

...You sure sound bitter. I don’t have Art’s money either, but I am still happy for him. P.S. viagra is awesome!! Happy 4th.

I was listening live nine or ten years ago when he pulled his first “retirement” out of the blue. He loves the attention these “surprises” bring. He has done the same retirement a couple of times since then. I think alot of folks are tired of his drama.

Wonder how long that will last?

3 or 4 months. Art can't retire. I'm surprised he hasn't realized that yet.

He’s not retiring fully. He will be a fill-in host now and then and remains active in Coast programming.

In my simple and humble opinion, Art has lost his "interesting" factor.

But with that said, I hoped he would remain active in the biz as he seems to realize babies are a gift of God, not something to be disposed of when inconvenient.

How many times does this make that Art has retired?

That photo of Art and his new wife reminds me of what a fellow grad
student (from The Philippines) said to me:
"If you don't find a wife here in America...come visit me in
Manila. You can set up a card table in the middle of Manila looking
for a wife and you'll soon have a line about 10 city blocks long.
It's one advantage you have as a guy from the USA."

“Art was totally devastated for approximately four months.”

I remember when he came back on the air after Ramona died. He talked of all the thoughts that had crossed his mind (mainly suicide as I recall). I’m glad he found a new “love” in his life, but my estimation of him went down quite a bit after that. (Plus, I hardly ever listened on the weekends.)

Back in the day Art was very good and ENTERTAINING. And I recall him standing up for Bush against any of the 9/11 Conspiracy types and was pro Iraq War. But, I haven’t heard him now for quite a while.

Some classic shows though - I have missed listening to him. (I tried to listen to George Norry twice - couldn’t do it!)

Good luck to Art. Maybe when he comes back out of retirement - again - it will be at a better time for me to tune in once in awhile.

“...after that.” To clarify - the “that” is marrying so quickly rather than waiting a bit more than 4 months. Of course at the age of 60+ you can’t wait too long to get remarried!

One more than Cher, I think.
