Correction re: the registrar of palestine-info.co.uk
It appears we were in error in naming Nominet of the UK as the registrar of the Hamas site palestine-info.co.uk. The domain was registered via the US company Register.com. Nominet is the controller of the top level .uk domain, but currently lacks the legal authority to revoke domain names.

The data here has been corrected.

Iraq Operations Net Suspected Weapons Smuggler

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 27, 2007 – Coalition forces captured four suspected terrorists believed to receive support from within Iran in a pre-dawn raid in a village in Iraq’s Diyala province today.

One of the four is a highly sought operative believed to be a senior leader in a weapons-smuggling network, military officials reported.

The captured terrorists are suspected of facilitating the transport of weapons and personnel from Iran into Iraq. They are also believed to have facilitated the flow of deadly, armor-piercing explosively formed projectiles to be used against coalition forces.

“Coalition troops remain relentless in our pursuit of those terrorists who seek to bring EFPs and other lethal aid into Iraq,” said Army Maj. Marc Young, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “Iranian influence is hindering the prospects of peace and stability in Iraq.”

In other recent operations:

— Iraqi army soldiers with U.S. Special Forces advisors detained a cell leader of the rogue Jaysh al-Mahdi militia in Baghdad yesterday. The suspect is believed to command an improvised-explosive-device cell allegedly responsible for attacks on coalition forces. He also is alleged to have received financial support and EFPs from Iran, which were distributed to other cell members in the Bayaa and Aamel areas of Baghdad.

— Iraqi security forces with U.S. Special Forces advisors detained two primary targets of an al Qaeda cell in Baghdad yesterday. The forces detained their primary targets at several different residences during the early morning operation. The cell allegedly is responsible for conducting extrajudicial killings of Iraqi citizens and emplacing improvised explosive devices. They are also believed to have conducted attacks on Iraqi and coalition forces, as well as local Iraqi citizens.

— Attack aviation crews from Multinational Division Baghdad killed seven insurgents July 25 in western Baghdad. The Apache crews responded to a call from ground forces receiving small-arms fire from about 15 insurgents. The insurgents attempted to flee the area in a van when the helicopters arrived. The crews engaged the vehicle, destroying it and killing seven insurgents.

“Conducting close-combat attacks are one of our primary tasks during our daily mission sets,” said Army Capt. Scott McCraney, the pilot in command for the mission. “We were able to successfully destroy the van and engage the insurgents that were firing on (the troops).”

Great analysis 'Zilla. Care to speculate on possible trigger scenarios? What role might Hamas and Hezbollah play since they might effectively be inside the wire already? What about possible spinoff attacks here in the USA as a result of US military support of Israel? I kinda discount that, actually. But it's possible.

If Iran is the initial target for it's nuke threat does the US strike them first or act as support for Israel? Because if Israel acts first in aggression (they see it as self preservation & of course they are 100% correct) it's instantly.... I would think a regional war with all Arab nations aligned and unified. Does that include the House of Saud?

This brings another factor to the board: Keeping in mind the alliances that caused Europe to explode for WWI how will our "EU" allies within NATO react when the supply of OIL is threatened by such a conflict? Is it going to be everyman for himself or will they turn against us politically and maybe militarily? Or will they stand firm on our side or will they claim "neutrality?"

Finally, 'Zilla, forgive me if you already covered this in whole or in part in your previous analysis, but I just got home from the oral surgeon. I had some lumps on my tongue carved out for biopsy and I'm a little bit shaky. But reading and writing does me good as a distraction. I waited in the doctors waiting room for over FOUR hours today. Part of that was on the floor for the lack of chairs available. I can only shudder at the thought of universal health care. Well, at least I got to finish the last book in the Harry Potter series.

Well, last year it was the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers. There are a few that come to mind.

1. No precursors - surprise attack, possibly after entering into some kind of 'peace talks'. That worked for them in '73 and their only hope to get a quick cheap shot in first.

2. Domestic upheaval in Israel, possibly due to increased provocation by Hamas and assassination of Jewish leadership.

3. A strike against Iran by either the US or Israel.

4. Israel moves in big time into Gaza, escalates with Hezbollah firing rockets in support and then Syrian intervention.

What role might Hamas and Hezbollah play since they might effectively be inside the wire already?

They will form the other two fronts. Hezbollah particularly has plenty of rockets and is in a strong position. Only drawback is that they may end up crossing it up with UN forces who may not sit as passively as last time. (BTW the French carrier Charles DeGault is in exercises with the Enterprise and was earlier in exercises in the Persian Gulf area - when was the last time something like that happened?).

What about possible spinoff attacks here in the USA as a result of US military support of Israel? I kinda discount that, actually. But it's possible.

Yes, possible as Hezbollah has presence here. Since they are not under AQ control, but Iran, they may hold their fire, waiting for a strike against Iran.

I don't think it will blow up quite in that fashion. The other oil nations in the Persian Gulf see Iran as a serious threat to them and would quietly rejoice in Iran's downfall. Remember that Iran's proxies - Hezbollah- received zip, zero, nada support from the other arab countries in general. In fact they were almost supportive of Israel. The Saudis are wusses, use to having others do their dirty work. At worst they may play the oil card, not more. Egypt would likely try to keep out as well. There is currently no trend to join with Syria and to align themselves that way would encourage the radical Islamists already threatening the Egyptian government to push harder. Most likely any alliance would be Syria and Iran.

As far as us striking Iran first, in today's climate there would have to be something very solid for 'W' to use as justification.

Is it going to be everyman for himself or will they turn against us politically and maybe militarily? Or will they stand firm on our side or will they claim "neutrality?"

Making me work the crystal ball hard tonight lol. If Israel were to strike Iran first, they may make noises, but would be quietly happy. The Brits, Pols and others would still be in our corner, France likely leaning towards us now. Again, there would be no love lost by the other oil producing nations is Iran got whuped. They may make noises and use oil to prevent too much western intervention, but thats about all they'd do.

I waited in the doctors waiting room for over FOUR hours today.

Ouch! Hope everything worked out so you don't have to repeat it.

Cops find empty trailers belonging to hijacked big rig, truck still missing

Published Friday July 27th, 2007

TORONTO (CP) - Police say they’ve found the trailers belonging to a big rig hijacked earlier this week.

Toronto police say a 53-year-old man was forced from his tractor-trailer while he was driving in Toronto at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

The man was found bound, gagged and stuffed into a car parked in a commuter parking lot on Highway 6, south of Highway 401, in Guelph early Thursday morning.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Police say the truck was carrying about 20,000 kilograms of nickel oxide sinter, also known as “nickel sand.”

Authorities say they’ve recovered the two trailers but not the product or the truck.

The stolen vehicle is described as a 2004 International truck with Ontario licence plate number 524 2PB.

Police continue to investigate the case and are asking any witnesses to come forward.
