Gregg Comments on Immigration Vote June 28, 2007
Contact: Erin Rath/Laena Fallon
WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) today made the following statement regarding todays cloture vote on the immigration bill.
U.S. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) stated, The immigration situation in this country is a mess and this bill, which was a work in progress, was our last opportunity in the foreseeable future to take the action necessary to fix this acute problem. It is critical that we get control of our borders, and as a result of language that I included in my amendment, this bill would have dramatically increased the number of border patrol agents and detention beds, and expanded the fencing at the Southern border at a level that would allow us to gain control there.
In addition, we need a functioning guest worker program that allows people to come here and work in jobs that Americans are not available to do, without becoming U.S. citizens. We also need an employer ID system that makes it clear that when an employee is hired, he or she is here legally. Also critical, this legislation would have moved our immigration system forward to encourage capable and highly trained individuals to come to America and contribute to strengthening our economy and culture. Each of these issues was taken up and addressed in this bill.
That said, I would have opposed the bill as currently drafted because it still had some serious flaws, and it had a long way to go before it was in an acceptable form that could have been passed. I was hopeful that we could continue to work to make improvements to this bill and move this important debate forward through the amendment process. However, this approach is no longer available and we will need to find other means to secure our borders and create a workable immigration system.
"I voted for it before it, before I WAS GOING TO vote against."
Gregg isn't up for re-election, but his comments are particulary repugnant because he didn't even have the stones to let his constituents know how he was going to vote.
The old "The senator hasn't made up his mind" BS
Today is good day, but we must never forget these turncoats when it's their time on the ballot - they must not be allowed to get away with nuance and BS!
PS - I also liked his newest talking point "jobs American's aren't available to do"
They're not available to do them because they're filled by illegals doing them for slave wages - Get a clue Gregg.
Live Free or Die is dead.
Use the existing laws, dumbass.
Comment:
No Senator you are wrong for selling out America for bad legislation.
This is not the last chance in the foreseeable future.
This bad bill will come back just like an obnoxious neighbor or relative.
We the American people pay you politicians big bucks to represent the majority of citizens and their views.
It is not our fault that most politicians are out of step with America.
If you want a better bill then introduce one.
Sheesh...we REALLY have to clean house next year, you people.
I think we now know why President Bush supported Specter in the primary.
Yep! They were working on it even as they were voting on it!
It’s a mess because of people like Gregg who would happily aid illegals break our laws, swamp our social structure, risk our security and overwhelm our justice system so he, and those like him, can continue to get handouts from business exploiting cheap labor.
This whole thing was totally unnecessary IF the damn laws on the books had been enforced. There is no need for “reform” if we secure the border, jail those flouting the law, and improving the LEGAL way for immigrants to come here to be Americans.
He will have to be re-elected at some point. Hey sen., we know a vote for cloture was a vote for this bill-you are a liar. Amendments mean nothing when Dems would be putting together the finished package-loser.
BUMP
Pompous RINO Alert. Nice try Gregg - you can’t have it both ways.
“...we will need to find other means to secure our borders...”
Uh, no...all you have to do is find the musty copy of the Amnesty Bill of 1986 that outlined tough enforcement of our borders. Ted Kennedy assured us then that that bill would fix our terrible illegal immigration problem. Of course, he lied, none of the enforcement statutes were implemented, and instead of 4 million illegals then, we have 12-20 million now.
Is it any wonder that we don’t believe anything we hear from the Senate at this point?
Make a list Folks, and add any of these anti American Rinos to it that pull this stuff. The simple fact they were voting on something they didn’t read or understand should have been enough right there to bring it down. Maybe next time our President will understand that our voices can and will be heard.
Judd, the answers are not that difficult. We can’t keep redefining illegals as citizens every 21 years, so here’s what we do...finish the wall, guard the borders, deport every illegal when and where they are found, apply the existing punishments to employers of illegals...in time, problem solved.
I live in Gregg’s district. I’ve made my feelings about his sleaziness well known to him by phone, fax and email.. I told him my wife and I have long memories, and for his vote on this issue and his support of the H1-B travesty, that we would not only not vote for him again, but were going to actively work for his defeat in the next election and make monteary contributions to whoever opposes him. I also called him a RINO and told him if he had a shred of honesty he’d switch his party affiliation to Democrat so that he could be counted along with his Fellow Travelers.
I love the “ I know better than you stupid loud people-like this guy”-they are so lofty and assume everyone is stupid. I guess he didn’t know that we knew there would be no other chances to stop this bill. If he didn’t like the final product-it wouldn’t matter and he knew it-liar.
