Sen. Nelson's son guilty of battery on cop

(AP) -- A jury on Wednesday convicted the son of U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson on charges of battery on a police officer and resisting arrest stemming from an incident that occurred after a reelection party in November.

Charles William Nelson, 31, faces a maximum penalty of six years in prison but could also get no jail time. Sentencing was scheduled for July 31 by Orange County Circuit Judge Stan Strickland.

''While we are disappointed with the verdict, we respect our system of justice,'' Sen. Nelson and his wife, Grace, said in a statement issued in Washington. ``And we love our son and support him during this difficult time in his life.''

A misdemeanor charge of public intoxication was thrown out by Strickland, who said no evidence was introduced to support it.

The incident took place a few hours after a party to celebrate the Nov. 7 victory by Sen. Nelson, a Democrat, over Republican Katharine Harris.

Police say the younger Nelson was trying to carry a woman who had passed out on a sidewalk and pushed an officer after he was ordered to put her down. The senator's son was pepper-sprayed and handcuffed by police.

The younger Nelson, who declined comment after the verdict was announced, did not testify in his own defense. But his lawyers did argue to the jury that Nelson did not recognize the person he pushed was a police officer because he was wearing a bicycle patrol uniform rather than a standard uniform.

Nelson lives in Washington and is a Medicare/Medicaid consultant.

It's difficult to believe that the son of such a respected Democrat would commit an assault on a police officer. Especially when the son lives in Washington and has a job as a Medicare/Medicaid consultant.

I wonder how much that pays and how hard the son had to work to get the job.

It's such a shame, especially when one considers how the good Senator Nelson fights 24/7 for American families.

(I hope they throw the book at the weasely bureaucrat son.)

That’s generally what happens when you push a policeman. Of course, laws weren’t meant to apply to the political aristocracy.

When women pass out drunk on the street, do they belong to anyone who picks them up?

Most of the ones I have seen do this arent worth picking up,but then I have never attended a democrat Victory party either.

Is this how John Kerry got Theresa? After too many raisins and Vodka?

Huh? He voted for cloture 4 times on the damnable amnesty bill. Senator Nelson has got to go.

I am certain the laudable description of Nelson was... sarcasm!

If he does not receive a custodial sentence of some kind, then it will be a blatant demonstration of double standards.

I admit that I find the bicycle police uniforms hilarious.

The whole idea makes me laugh. - but I don’t believe that I would assault one for... what reason?
I guess that is something that we simply will never know. - much like teddy’s actions after drowning Mary Jo.

I do wonder if they are going to do anything at all to him. - after all, Nelson is still here and we can’t get rid of that POS either.

"Of course, laws weren’t meant to apply to the political aristocracy."

Keen bit of sarcasm, Pop!

I don't like mindless optimism, but the rejection of the Senate's "Immigration Reform Bill" might be a sign of a Revolution blowin' in the wind--the Revolutionary Overthrow of the Political Aristocracy by the American People!

Let's hope so!

But we must ALWAYS remain aware of the danger of denial and delusion! Face truth--at all costs!

That's the biggest difference between the Left and the Right: The Left is delusional, and that's why it is so dangerous--note tagline. The Right faces truth and reality.

Good question. Just for fun, lets apply my version of Occam's Razor to the question by putting every single government employed Medicare consultant in America onto an old aircraft carrier and sail that pup right to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Sink it right there and see if the entire system crashes and people start dying in the streets.

I think that nobody would notice one single thing with the possible exceptions of less public union members and a small increase in available revenues.

I guess he didn’t show the policeman his “Son of A Master of the Universe” card.

What does a Medicare/ Medicaid consultant do exactly????????

Generally, they sit on their fat asses cushioned by extremely expensive orthopedically designed chairs shuffling papers, attending useless meetings, enjoying long leisurely lunches.

Of course this is completely foreign to a wage slave like yourself who worries about losing his job 24/7. Nelson's thug of a son has a lifetime of loafing with pay, and plenty of privilege ahead of him.

At least he's not boring.

I don't understand the reason the cop got involved. I'm more accustomed to being pepper sprayed by the women I pick up.

Maybe she was just lazy.
