Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff is blasting the U.S. Senate for failing to pass an immigration bill, and claims the federal government doesn't have the ability to enforce laws when it comes to illegals working in America.
"We're going to continue to enforce the law. It's going to be tough," Michael Chertoff said. "We don't really have the ability to enforce the law with respect to illegal work in this country in a way that's truly effective."

It’s time to eliminate the department of homeland security, then.
He's such a wuss. He's one of the wimpiest men I've every seen. I can't imagine any terrorist any where being afraid of him.
Since he's not up for the job, it proves he's the wrong man and needs to be replaced immediately.
That being said, IF, we really can't enforce our laws then granting amnesty won't give us the tools we need to enforce our borders either.
It's about time we march on DC and drive the traitors from their offices. I've had enough of their constant betrayal.
I think we should hold him and the president and others personally responsible for any future attacks in this country for the perpetrators surely came across the border in whole or in part including their weapons.
He's absolutely right about that. However, the only reason he didn't get this requirement passed into law is because his boss insisted that it be tied to amnesty.
Instead of griping about the Senate, he needs to ask his boss why amnesty must be tied to enforcement.
Why? He echoes President Bush.
All the more reason Bush needs to step down, or be tried for treason. His staff reflect his position. He promised us he's going to enforce border security and then he sends his yes-man out to tell us this crapola? I don't believe either one of them. They are worthless, and are a waste of human flesh!
I agree with you 100%, unfortunately.
No, but it's not necessary. Impose fines on people who hire them, and the jobs will dry up. With no jobs, most will go home. The less moral ones will turn to gang activity or other criminal ventures to earn a living, and we'll deport them as we catch them committing crimes.
We'll never get them all, but so what? As Andy McCarthy said, illegal immigration is fundamentally a crime problem. No crime problem is ever "solved," and no crime is ever completely erradicated. Rather, crime is managed. We throw enough resources at law enforcement to keep crime down to tolerable levels. Same thing applies to illegal immigration. Throw enough resources at interior enforcement so that the number of employers willing to risk fines and/ or jail time becomes small. There will always be some scofflaws, and some illegals will be able to make a living through ciminal ventures, but not anywhere near enough to support a population of 12 million. As soon as employing illegals becomes unaccetably risky for respectable establishments like Wallmart or Tyson, most of that 12 million will have no place to go but back home.
It shouldn't be hard to get that 12 million number down to under a million through enforcement-induced attrition, and that's good enough for me.
What a lying scrawney a$$ POS. I wish someone would make him resign.
Great. And may someone drop a grenade on both your heads.
Chertoff has “weasel” written all over him.
You have a right to remain silent. As for identifying yourself, provide your name. Further invasions of your privacy are government intrusion on your privacy and intolerable and not covered by existing law.
You are not allowed to invent new laws for imaginary solutions when they do not exist. The mantra is “enforce the law”. That is explicitly limited to current law. No new ones.
And you will be paying awards with your taxes, not for flogging.
This “build the fence” plan and “throw out the illegals” plan are not plans at all. “Enforce the law” is no plan at all. You can’t “enforce the law” if you can’t identify the illegals, and . . . the truth is you can’t under current law.
We dont really have the ability to enforce the law with respect to illegal work in this country in a way thats truly effective.
Well, Yee-Haw! Open up the prisons and let everyone go free!
What a pantload! Grrr!
Chertoff is a conspirator in my book. Considering the billions of dollars in fines available to the feds for enforcement they should be eager to enforce the law.
We spend billions on law enforcement against Americans each year and I dont hear him saying that is impossible, yet, the feds could be making money on enforcement against illegals.
If an American has a simple unregistered silencer for a handgun the feds will spend millions and send teams of SWAT after the American but they will not lift a finger for enforcement of immigration and employment laws.
1) Make is a felony to work in this country if you are illegal.
1a) Make it a felony to employ illegals.
1b) Remove the onerous anti child-labor laws and let 16 YOs work like I did in the 50’s.
2) Most cities have loitering laws. Use them.
3) Most companies who employ illegals also employ legal workers. I am certain if the legals knew just how much their illegal co-workers were costing them in taxes, they would report these illegals.
4) Take action on credible report of illegal employment.
Within 24 hours the roads to the borders would be thick with traffic heading south.
Sure, there would be a momentary spike in the cost of a burger ($1.59 up to 1.79) but that would change.
Do you seriously think the voters need to see video of a Republican administration arresting and deporting Hispanics in the middle of the night.....................?
No, but I’ll bet they (including many Hispanic Americans) would LOVE to see illegal invaders being sent packing, day or night.
“This sounds like a good spot for John Bolton...”
Hey, I like that!
You had better get armed.
