This isn't your father's IRA. They don't have the men, materiel, funding they used to. They don't have the Eastern Bloc or the Libyans to send them C4 and provide training any more.
If a IRA splinter group tried to pull off a big caper, it'd look a lot like an Al Qaeda attack. Or a Mafia bomb. Or a couple of clever and ambitious kids a la Columbine. Without more solid information, it's just a guess.

“Al-Qa’eda hunt after two London bombs found”

Your view: What can be done to make London safer?
A huge manhunt is under way for a group of suspected al-Qa’eda terrorists after two car bombs were planted in the West End of London.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Hyde Park, which is adjacent, was evacuated by police, although it was not immediately clear what sort of bomb was involved.
Last night police, who confirmed a definite link between the two incidents, were searching for the drivers amid fears the suspected terrorist may be part of an organised cell of extremist Muslims - which typically number up to five people. There was also widespread concern that other devices may have been planted, although police said they had no such intelligence.
However, London Mayor Ken Livingstone today said that people would be “completely safe” on the streets of the capital this weekend and he did not expect significant disruption to major events.
He praised Londoners’ ability to keep the threat from terrorism in perspective and continue with their normal lives. Today’s Gay Pride in central London, expected to attract up to 500,000 people, is to go ahead as planned.
The attempted attacks come at the height of the tourist season with Wimbledon in full swing and on the weekend of the Diana Memorial Concert at Wembley. They appear timed to coincide with Gordon Brown’s arrival as Prime Minister and came two years after the July 7 attacks on London. The row over Salman Rushdie’s knighthood may also be a factor.
Hours before the bombs were found, a message appeared on the internet, in the al Hesbah chat forum, a Sunni website frequently used by al-Qa’eda and the Taliban to disseminate propaganda. It read: “Today I say: rejoice, by Allah, London shall be bombed”. It attacked the author’s knighthood. “We, and the whole world has seen what Britain has done ... their intention to honour Salman Rushdie who insulted and slandered Islam.”
Security was stepped up at Parliament and extra patrols put on the streets in key areas of central London and across the capital as officers searched for other devices. Several theatres are situated within the security cordon and were waiting last night to see if they could open their doors. Commuters also faced severe problems getting home.”

“Car bombs come to London”
SNIPPET: “· ‘Iraqi-style’ device defused outside club
· Second explosive found nearby
· Massive hunt for culprits”
Vikram Dodd Richard Norton-Taylor
Saturday June 30, 2007
The Guardian
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Police were last night hunting a suspected al-Qaida-inspired terrorist cell after the discovery of two “Iraqi style” car bombs, which UK officials said were designed to cause mass murder. One was outside a London nightclub, and a second nearby.
Only luck and probable faults in the bombs’ construction meant that the first device, inside a metallic green Mercedes, could be disarmed, while the second, in a blue Mercedes 280E, failed to explode. Police say both were capable of causing severe casualties and were intended to have been detonated remotely, most likely by a mobile phone.
Counter-terrorism officials said the first device - made up of 60 litres of petrol, several propane gas cylinders, nails and a detonation mechanism - was similar to those used by al-Qaida in Iraq.
The second car, containing similar lethal materials, was given a parking ticket at 2.30am before being towed to a car park in Park Lane, central London.
Scotland Yard said the attempted attacks were linked. Counter-terrorism officials were last night fearful of further attacks, and were candid about the limits of how much they could know about the scale of the threat.”

Officials say the suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the case of al Qaeda operative Dhiren Barot, who was convicted of orchestrating a vehicle bomb plot involving targets in London, New York, Newark, N.J. and Washington, D.C.
Officials say a surveillance camera caught the suspect staggering from the Mercedes shortly after parking it outside the Tiger Tiger nightclub.
U.S. and British law enforcement officials tell ABC News it is increasingly clear Fridays bomb plot in London involves multiple vehicles, and is described by a senior official as a terror plot involving lslamic extremists.
If the dhimmicrats get their way and the Gitmo detainees are placed into our justice system, their lawyers will get many of them released for "lack of evidence" or "chain of custody" problems. Imagine 500 of the worst loose in America?

“UK terror threat now ‘critical’”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The UK’s national terrorism threat level has been raised to “critical” after attacks in Glasgow and London.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown urged the public to be vigilant and added: “I know the British people will stand together, united and resolute.”
The announcement came after a meeting of the government emergencies committee Cobra, following a burning car being driven into a Glasgow airport terminal.
On Friday, two car bombs were found in central London.
Ministers, police and security service officials held their third meeting of Cobra in three days on Saturday evening, this time with a video link to ministers in Scotland.
In a televised statement, Mr Brown thanked the police, the security and emergency services for the “dedicated professionalism” that has been shown in London and Glasgow Airport.
“The first duty of the government is the security and safety of all the British people, so it is right to raise the level of security at airports and in crowded places in the light of the heightened threat,” he said.

The critical threat level indicates terrorist attacks are imminent. It is the highest possible level and was also in place after the 7 July 2005 suicide bomb attacks on London.
Security has also been tightened at airports across the US following the attempted attacks.”

Worldwide Caution Public Announcement
U.S. Embassy London issued the following Warden Message on June 30:
Following terrorist incidents in London on June 29, and Glasgow on June 30, the UK government raised the UK threat level from severe to critical.
This means that a terrorist attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat. Both the US and the UK stress that public vigilance is always important regardless of the threat level, but it is especially important given the current critical threat.
Like the US, the UK shares its national threat levels with the general public to keep everyone informed and explain the context for the various increased security measures that may be encountered. UK threat levels are determined by the UK Home Office and are posted on its website at http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/security/current-threat-level/
Information from MI5 about the reasons for the increased threat level and actions the public can take can be found on the MI5 website at http://www.mi5.gov.uk /
This situation is receiving extensive media coverage both in the UK and around the world. Visitors here should be aware that the overseas media coverage may have caused family and friends overseas to become concerned for the welfare of their loved ones in the UK. Now is a good time to let your friends and family know that you are all right.
For further safety and security information, please see the latest worldwide caution on the continuing possibility of terrorist attacks (http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/warden_messages/warden_message_11apr07.html ), our warden message on personal security practices (http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/warden_messages/warden_message_19jan07.html ), and the Department of States brochure on safe travel (http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html ).

Syrian Government Paper: Blairs Hands Are Stained with the Blood of the Innocent
An editorial in the Syrian government newspaper Teshreen strongly objected to the appointment of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair as Quartet envoy to the Middle East. The newspapers chief editor, Issam Dari, called Blair a liar with a direct link to Washington. He stated that there is no point in pinning any hopes on a peace mission undertaken by a warmonger like Blair, and said that it is probably the first time in history that a peace envoy appears in full military garb and with the blood of the innocent on his hands.
