US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

“Mystery powder might be
from DTE coal plant”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A powder-like substance that was deposited over much of the Bolles Harbor area Monday might have been discharged from one of the smokestacks at Detroit Edison Co.’s Monroe Power Plant, investigators say.

“Apparently some time last night around the time this whole thing started, the Detroit Edison coalburner there did have a release,” said Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Brett Ortolano.

“The material we found is consistent with what would be released. DTE is sending out a crew to take a sample and is following the procedures for reporting it through the DEQ (Department of Environmental Quality),” he said. “We believe it’s highly probable that’s what was experienced.”

“We believe it’s probably coal residue or coal dust. That’s consistent with an independent witness who said something came out of the stacks and with what Detroit Edison said happened at the plant.”

Residents in the coastal area of Monroe Township found the talcum-like substance, described as ranging in color from white to tan to brown, covering cars, porches and other surfaces around their homes.

“It’s not really believed to be hazardous at this point in time,” Capt. Ortolano said. “We’ve checked with Mercy Memorial Hospital and have had no reports of ill health effects. We’ve had no reports of any adverse reactions.”

He said one resident complained of getting the dust in his eyes, but the nature of the complaint was minor.

It’s believed the discharge occurred between 8 and 8:10 p.m. Monday. Detroit Edison officials said they still are trying to confirm the source of the powder.

Although a small aircraft was seen in the area at the time of the first reports, Capt. Ortolano said that report apparently just coincided with the timing of the stack release.”

About those little blue AKs

The little blue AKs we post when a site is removed from a server are not a claim of responsibility. In fact, they are not even a sign that we think the removal of any given site was a good idea (and there is no value in letting the bad guys know which sites we like and which ones we don’t like).

What with all the sites being shut down right now we thought it was a good time to issue this reminder.

If you’re not happy about a certain site going offline recently, we may very well feel your pain.

If you are busy filing complaints with service providers, consider the following: a jihadi site is like an informant. If you kill it, it doesn’t talk any more.

On the other hand, the better the informant, the better placed the informant is inside the targeted organization. So if you let the guy live to provide more information, you also let him live to continue to be part of the problem.

It is necessary to strike a balance between the need to acquire information about the adversary and the need to defeat the adversary. Finding that balance is difficult under the best of circumstances. These are not the best of circumstances.

While websites are not people, the victims of terrorists *are* people - the consequences of failure to strike the right balance between leaving sites online and taking them down are potentially catastrophic.

Coalition Detains 35 Suspects in Central, Northern Iraq

WASHINGTON, July 31, 2007 – Coalition forces detained 35 suspected terrorists during operations targeting al Qaeda in central and northern Iraq over the past two days.

Coalition forces captured a suspected terrorist believed to be a driver for the al Qaeda emir of Mosul yesterday, military officials reported. Based on information gathered during that operation, coalition forces then raided a building in Mosul today targeting the emir’s alleged associates. The ground forces detained two suspects said to be tied to the terrorist leader.

West of Baghdad today, coalition forces captured a suspected al Qaeda emir, believed to control 20-30 terrorist operatives. His terrorist cell is allegedly responsible for rocket and improvised-explosive-device attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces.

Coalition forces targeted an associate of the al Qaeda emir of Baghdad during a raid in Tarmiyah today. The ground forces detained three suspected terrorists.

Southwest of Taji, coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists while targeting an individual suspected of facilitating the movement of foreign terrorists in eastern Anbar province.

“These terrorists cannot hide; we will seek them out,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “The people of Iraq deserve the ability to choose their own future, free of brutal terrorist attacks.”

In other operations today, a Multinational Division Baghdad aircraft conducted a precautionary landing July 31 in an eastern portion of the Iraqi capital.

The aircraft, an AH-64 Apache helicopter, came under attack from ground fire and landed east of the New Baghdad District. The crew of the aircraft was successfully evacuated from the precautionary landing site by its sister aircraft.

The crewmembers were taken to a coalition medical treatment facility for a routine evaluation. The incident is under investigation, U.S. officials said.

Iraqi security forces, with U.S. Special Forces soldier advisors, conducted an early-morning raid yesterday detaining 13 individuals in an effort to disrupt terrorist weapons smuggling and early warning systems in the Nidah area of eastern Iraq.

After clearing six buildings, forces detained a primary target, along with 12 others. The primary suspect is thought to be a key member of the terrorist criminal network of al Qaeda in Iraq operating in the Mandali area. He is suspected of engaging in improvised explosive devices and car bomb activity, as well as mortar attacks, small-arms attacks, murder, kidnapping, ransom, and intimidation of local citizens.

Along with the suspected terrorists, two AK-47 assault rifles, three cell phones and a pick-up truck belonging to one of the detainees were also confiscated.

In operations July 29, Multinational Division Baghdad Apache helicopter crews located and engaged enemy rocket launchers in northern Baghdad. The crew reported finding 10 rocket-launching systems in an open area, possibly the same area from which a rocket attack was launched on the International Zone earlier the same day.

“Detailed reconnaissance and demonstrated aerial skills by the air weapons team were key in interdicting future rocket attacks directed at the International Zone,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Walach, commander of 1st “Attack” Battalion, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

The Apache team was conducting a reconnaissance mission when it was called by ground forces from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, to go to the site.

The ground forces cleared the Apache crews to engage the launching systems, and the crews fired on them, disabling them. A ground unit from 2nd BCT later moved to the site to confiscate the rocket-launching systems while the Apache crews provided security.

Coalition Forces Capture Three Suspected Terrorists with Ties to IRGC-QF

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces captured what are believed to be terrorists with ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) from Iran in a raid Tuesday in Shulah.

Coalition Forces received sustained small arms and rocket propelled grenade (RPG) fire from terrorists during a precision raid to capture or kill operatives with connections to the IRGC-QF. Coalition Forces returned fire on the identified enemy positions killing four terrorists.

The captured suspected terrorists are believed to be key players in a major facilitation network for smuggling weapons and components of Explosively Formed Penetrators (EFPs) from Iran into Iraq to be used against Coalition Forces.

“Coalition troops continue to conduct highly successful raids to capture these terrorists who bring EFPs and other lethal aid from Iran into Iraq,” said Major Marc Young, MNF-I spokesperson. “Iranian influence is hindering the prospects of peace and stability in Iraq. We remain committed to dismantling terror networks that seek to kill innocent Iraqis and Coalition Forces.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Map, News) - A Somali immigrant the government says plotted to blow up an Ohio shopping mall pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.

Nuradin Abdi, 35, entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley a week before the expected Aug. 6 start of his trial. He answered each of the judge’s questions with a quiet, ‘Yes, Your Honor.’

Under a plea deal, Abdi is expected to receive a 10-year sentence on the count, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years. Three additional charges were dropped in exchange for the plea.

The Justice Department accused Abdi of suggesting the plan to attack an unidentified Columbus shopping mall during an August 2002 coffee shop meeting with now-convicted al-Qaida terrorist Iyman Faris and a third suspect, Christopher Paul.

Faris is serving 20 years in a maximum-security federal prison in Florence, Colo., for his role in an al-Qaida plot to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge. Faris scouted the bridge and told al-Qaida its plans wouldn’t work, court papers have said.

Federal agents arrested Abdi the morning of Nov. 28, 2003, the day after Thanksgiving, out of fear the attack would be carried out on the heavy shopping day. He was arrested at 6 a.m. while leaving his Columbus home for morning prayers.

Prosecutors say Abdi gave stolen credit card numbers to a man accused of buying gear for al-Qaida, and lied on immigration documents to visit a jihadist training camp.

Six imams removed from a U.S. Airways plane said they would not sue the passengers whose concerns led them to being kicked off the flight.

In federal court Tuesday, the attorney for the imams said, “We don’t contemplate naming any private passenger as a defendant.”

After the November flight, the imams sued the airport, the airline and ‘John Does,’ which left open the possibility of suing anonymous passengers.

The attorney for one of the passengers says the imams’ offer comes only as congress is about to give immunity to those reporting suspicious behavior.

“The offer is only made after congress passes the immunity provision with the threat of assessing fees and costs against parties suing those making reports in good faith,” Gerry Nolting said.

U.S. Airways and the Minneapolis- St. Paul airport will ask a judge to dismiss the imams’ lawsuit next month.

SPOKANE — Could the person who started the Whitley Fuel fire last week have been looking for another target in the Inland Northwest? The FBI is now on the case after two suspicious individuals were spotted at a second Spokane area fuel depot before the Whitley Fuel depot caught fire.

An employee at the Petro Card fuel facility in southeast Spokane spotted some suspicious activity at their property located near the intersection of Sprague and Haven. The man was in the company’s yard when he spotted two men in a vehicle checking out the Petro Card fuel distribution center.

The men, who were described as having beards and wearing turbans, were driving a white Plymouth around the perimeter of the facility.....SNIP
