US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

A couple of years back, there was the RUMINT that a series of terror attacks would begin in Europe and work their way towards the US. It didn’t occur at that time, but I’m wondering the latest British incidents could be the foreshock of the main event. Followup RUMINT from DEBKA (so consider the source) indicates jihadi comms similar to pre 911 and either the Spain or London attack. Also the release of the document stating that there will be a spectacular attack this summer. Thoughts or rememberance?

OPINION-SPECULATION: Probably.
As you know what I always say:

Declassified CIA Documents Point to Killers of Israeli Military Attache in Washington in 1973

On July 1, 1973, Col. Yosef Alon - a charismatic former fighter pilot and the assistant air and naval attache at Israel’s Embassy in Washington - was gunned down in his suburban Maryland driveway.

Recently declassified CIA documents, Alon’s voluminous FBI case file, and interviews reveal that years after the shooting, the agency received a tantalizing tip about who likely pulled off the assassination and how the deadly plot was carried out.

On the same day as the murder, monitors from the State Department heard the PLO’s Voice of Palestine radio announce: “Col. Yosef Alon...was executed.... His is the first execution operation carried out against a Zionist official in the U.S.’’

According to portions of the FBI file that remain secret, “A sensitive source advised that the Black September organization was responsible for the crime.’’

The CIA had learned from a “Fedayeen senior official’’ that two students had entered the U.S. via Canada and traveled on either Lebanese or Cypriot passports to Washington.

In addition, Black September had tried to detonate three car bombs in New York City in March 1973.

I believe for carbombings to be successful they have to be a constant threat. It’s not going to work if you do one or a set every 6 yrs. People will worry, but life will go on. It will be interesting to see if this ends up being an isolated incident or the beginning of an organized mid/long-term campaign in Britain (or probably Europe as a whole). I think they are waiting for the other shoes to drop over there and we aren’t sure what’s going on. To “core AQ” this type of activity is pleasing and an overall goal, but it is probably not what they are currently planning for. All the background noise recently has been about a spectacular event somewhere... this recent episode doesn’t feel like it was it.

I keep thinking that the “failed” car bomb attempts might be sleight of hand, distractions to take eyes off of what’s really happening - whatever that might be.

Muslim Council of Britain declares ‘condemnation is not enough’
Now we finally hear what we should have heard all along. Will actions follow, or will these too prove to be empty words?

Britain’s most influential Muslim umbrella group today signalled a major shift in policy as it urged its communities to play a key and potentially decisive role in the fight against terrorism.

Declaring that “condemnation is not enough”, leaders of the Muslim Council of Britain, which has 400 affiliate organisations, voiced its most robust message yet and appealed to all Muslims to work hand in hand with the police.

The message carries dangers for the MCB, which has been criticised by radical activists for being too close to the government and the establishment.

But today Muhammad Abdul Bari, the MCB secretary general, said the current crisis meant that issues of conflict between the government, the police and Muslim communities - who have clashed in the past over anti-terrorist incidents and foreign policy - needed to be put to one side.

“When the house is on fire, the concern must be not to blame each other but to put the fire out. Our country is under threat-level critical.

“Those who seek to deliberately kill or maim innocent people are the enemies of us all. There is no cause whatsoever that could possibly justify such barbarity.”

He said the police and security services “deserve the fullest support and cooperation from each and every sector of our society, including all Muslims.”

All the background noise recently has been about a spectacular event somewhere... this recent episode doesn’t feel like it was it.

Agree, doesn't measure up to it. Had it works, there would have been a degree of spectacularness, but not what is rumored. As Scotland Yard runs this down, the AQ connection of these doctors is becoming more apparent. However, their training was very much lacking, though their opsec caught the authorities off guard. This could cause other cells to go to ground and upset any special timing that is the trademark of an AQ attack. Still, as Hans Solo would say "I've got a bad feeling about this."

OPINION: You have a point, SlowBoat407, but I think the endless promotion of jihad and the “do what you can do” propaganda...may be encouraging jihadis and their supporters to do whatever they can do.

As for the UK car bombings, that’s a different matter.
This is a global jihad-AQ-related series of incidents
which are connected to eah other.
