Statement by the Press Secretary on Comprehensive Immigration Reform
The White House ^ | June 26, 2007 | Office of the Press Secretary

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Earlier today, in speaking about comprehensive immigration reform, President Bush misspoke. He told a group, "You know, I've heard all the rhetoric - you've heard it, too - about how this is amnesty. Amnesty means that you've got to pay a price for having been here illegally, and this bill does that." This has been construed as an assertion that comprehensive immigration reform legislation before the Senate offers amnesty to immigrants who came here illegally. That is the exact opposite of the president's long-held and often-stated position.

President Bush has noted repeatedly that the comprehensive reform he supports is not an amnesty bill. Amnesty means forgiving wrongdoing without imposing punishment. The immigration reforms passed in 1986 granted amnesty. The legislation under consideration this year does not. This measure imposes significant punishments on those who came to this country illegally between 1986 and the beginning of this year. In fact, the White House website addresses the myth that the measure is amnesty. For more, go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/06/20070608-10.html.

Jorge, it doesn’t matter what you call your sellout of America, it’s still a sellout.

OK, Tony, fine: Even if it’s not Merriam-Webster “amnesty,” it is far, far too lenient in its treatment of illegals. K? Am I allowed to say that? Or do I “not want what’s best for America”?

Amnesty would be giving illegal aliens a fixed time in which to return to their nations with no penalty. After the amnesty period has expired, illegal aliens would be hunted down, prosecuted to the full extent of the law, pay for their crimes, and then returned to their nation.

I wonder if the IRS will start using this new defintion of amnesty?

“Amnesty means that you’ve got to pay a price for having been here illegally, and this bill does that.”

B.S. “Amnesty” means to grant a general pardon. Nothing about paying a price period.

The “Price” Illegals are allegedly to pay cited in the “Bill” is even pardoned. READ IT.

Amazing.

This warranted an immediate press release.

Yet on many other topics, the WH has taken days, even weeks to mount a response.

We see where this WH has its priorities.

"Amnesty"

1. Criminal illegally enters your house.
2. Criminal gets caught.
3. Criminal has to pay a fine... but still gets to stay in your house.

"Amnesty"

President Bush has noted repeatedly that the comprehensive reform he supports is not an amnesty bill.

And I have noted repeatedly that if you remove all the parts granting amnesty then I might favor a bill.
