WASHINGTON - The House Natural Resources Committee announced Thursday that it will hold hearings into Vice President Dick Cheney's involvement in Klamath River water management that many think led to the die-off of more than 70,000 salmon four years ago.

TALKING SALMON
At the end of a long day, all the fisherman had caught was one small,
red salmon. He was about to kill it when the salmon shouted, “Wait,
I’m much too small!”
“Wow, a talking salmon,” the fisherman exclaimed, “What’s your name?”
“Rusty,” replied the salmon. “Please throw me back into the sea!”
The fisherman did so.
About a year later, the man was fishing the same spot when he again
caught Rusty! “Amazing,” exclaimed the fisherman, “What have you been
doing since I last caught you?”
“I’ve been sitting on the wreck of the good ship Titanic writing
poetry, it’s very inspirational there.”
The fisherman read some of the poems and was quite impressed. “These
should be published,” he said. “Have you thought of a title for
them?”
After some thought the fish said, “I’ll call them “Salmon Rusty’s
Titanic Verses.”

Not true on three counts. The farms are largely corporate. They are upstream not downstream. A more “natural” water flow would result in no water to these farms.
Loss of these fish severely damaged the small business based economy of the Oregon coast and the fallout from this contributed to the entire takeover of the OR legislature by the Demos last year.It will be years before we recover from this fiasco.
Again, another case of Republicans shooting ourselves in the foot.

This is a totally seperate issue. The species involved in the big low water dieoff were Chinook not Coho.
(For the benefit of those posting here who don’t know the difference, a Coho compares to a Chinook, as a chicken compares to a turkey.)
“As a person born and raised on that river, I personally don’t believe that the water temperature or level had anything to do with it. At that time there were big raids going on up the river on Meth houses and I believe someone got scared and dumped all their chemicals into the river. This is just my own theory, not gospel.”
I think it’s more likely that they dumped kool aid into the river.
From the fws.gov site from the study of 2002:
“Q. What are the report’s major findings?
A. Several factors — none unprecedented — combined to create conditions that led to an outbreak of two fish pathogens, Ich and columnaris. Those conditions included a large run of fall-run Chinook salmon; a high density of fish in the lower river, and relatively low flows and high temperatures. For unknown reasons, fish began arriving in the Klamath River system one to two weeks earlier than normal. But because of a lack of rainfall or freshwater pulses, the fish did not receive cues to begin their upstream migration. Because of the heavy congregation of fish, the pathogen outbreaks spread swiftly.
Q. How important were flows or water quality to the fish die-off?
A. High water temperatures were conducive to the rapid spread of the pathogens, further stressing salmon that were preparing to spawn. But the temperatures were not unprecedented and were within the range of temperatures that have occurred historically on the river when no die-offs occurred. Other water-quality factors, such as dissolved oxygen and pH, were within accepted limits for survival of migrating salmon.
The year 2002 was classified as a dry year in the Klamath watershed. Average monthly flows in August and September 2002 were the fifth lowest in the period from 1978 to 2002. The combination of low flows and high run size contributed to the outbreak of the Ich and columnaris pathogens. The low flows resulted in lower river volume, lower water velocities and low water turnover rate in the deep pools where salmon hold over while waiting to migrate upstream.
Q. Did environmental contaminants or a release of toxic substances have a role in the die-off?
A. Based upon water and fish tissue samples, as well as the fact that only some species of fish and age classes of fish died, the Service does not believe that environmental contaminants were a causative factor.”
