Hispanic voters could make GOP pay for defeat of immigration legislation

With the Senate immigration bill dead and buried, political activists say their next battle will be at the ballot box, where Republicans risk losing hard-earned votes among Hispanic immigrants.

Lawmakers dealt a lethal blow to the immigration bill Thursday, making it highly unlikely Congress will enact any broad changes in immigration law until well after the presidential election in 2008. As policy analysts study the fallout, some say the defeat could prompt immigrants — the nation's fastest growing group of new voters — to swing toward Democratic candidates.

Democrats could gain more Hispanic voters, who make up the nation's largest and fastest growing minority. Except for Cuban-Americans, the nation's Hispanics traditionally have voted for Democrats, but many were swayed toward President Bush in 2004, when he received a landmark 40 percent of the Hispanic vote.

With the immigration bill's collapse, Republicans could lose such gains, experts said.

Some more folks that “just don’t get it”. Hispanic Americans do not like illegals. Folks who endured years of filling out paperwork, and shelling out large sums of money, do not like getting their hard work and sacrifice to be mocked! This is what this amnesty bill would have done: mocked their long, hard struggle to become Americans.

That is a good point. The LEGAL Hispanic voters (the only ones who can vote, technically) who are already Americans are not necessarily fans of this failed bill.

The ILLEGAL Hispanic voters (or future Democrats, so they hope) will punish whoever killed this bill. But they can't vote, can they?

Worth repeating.

The idea that illegal aliens would vote GOP or their children would out of gratitude for getting legal status has been conclusively debunked. What the GOP should do is pursue an immigration policy that will serve the nation’s highest interests, not out of a craven political calculation designed to win Hispanic votes in the future.

Let the democrats have the 15% or whatever of the population that is Hispanic (of which less than 1 in 5 actually vote). We'll be happy to take all the Reagan democrats, middle class blacks, Asians etc. that were extremely PO'ed by this amnesty debacle.

In fact I hope the democrat nominee in 2008 makes amnesty the centerpiece of their campaign to win all those precious Hispanic votes...

A presidential candidate that had the guts to stand up and tell the American people that amensty bill is complete madness, wins in a landslide. Reagan Democrates, Moderates, Conservatives would vote for this person. This is an issue that could change the political landscape.

There are two types of “Hispanic” voters:

There are “Hispanic” voters. They’re gonna vote overwhelmingly Democrat no matter what. They’re “victims,” and they want goodies at other people’s expense. The ‘Pubbies don’t have a chance at these votes.

Then there are Americans of Hispanic descent. They’re Americans, period. The ‘Pubbies had a shot at these votes. Unfortunately for the Hispanderers, these folks dislike illegal immigrants as much as any other American does. So, thanks to President Jorge Arbusto, John McInsane, Weepy Voinovich, Trenthorn Leghorn, Lindsey Gramnesty, and a few others, the ‘Pubbies have pi$$ed way these votes, too.

Republicans: The don’t call use The Stupid Party for nuthin...

no kidding...what gain?

Bush got a little jump up in 2000 and a debatable one again in 2004 from old time Tex-Mexican and the favorite son thing...many of whom may still be with him.

Cubers used to be solid GOP.

Maybe a few Colombian or other South American aristocrat expat types....who know first hand about collectivist movements

Aside from that, Latinos vote almost as bad as most blacks or Jews.

Why we want another 150 million or so in the next generation escapes me.

Most hispanics except for a handful on this forum identify with the illegals because they are fellow hispanic travelers.

Simple as that.

Let white folks try that.

Say what you will, I think it's very nice that sworn enemies of the GOP are willing to dispense so much free advice.

If the GOP takes it, and so far they have been, then the truth of what everybody's father has been telling them for years about the quality of free advice is proven once again....

The BIG loss for the GOP will be not from losing the illegal Mexican vote, but from losing the votes of their own Conservative base. The turncoat senators just proved that they wanted the votes of the illegal underclass more than they wanted the votes of the base that put them into office. Now they will have neither. The loyal old Republican elephants have long memories, and they won’t forget who voted wrong, come the next election of the RINOS.
