RUMINT - consider source
Debka is reporting Syria is delaying any attack until mid November. The attack was part of Imanutjob’s prediction of a ‘hot’ summer. If true, I suspect that the presence of 3 US carriers in the region may have caused them to rethink their plans and a delay would result in fewer carriers in the region at the time of any attack.

Possible Attack on the U.S. Within Ninety Days
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1874807/posts
Counterterrorism expert Juval Aviv met recently with reporters at Fox News and revealed information, which he believes is accurate, concerning an imminent Al Qaeda attack on five to seven American cities simultaneously.
“I predict, based primarily on information that is floating in Europe and the Middle East, that an event is imminent and around the corner here in the United States. It could happen as soon as tomorrow, or it could happen in the next few months. Ninety days at the most, said Mr. Aviv.
Mr. Aviv knows of that which he speaks. He is a former Israeli Counterterrorism Intelligence Officer and has also served as a special consultant to the U.S. Congress on issues of terrorism and security. He is best known as the source of the 1984 book, Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team by George Jonas, on which Steven Spielberg’s film Munich was based. He is also the author of The Complete Terrorism Survival Guide: How to Travel, Work and Live in Safety (2003); and Staying Safe: The Complete Guide to Protecting Yourself, Your Family, and Your Business (2004).
Currently, Aviv is the president of Interfor, Inc., a corporate investigations firm in New York City.
So it is clear that Aviv has the background and experience in global terror and its operating methods to warrant taking his current warnings seriously. It would be foolish to ignore or minimize this counterterrorism veterans expert prognosis. Mr. Aviv told Fox that, from what his sources have been relating, sleeper cells that already have been placed inside the continental United States are on the verge of carrying out major attacks.
What theyre going to do,” he explained, “is hit six, seven or eight cities simultaneously to show sophistication and really hit the public. This time, which is the message of the day, it will not only be big cities. Theyre going to try to hit rural America. They want to send a message to rural America: “Youre not protected. If you figured out that if you just move out of New York and move to Montana or to Pittsburgh, youre not immune. Were going [to] get you wherever we can and its easier there than in New York.”
While this prediction leaves most Americans feeling helpless, fearful and frustrated, Juval Aviv recommends that we at least do what we can. He suggests that for the next few months, if we are traveling by public transportation, we should equip ourselves with a bottle of water, a hand towel and a flashlight. He reminds us that many fatalities in the London tube and Madrid train attacks occurred from victims who breathed in the lethal fumes from bomb components and burning gasoline. Had these people had wet towels to cover their mouths and noses, they would have had a much better chance of survival.
Mr. Aviv is a very strong proponent of If you See Something Say Something school of preparedness. He stated that a great number of potentially lethal terror attacks in Israel have been and still are thwarted by the intelligent actions on the part of alert, aware and watchful citizens.
Americans must do the same, he advises. The global war on terror is not somewhere over there in the Middle East. It is here on our own soil. If ever there were a time to be especially vigilant, the time is now.
Let us hope and pray that these vicious enemies and their depraved plans against our citizens and our country, which come out of a wicked ideological brew, will be forestalled and prevented, and the perpetrators apprehended. So far, our law enforcement, military, counter-terrorism and intelligence personnel have done a stellar job. At the same time, and as we all know, we have to be lucky 100% of the time, and the terrorists have to be lucky only once.
So stay alert stay away from crowds and if you see something, say something! You could save hundreds, if not thousands, of lives.
Sorry, folks, I just found out that post #2484 is a recycled story from two years ago!

Coalition Continues to Target al Qaeda Leaders in Iraq
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Aug. 1, 2007 Coalition forces detained six alleged terrorists this morning south of Tikrit while targeting an al Qaeda key leader responsible for coordinating attacks on coalition and Iraqi forces.
This terrorist leader also is believed to use kidnapping, extortion and manipulation of the fuel market to fund his terrorist operations, U.S. officials said.
An Iraqi civilian also was injured during the operation when coalition forces breeched the door of a targeted building. She was treated on scene by military medical personnel and transported to a military medical facility for further treatment.
“Al Qaeda in Iraq has a total disregard for the sanctity of human life, and they continually place innocent Iraqis in harms way in the midst of their terrorist activities,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.
Elsewhere today, during early-morning raids east of Balad, coalition forces detained 11 suspected terrorists for association with a high-level foreign terrorist facilitator with links to the foreign terrorist networks in North Africa, Europe and the Arabian Peninsula. During the raid, three armed men were observed maneuvering toward ground forces. Responding to the immediate threat, ground forces engaged the armed terrorists, killing one.
The remaining two terrorists moved into a tactical fighting position, which resulted in ground forces calling in close-air support to engage the armed terrorists in their fighting position. Ground forces assessed that both terrorists were killed, officials said.
In other operations today:
— In the northern city of Mosul, coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists, one believed to be a key leader in the Mosul al Qaeda network. The targeted individual is suspected of leading a sniper cell and a network planting bombs that have killed multiple civilians, as well as participating in an attack on an Iraqi national guard building in western Mosul.
— During operations to the west and north of Tarmiyah, three suspected terrorists were detained for their association with an al Qaeda in Iraq emir in the area. During coalition operations targeting associates of the same al Qaeda emir, ground forces were fired on by a terrorist dressed in women’s clothing.
— In southern Tarmiyah, coalition forces detained one suspected terrorist for his association with al Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders who use the area south of Tarmiyah as an attempted safe haven from coalition forces. “There are no safe havens for al Qaeda in Iraq,” Garver said. “Coalition forces continually seek out and expose the terrorists in every nook and cranny where they seek to hide.”
In operations yesterday, coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists in Baghdad and Tarmiyah. The targeted individual in the Baghdad raid, a suspected key operative in the deadly Baghdad improvised-explosive-device and car-bomb network, was successfully apprehended by ground forces during a precision raid. A close associate of the al Qaeda Baghdad emir and another al Qaeda operative were detained in Tarmiyah.
Also yesterday, coalition forces captured what are believed to be terrorists with ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Quds Force from Iran in a raid in Shulah. The captured suspected terrorists are believed to be key players in a major network for smuggling weapons and components of explosively formed penetrators from Iran into Iraq to be used against coalition forces.
Coalition troops continue to conduct highly successful raids to capture these terrorists who bring EFPs and other lethal aid from Iran into Iraq,” said Army Maj. Marc Young, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “Iranian influence is hindering the prospects of peace and stability in Iraq. We remain committed to dismantling terror networks that seek to kill innocent Iraqis and coalition forces.
In other operations this week, based on tips from an Iraqi citizen, coalition troops conducted a mission to remove illegal weapons from western Mosul neighborhoods July 30. Coalition troops captured an individual with a substantial weapons cache containing an anti-aircraft gun barrel, an anti-aircraft gun receiver, a sniper rifle, 2,000 rounds of machine gun ammunition, two AK-47 assault rifles, three rocket-propelled grenades and miscellaneous improvised explosive device-making materials. Two suspected terrorists also were detained for interrogation.
Iraqi security forces with U.S. Special Forces soldiers as advisors detained two suspected al Qaeda terrorists while conducting an intelligence-driven operation in the Doura neighborhood of Baghdad on July 29. Iraqi security forces also seized an AK-47, two loaded magazines and more than $3,500 in U.S. dollars. After completing the raid, Iraqi and U.S. forces received enemy fire from several buildings across the street. After positively identifying four armed insurgents, U.S. Special Forces soldiers called in precision aerial fire that resulted in four insurgents killed.

Italy faces its "biggest terrorism risks" from North African jihadists, including some linked to Islamist networks in the Balkans, the Middle East and Central Asia, according to a report by the Italian secret services.
"Collaboration and synergies" exist between radical groups within the North African community in Europe and Italy and "events in Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria", the secret services said in the latest update of a periodical report presented to the Italian government on Wednesday.
The report comes just over a week after police arrested three Moroccans - including a local imam - in the central city of Perugia on suspicion of running a "terror school". The imam was found in possession of chemicals that investigators said could be used to manufacture explosives and poisonous substances.
"Certain nationalist and neo-[Muslim] fundamentalist factions, in opposition the governments of their [North African] coutries of origin, have developed new initiatives aimed at building a profile in Europe so as to influence the [numerically] substantial [North African] immigrant communties", in Italy and Europe, the report said.

Karachi, 1 August 2007
Maulana Jalaluddin Haqqani, a cleric who first rose to fame fighting Soviet occupation forces in the 1980s, is the mastermind behind recent kidnappings in Afghanistan, well-placed sources have told Adnkronos International (AKI).
The 50-year-old Jalaluddin Haqqani, is considered the Talban's second-in-command after the Islamists' traditional spiritual leader Mullah Omar. While hailing from the Afghan province of Paktia and Khost, Jalaluddin has long been based in North Waziristan were he has also run a seminary.

Al-Qaida manipulates videos, images, says Black Hat speaker
August 1, 2007
Posted by Robert Vamosi LAS VEGAS--In a presentation at the Black Hat conference here Tuesday, Neal Krawetz of Hacker Factor showed how basic manipulations to images can be revealed through digital analysis. After presenting on the specific techniques he used, Krawetz launched into what he called the case of "Dr. Z," who happens to be Ayman al-Zawahiri, the No. 2 man in al-Qaida.
Using a photo that originally appeared on December 20, 2006, in USA Today, al-Zawahiri appears to be seated before a large banner with a desk underneath. On the desk, in the photo, is a tiny cannon. Yet in the text, al-Zawahiri is described as sitting with "a rifle behind his shoulder that was leaning against a plain brown backdrop."
Using the techniques demonstrated earlier in the talk, Krawetz deconstructed the image to show a halo around al-Zawahiri that suggests that he was likely sitting in front of a monochromatic screen. Even the letters on the banner had been altered. Further, the overall image had been cropped from the original. Krawetz showed another image of al-Zawahiri from July 27, 2006, showing him seated in what appears to be a television studio. Krawetz said many people who saw this video were outraged that he could sitting in a television studio somewhere, yet the U.S. government couldn't find him.
Image analysis suggests that the studio and the various pictures positioned in the studio around him were added later. Again, a halo around al-Zawahiri suggests that he was shot in front of a monochromatic screen and pasted into a new background.
The studio background behind al-Zawahiri includes five different elements placed within the shot: The picture of Mohammad Alef is taken from a video of a wedding ceremony. The picture of the Twin Towers and the picture of Mohammad Atta are both taken from the 911 Commission report. Meanwhile, the studio itself appears created; the lighting suggests that the wall is an unlikely 1 foot behind al-Zawahiri, for example.
Krawetz found an image from the SITE Institute, an organization that tracks terrorism worldwide. (SITE stands for Search for International Terrorist Entities.) The image was intercepted before it was released by al-Qaida. In the SITE video, al-Zawahiri appears before a blackened backdrop. In the upper-right corner, there appears to be the edge of a wall or screen. By adjusting the contrast, Krawetz could see that the wall behind al-Zawahiri is a draped backdrop. Krawetz didn't show the final al-Qaida image, but it likely included a composite of images designed to disguise his true location and press a specific message. As was the case in the final image Krawetz showed.
An image of Azzam al-Almriki, another member of al-Qaida, showed the young man seated in an office with a computer and a stack of books. Image analysis shows that the books were added. What an odd detail, yet it must be there to convey added meaning. Throughout his demonstration, Krawetz did not speculate on the reasons behind al-Qaida's image manipulation. His interest is only that the images were manipulated and that the specific changes could be revealed.
