Brownback hits Romney on Agriculture
MSNBC ^ | June 29, 2007 | Domenico Montanaro

Posted on 06/29/2007 7:08:48 PM PDT by DieselHoplite

As is becoming a pre-debate/forum/being-in-the-same-room-as-Romney ritual, Brownback is attacking Romney’s controversial stance on… agriculture? (They’re going to be in Iowa tomorrow -- there’s the hook -- for the Iowa Christian Alliance/Iowans for Tax Relief Forum).“Romney suggested eliminating the Department of Agriculture and reducing farm subsidies during his unsuccessful 1994 Senate race in Massachusetts,” the first line of the memo states. By contrast, Brownback “grew up on a farm” and “has always made farmers and agriculture a priority,” says his Iowa communications director.

We’ll let you know when we hear of -- yet another -- response from the Romney campaign.

********UPDATE************

The Romney campaign got back to us with a response. Here's what they wrote:

“Governor Romney believes that investing in agriculture is key to our economy and families. America’s farmers not only provide food for the dinner table, but they will play a critical role in lessening our reliance on foreign sources of oil. Governor Romney is strongly committed to family farmers across this nation and is optimistic for the role the agriculture community will play in providing alternative and renewable sources of energy.”

Then, 15 minutes later, he praised Romney on agriculture.

“Brownback hits Romney on Agriculture”

Well, I can’t blame Senator Switchback.
If I was in his shoes, I’d do anything to divert attention from his
actions on June 28, 2007.

Give it up, Sen. Switchback. Go apologize to Hillary or something.

Brownback focuses on Romney because he is concentrating on Iowa, where Romney is strong. Giuliani supporters are not going to switch to Brownback. Those who back Romney because of Romney’s professed pro-life position just might.

If he’s going to attack, he will attack where he might get votes. If Huckabee were ahead, he’d attack Huckabee.

Switchback keeps trying to get Romney upset and Romney responds without even mentioning Switchback's name.

Brownback's obsession with Mitt Romney continues...

Is this the great statesman that voted for amnesty before he voted against it. Dead fish flop!

Romney’s response is nonsense. There is no benefit in farming ethanol. Ethanol is far more costly and less efficient than drilling in areas where we already know there is oil. Ethanol screws up the produce markets. Logically, corn is better for people than for cars. This is the first non-logical response from the Romney campaign.

“Romney suggested eliminating the Department of Agriculture and reducing farm subsidies during his unsuccessful 1994 Senate race in Massachusetts,”

And the problem is what?

It would have been a funnier headline and story if it said BROWNBACK HITS ROMNEY WITH AGRICULTURE

Romney’s response is nonsense.

That is true, as I have posted here many time, if, and that is a big if, the government and jorge were serious about doing anything, other than putting money in the pockets of their big contributors, the would require half of all cars and light truck be switched to diesel. You can make bio-diesel out of rape seed and it is cost efficient. It does not take all the labor and chemicals , equipment, and fertilizer to grow as corn. But then they, jorge and his fellow politicians are not serious about energy.

No problem at all. But if you were to believe some of the smears that have been going around, you would probably think that in the 90’s Romney was a socialist.

“Ethanol is far more costly and less efficient than drilling in areas where we already know there is oil.”

I think the idea is to do both. To diversify. If there is some sort of crisis that cuts off access to the oil supply it might be a good idea to have ethanol as backup.

WAIT A SECOND ... THAT SOUNDS SUSPICIOUSLY CONSERVATIVE.

WAS MITT ROMNEY A CONSERVATIVE BACK IN 1994?

I saw an article here on FR a few months ago that Romney was beating Brownback in his home state of Kansas. Perhaps that is why he feels obsessed with attacking Mitt.

Anyone have any updated polls on Kansas?
