Mum Warner likely to move on (VA retirement alert)
The Washington Times ^ | June 26, 2007

Virginia Sen. John W. Warner has said little about whether he will run for re-election, but the 80-year-old Republican is giving clear indications that he will not return for another term and that his coyness is merely an attempt to help Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, a fellow Republican, replace him.

"There has been considerable discussion about the possibility that [Mr. Warner] might delay an announcement of candidacy, then announce he wasn't going to run, to allow Congressman Tom Davis to build up at the beginning of the campaigns, which would give Davis an advantage," said Morton C. Blackwell, chairman of the Virginia's Republican National Committee and leader of the conservative Leadership Institute.

Yup.

It is Mark’s seat for the taking.

You must have missed the fact that Mark Warner, who was going to run for President, has completely disappeared from the political landscape.

Something about him having an "intern problem".

Not likely he can replace John Warner now, and particularly since the Old Guard (circa 1865) has demonstrated with Webb that they can insert a neo-fascist into the Senate with impunity ("impunity" being the ultra-anti-semitic owner of the Washington Post).

Somebody else will have to do the job. This Davis guy is my Congress-critter. He's a little too RINO, but he can probably beat any Democrat (except another neo-fascist).

George may have had the right idea taking the fight to them, but he has been hopelessly outclassed in the long-term ‘strategery’ of dealing with this new foe.

While true, I don't necessarily fault him for that. Who knew these crazies were so willing to die for such a lost cause? Where he does deserve condemnation is for not adjusting to the conflict once it was known. Sending our troops in to die on foot or in Hummers is foolhardy. It's like trying to find one flea at a time. Just bomb the hell out of them and kill them all where they hide.

More bombs/less bullets = less dead Americans.

George Allen already announced that he wouldn’t run.

Perhaps his mind can be changed. We need him back in the Senate. He'd have a great shot at winning.

That will be one less liberal Senator to worry about. Maybe we can get Rick Santorum to replace him.

Sadly Rick has the pro-abortion crew’s target squarely on his back.

Unbelievable that PA replaced him with the clueless stooge, Bobby Casey.

Rick would be good to get in the helm of the RNC though, and kick that bum/TRAITOR Martinez out.

Is this “replacement” hand-picked? If so, I don’t even want to consider him.

Davis represents a move to the LEFT, as he is more Socially liberal than Warner. If Davis gets the nomination, we will lose this seat if Mark is the Dem nominee. Conservatives will either not vote or a 3rd party candidate will arise (and we all know what happened in 1994 when the RINOs refused to get on board with Col. North).

"Davis is a little better than Warner, but still a RINO."

Nope, he's worse. Warner got a 64 from the ACU (81 lifetime), and Davis got a paltry 56 (just a few points away from outright liberal Republican), a 70 lifetime (but hasn't scored that in several years). We need to put up a real Conservative here, either Randy Forbes or even Jim Gilmore.

True, but what do we know about the other guy?

Tom Davis, to his credit, has tried to reach out to cosnervatives. They grudgingly supported his reelection bids, and appreciate his work with the NRCC during the 1990’s.

The big question is whether this will be enough to get their support for a U.S. Senate bid, which is a much bigger task.

Sadly, hell! I want my legislator to be an enemy of the left. The pro-abortion crew is in the minority. I am sick and tired of cowardly Republican!

I’m just sayin that Rick would have an uphill battle being the #1 target of the pro-abortion folks. Maybe in some states that would fly, doubt so in VA.

The ‘90s are a long time ago. Lindsey Graham still had integrity in those days, and Trent Lott still had a shred of dignity. Putting up Davis will go against everything we see as wrong with Congress today. Run him in Massachusetts, but not Virginia. I also heard Dick Obenshain’s daughter, Kate Obenshain Griffin, may run for the seat. That would be a nice tribute to send the daughter of the Conservative legend that would’ve been the Senator from VA rather than the horrid RINO John Warner 30 years ago. The only downside is that she didn’t have a lot of luck as Chair of the VA GOP recently (though it’s not entirely her doing).

I’m sure that Kate Obenshain Griffin is a great lady, but does anyone in Virginia know who she is?

We know what we’ve got. That considered, it would be worth a roll of the dice.

The name Obenshain is gold to the Conservative grassroots in VA. But whether she is as well known as the other Republicans, debatable. She obviously isn’t as well known as Mark Warner (but then, neither are the other Republicans, save Jim Gilmore or George Allen). Of course, sometimes being a semi-unknown quantity can be a help.
