Washington -- President Bush, U.S. congressional leaders and immigration advocacy groups are lamenting the defeat of legislation that would have made the biggest changes in U.S. immigration law in more than 20 years.
The compromise bill was pulled from consideration June 28 following a 53-46 vote in the U.S. Senate against cutting off debate -- stopping debate would have allowed the measure to move to a vote on passage in that chamber.
Both the bills supporters and opponents in Congress said the legislation was dead for the remainder of the Bush administration, which ends in January 2009.
The bill aimed to create a temporary guest worker program for foreigners seeking employment in the United States, a pathway to provide legal status to millions of illegal immigrants in America, while beefing up measures to strengthen U.S. borders.
Bush said in a June 28 statement that he was disappointed that Congress failed to enact the bill.
The president has said the last time a sweeping immigration bill was enacted, in 1986, the law failed because it did not secure U.S. borders, did not create a reliable system for employers to verify the legal status of their workers and encouraged more people to come to America illegally. (See related article.)
Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, the Democratic Partys chief sponsor of the bill, said that without new immigration legislation, the situation will get worse in the United States regarding what to do with the countrys estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants. He voiced optimism that eventually an immigration bill would be enacted.
You cant stop the march for progress in the United States, he said.
California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein also said she expected the eventual enactment of a comprehensive immigration reform bill. We will be back, she said.

But celebrated by Americans that believe in the rule of law and sovereignty.
Secure the border...enforce the law. (there, we don't need congress, I figured it out!!!)
Both the bills supporters and opponents in Congress said the legislation was "dead" for the remainder of the Bush administration, which ends in January 2009.Thanks to everyone who showed up last November, else it would have passed. Thanks also to our politically saavy President for taking the blame for this from the anti-Bush crowd.
Yes, we had a Twentyeight-o De June-o celebration ourselves. ;)
Eat it, El Presidente.
Cheers!
Immigration Bill Defeat Lamented by Bush, Congressional Leaders
Just tooooo bad! The bill was tooooooo bad! I for one am not sorry they are lamenting while I am celebrating! :)
The Swimmer’s brain has been pickled for so long that he is incapable of coherent thoughts. Just another try at ruining Our Country. Oh, and pray tell who wrote the 1986 version, why the Swimmer himself!!
The answer is so easy. ENFORCE THE LAWS ON THE BOOKS.

The political elitists of the Beltway got a wakeup call. They really made a huge political mistake trying to jam that pile of excrement down the throat of the American citizen. Their slack is gone, they are being watched under a microscope now, and they hopefully NOW REMEMBER who they work for, who put them in Washington AND WHY, and who pays their paycheck. THE AMERICAN CITIZEN. Such a huge mistake they made. They showed us what they are will to do TO US, for their own political purposes.
Alot of bridges went up in smoke...
I just called the Republican National Committee and left a message on the “general comments” line saying that as a Party, we should stand for law and order.
RNC - 202-863-8500
And if Senator Mel Martinez is not in favor of enforcement of our present immigration and deportation laws, he should resign.
We must build the border fence, which has already been passed into law and has already been funded.
Mel Martinez is out of step with our party.
BOOO HOOO!
Been saying this for months, the Republican candidate (Fred, Mitt, or Rudy) that seizes the Border Issue as their own will be the next President. What I mean is they really sell it like Ike used “I will go to Korea” in 1952.
