A Day for Celebration

A cloture vote on the mis-named Bill to Provide for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (a long but must read for every modern American patriot) went down to resounding defeat on the senate floor this morning. God bless those Americans who believe that representative government still takes precedence over bread and circuses (Paris Hilton is unveiling a new clothing line, don’tcha know?). Those modern American patriots who expended the time and effort to let their views be known have succeeded in derailing a bill that would have eventually spelled the death of our beloved republic, and dealt a major blow to the foundations upon which western civilization rests.

Make no mistake about it. One of the countless reasons that this bill was being pushed so feverishly (and sometimes unconstitutionally) through legislative channels is that our fearless ‘leaders’ (our own president among them) believed that the American citizens’ attention span is short – and that, a year and a half from now, when the teeth of this bill had begun to suck the life blood out of our republic, and a third of the senate is up for re-election, the voters would have by then forgotten who supported this travesty.

We cannot forget. Treason is a high crime. And betrayal leaves a deep, permanent, psychologically disfiguring scar.

The U.S. senatorial oath reads:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

Below is a listing of those forty-six American senators who voted for cloture in order to shut off debate on a bill that placed the amassing of political power and the interests of business above the U.S. Constitution, and the safety and sovereignty of the United States. Those names written in bold type represent senators who will be running for re-election in 2008.

Make no mistake. Some version of this bill will be re-introduced – if not during this congressional session, then during the next. Every American voter needs to make it his priority to see to it that those senators written in bold below are no longer occupying seats in the senate when that happens.

Bennett (R-UT)
Craig (R-ID)
Graham (R-SC)
Gregg (R-NH)
Hagel (R-NE)
Kyl (R-AZ)
Lott (R-MS)
Lugar (R-IN)
Martinez (R-FL)
McCain (R-AZ)
Snowe (R-ME)
Specter (R-PA)

Akaka (D-HI)
Biden (D-DE)
Boxer (D-CA)
Cantwell (D-WA)
Cardin (D-MD)
Carper (D-DE)
Casey (D-PA)
Clinton (D-NY)
Conrad (D-ND)
Dodd (D-CT)
Durbin (D-IL)
Feingold (D-WI)
Feinstein (D-CA)
Inouye (D-HI)
Kennedy (D-MA)
Kerry (D-MA)
Klobuchar (D-MN)
Kohl (D-WI)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Leahy (D-VT)
Levin (D-MI)
Lieberman (ID-CT)
Lincoln (D-AR)
Menendez (D-NJ)
Mikulski (D-MD)
Murray (D-WA)
Nelson (D-FL)
Obama (D-IL)
Reed (D-RI)
Reid (D-NV)
Salazar (D-CO)
Schumer (D-NY)
Whitehouse (D-RI)
Wyden (D-OR)

Recent polls revealed that as many as eighty percent of the American electorate disapproved of S.1639. November 2008 will tell us how many of those eighty percent were weak in their disapproval or have attention spans calibrated in nano-seconds. But, for the time being, today should be a day of celebration. Although the scoundrels will not rest until our republic is unraveled, they have been at least temporarily corralled.

Between now and November 2008, it has become even more imperative for every informed American to educate those in our families, neighborhoods, and workplaces who are still not aware of what this bill entailed, and its abominable far-reaching anti-liberty, anti-American, anti-representative-government ramifications for us all.

And for that I am thankful. Hey they did listen to their constituents and not their party leaders.

Yes but state reps are elected every two years and in some states state senators are elected every two to 4 years. It would be much closer to the people.

Yup. The 17th ended federalism and ushered in socialism.

The 37 Republican Senators who voted to kill this bill ( not for cloture) deserve thanks, donations, support, and volunteers. No more bashing of them.

Yes those 12 Republicans that voted for cloture and for Amnesty are the usual McCain,Hagel, Specter, Lugar,Graham RINOS. Their record and actions show these RINOS are liberal democrat trojan horses out to destroy the GOP and the United States. Just because they call themselves Republicans doesn’t mean a thing. What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Jim, as a resident of Pennsylvania, isolating one of the turncoats on your list …

I have been battling with Arlen Specter (co-sponsor of this bill) for decades – wearing out shoe leather for his opponents (Pat Toomey and others), calling him on his hypocrisy at various meetings, etc. He was a RINO before RINO-ism was in vogue. The only reason he calls himself a republican is that, when he first ran for district attorney in Philadelphia back in ‘65, he couldn’t get the democratic nomination. So his registration as a Republican was a registration of convenience, and, in the more than four decades that followed, he has proved himself to be an elitist/globalist/socialist extraordinaire.

So, in this vote, Specter’s taking the side of anti-sovereignty was no surprise. The votes of virtually all the others on this list (with the exception of Snowe) are a frightening indication that even former conservatives-in-good-standing have abandoned ship. It’s almost as if there is someone behind the scenes holding a gun to their heads. Hard to believe that formerly integrity-laden leaders like Graham and Kyl could have signed onto this travesty.

Whatever their reason, there is absolutely nothing they can do from this point on to win back my respect … or, more importantly, my trust. This issue is a make-or-break one for our republic, and any so-called ‘leader’ who believes this legislative abomination to be good for America, has a vision of America that bears no resemblance to that of our Founders.

Thanks for your always insightful input, Jim.

I take issue with many (although not all) entries on your list of Bush’s ‘successes’ — some because they were not ‘successes’ by any conservative definition, others because their positive effects would prove to be short-lived, should this abominable bill become law (the aims of the two are mutually exclusive). Will respond in particulars when time permuits.

The enemy within:

I noticed that Laura Ingraham is already referring to Lindsey Graham as "former" Senator Graham. (Has a nice ring, don't you think?)

He won't be able to fake conservatism his way out of his impending primary defeat.

I also suspect that he blames US for his humiliating defeat (instead of his amnesty bill), and will seek to get even via "Fairness" means, as many here have already opined.

If the Seventeenth Amendment were abolished today it wouldn’t be soon enough.

As I responded to a poster above, who tried to distinguish between representative government and democracy …

When our brand of representative government was established, it was assumed that those 'representatives' (in the House, especially – but now, thanks to the 17th, in the senate as well) for whom we were voting would spell out, frankly and without equivocation, exactly what they would be 'representing'.

Nowadays, as opposed to two centuries ago, integrity is fast becoming an endangered character trait, and we voters are becoming increasingly familiar with the say-one-thing-during-the-campaign-and-then-do-something-entirely-different-once-in-office phenomenon -- which completely skews the true nature of representative government.

Yes, we do elect those in Washington to vote as they see fit (as opposed to voting on the basis of popular opinion, as would democratic rule), but it is assumed that their views will closely parallel ours on most major issues, since we presumably put them there for that very reason.

Our elected representatives are elected because they claim to represent our views, but, more often than not, they no longer do. An ever increasing majority of them carefully study popular opinion in order to parrot our views during the campaign, and then, once elected, they vote based on promises of power or the realization of their own (often hidden) political agenda. This sad (and relatively recent) state of affairs inserts a mighty powerful, and dangerous, skew into the concept of ‘representative government’.

That isn't to say that representative government should revert to democracy (democracies don't work). I'm simply saying that the 'conflict' (between popular opinion and the votes of our representatives) has been exacerbated (to the detriment of true 'representation') by their disingenuousness when running for office, and their allegiance to the amassing of power and the voices of special interest groups, once they achieve it.

... this President is ignoring the duty that he is mandated to perform under Article II Section 3 of the Constitution i.e. "...he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed...".

That's the bottom line in all of this.

How about posting an essay with that as the subject, once you return from vacation? And send out a clarion call for those 'others' that you want to join you in your crusade.

(Be sure to ping me to it! :)

My two cents......

Yes, we, the American people deserve a bunch of kudo’s for proving that the system worked...!!!! ;)

However. In my never so humble opinion, this is not dead. There are certain personality-types such as Kennedy, GW, Feinstein, etal, who can NOT lose. It’s not within them....they must be right and they WILL be right, no matter who they hurt along the way. Including our country.

This is the time for us to be EVER diligent...there are some big things either on the table already, or being worked on behind closed doors:

Total gun control
Talk radio
The freedom to post on forums such as this
That wall that MUST be built
The ILLEGALS who MUST be deported and yes, it can be done....
The NAU...

Please, FRiends, let’s not lose sight of the goal. That being, to protect this Republic at all costs...

DISCLAIMER: This all has probably already been stated but hey. ;)
