US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

Pipe Bomb-Like Device Explodes at Disney

ORLANDO (AP) — A device similar to a pipe bomb exploded in a trash can early Monday at a remote parking lot at Walt Disney World, authorities said. No one was injured and no serious damage was reported in what officials called “an isolated incident.”

Dead US diplomat in Cyprus ‘stabbed himself’

The US embassy’s defence attache in Cyprus was found dead on Monday on a hilltop in a remote part of the Mediterranean island after apparently stabbing himself in the neck, officials said. Thomas Mooney “died as a result of haemorrhaging after the infliction of an injury to the neck,” an official involved in the post-mortem told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“The injury was compatible with self-infliction. There was no evidence of foul play whatsover,” the official said, adding that the wound was caused by a sharp instrument and that the body was in a state of decomposition.

Police confirmed he had died as a result of a large wound to the neck, but declined to describe it as suicide, which is illegal in Cyprus.
So not only did the poor guy off himself, he broke the law to it? Wonder what his jail sentence will be?

COLUMN SNIPPET: “On Aug. 15, 2002, I presented my part of a composite Pentagon briefing on al-Qaeda and Iraq to George Tenet, then CIA director. In his recent book, “At the Center of the Storm,” Tenet wrote that I said in opening remarks that “there is no more debate,” “no further analysis is required” and “it is an open-and-shut case.”

I never said those things. In fact, I said the covert nature of the relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda made it difficult to know its full extent; al-Qaeda’s security precautions and Iraq’s need to cloak its activities with terrorist networks precluded a full appreciation of their relationship. Tenet also got the title of the briefing wrong. It was “Assessing the Relationship Between Iraq and al-Qa’ida,” not “Iraq and al-Qa’ida — Making the Case.””

As for my earlier post, from all the research I have done, the women arrested was the wife of the one of the doctors. So disregard that last past, I must of been hearing things.

Man arrested at Stansted Airport (UK)

A man has been arrested by police investigating a suspect bag which temporarily closed Stansted Airport. Officers said bomb disposal experts were checking the bag found near the entrance shortly before 1900 BST. A police spokeswoman said the airport was operating normally from 2035 BST and there was "no cause for concern". It came after armed police stepped up their presence at the airport following the failed car bombings at Glasgow Airport and London.

The police spokeswoman said: "With the current heightened security situation Essex Police are currently investigating an unattended bag outside the terminal building. "At this point there is no cause for concern. Police were alerted to the bag at 1850 BST. "A man was arrested when he returned to the bag and said it was his property. "Police had some concerns over the contents of the bag so the man was detained for questioning.

A cordon was placed around the bag which is being examined. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire reporter Emma McLean, who was on a flight to Stansted from Edinburgh, said no one was being allowed in or out of the airport for a time. Ms McLean said earlier: "Police officers started cordoning off various parts of the airport. "They started moving people from the front to the back of the airport. All the shops had to be closed.

"There must be a couple of hundred people here waiting to leave the airport. "From what I understand flights are still departing from the airport but people can't get in and out of the airport. "Police have just told us a package was found at the front of the airport." Roddy MacPhee, 64, who had flown to Stansted from Glasgow said: "There is an armed response unit, sniffer dogs, a bomb disposal unit and the fire brigade here. "Passengers are being pretty patient, but we are unaware of what has happened." Patrols at the Essex airport were stepped up after a burning car was driven into a terminal door at Glasgow on Sunday.

Man ticketed after riding bike on airport runway

LINCOLN, Neb. - Lincoln police ticketed a 39-year-old man yesterday after he rode his bicycle on to the tarmac at Lincoln Municipal Airport. Police say Jeffrey Larson was ticketed on suspicion of trespassing.

Police say a former police officer now working security for the Lincoln Airport Authority caught the man riding around on a runway at the airport. Police say the man told them he had just left a nearby restaurant and was trying to get to the Air Park, but had gotten lost on the way. Authorities were not sure how Larson got through airport security.

Suspicious packages recovered from water off Co Cork

Dozens of suspicious packages have been pulled from the sea where rescuers are searching for a man missing off the west Cork coast this afternoon.

The missing man is one of three young English nationals who were on an inflatable dinghy that capsized around a mile from shore between Mizen Head and Three Castles Head some time this morning. One man swam to shore and raised the alarm and a second was later rescued from the water. Eyewitnesses say at least 50 suspicious packages have also been recovered from the water by the coastguard. They also say there is a large garda presence in the area.

Hundreds of militants from 1992-97 civil war freed from Tajik prison under amnesty

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan: More than 650 Islamic militants who fought against the government during Tajikistan's 1992-97 civil war have been released from prison as part of a presidential amnesty, officials said Monday.

Late last month, parliament approved the measure proposed by President Emomali Rakhmon, pardoning militants and warlords imprisoned for crimes committed during the war that took about 100,000 lives and made the ex-Soviet nation one of the world's poorest countries. Khudomon Muborakkadamov, a prison official with the Justice Ministry, said 685 inmates — including 291 women — had been released since the amnesty went into effect.

Even though the amnesty did not apply to those convicted of terrorism, Muborakkadamov said 17 of the pardoned women had been convicted of participating in Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a group seeking to create a worldwide Islamic state that is banned in Tajikistan. The official said it was done "out of humane considerations."

Last week, Tajikistan celebrated the 10th anniversary of a U.N.-brokered power-sharing agreement that ended the five-year war between Rakhmon's hard-line secular government and the mostly Islamic opposition. Opposition and critics say Rakhmon has tightened his grip on power by jailing former loyalists as well as wartime opposition leaders on various criminal charges.

11 militants held in Pak with missiles

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani forces have arrested 11 militants and recovered huge cache of weapons including rocket launchers and missiles in special security operations in the country's restive Balochistan province.

The insurgents were arrested with weapons including 2 rocket launchers with 40 missiles and 23 kg of explosive material in special operations during the last two days in Sui sub division area in Baluchistan’s Dera Bugti district, the Online News said.

8 militants arrested with explosives, bomb-making equipment

Security forces on Sunday arrested eight suspected militants of a banned group and foiled their plan of 'terrorist activities', a senior police officer said. The suspects were arrested during a raid on a house in the central Pakistani city of Lahore, police officer Malik Muhammad Iqbal said at a news conference.

Leader of the group, Safeer Ahmed alias Muhammad Aziz, was wanted by the police for his involvement in terrorist activities, Iqbal said. The government had announced one million rupees reward for information leading to the arrest of Safeer Ahmed, he said. The police officer said that Mufti Sagheer, one of those arrested, was an expert of making explosives.

He added that explosives and equipment used in bomb-making were recovered from the suspects. Iqbal did not mention the name of their organization but said they were linked to the Taliban.
