Washington, D.C. (AHN)-President George Bush called on Congress to muster the "political courage" to pass an immigration overhaul that has foundered for weeks in the U.S. Senate.
"We have an obligation to solve problems that have been piling up for decades," President Bush said in his weekly radio address. "The status quo is unacceptable."
The proposed legislation, drafted by a small group of senators and White House negotiators, would create a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for an estimated 12 million immigrants in the United States illegally.
The proposal has been derided by opponents as an amnesty program. Among the sticking points is a provision that would allow illegal immigrants who entered the country before Jan. 1 to apply for Z visas, which would enable them to live and work in the United States legally.
Critics have also charged that the bill does not do enough to secure the nation's borders.
"I understand that many Americans have concerns about immigration reform - especially about the federal government's ability to secure the border," President Bush said. "So this bill puts the enforcement tools in place first."
On June 26, to move the bill forward, 60 senators will have to vote to resume debate on the politically contentious issue.
To attract the 15 additional votes needed to advance the bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has suggested that the Democratic and Republican caucuses would each be able to put forth 12 amendments.
Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, speaking to Bloomberg Television on Friday, said Republican support of the proposal is waning, despite it being one of the President's top domestic priorities.
"We're beginning to see some of the people that would have ordinarily voted to proceed with the bill to say, `hey, this process is not fair, it's not transparent,''' Senator Cornyn said.
Among those Republicans who Senator Cornyn cited: Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson of Georgia.
I have found that email addresses to senators and their aids are no longer working when they did previously. Guess they blocked me since I have been emailing almost every day! Either that or they just are not accepting any emails now. Anyone else having this happen?
You know what’s a hoot? Lightloafer Lindsey Grahamnesty originally ran for congress on the “term limits!” platform. Oh yes, Lindsey saw entrenched pols in congress as a great danger, and he SWORE he would only serve a few years and go home. ROTFLOL.
Hmmm, next time a candidate for Congress says that we need to get it in writing....and notarized...with a penalty clause. Graham has turned out to be one of the worst.
Not at all. It's not happening.
What problem solver this guy is!
LOL. That’s the attitude I like!
I completely concur with your whole post. Immigration has been my issue too - just about my whole life, and I am a first generation American. I have started to wonder about EVERY thing Bush has ever told us, especially since '01. If he could so blatantly lie and obfuscate on this issue, especially with this recent MADNESS, I can't trust anything he's ever told us. And I want my money and time back for campaigning for him in '04.
Today, he'd be raking in millions "selling" carbon credits!
We didn’t have to. The anchor babies have taken care of that.
Even if they are not made legal, the anchor babies are ruining the country. California has anchor babies in elected office now all across the state. They consistently want to give everything to illegals and hispanics.
“Our senators certainly are selling themselves, to become permanent members of that power club....”
Yeah..well that goes on only as long as we the people let it happen.....
Through redistricting and other methods, our congress critters have made reelection about a 98% bet. The old SOviet Politburo had more turnover.
We have to select and promote AMERICAN candidates....term limits would be a boost...
Well, yeah. We're going to make new laws. Yeah, new, bipartisan laws. Laws that we will enforce...yeah, we'll enforce them....in a comprehensive, bipartisan way....
I’m with you on term limits. Once these people get in there they seem to think they’re Lord and Ladies for life....selected by God to do what’s best for the little people. Lindsey Graham was angry because it’s his job “to govern”...not ours. And, he seems to think making deals with Democrats is “Civics 101” What a dangerous mess this has become. God help us if Hillary gets in.
Or, sell me your industrial real estate for 1/2 price, or I will have it declared a “contaminated site”
This revealing video should be shown in every Senators' office and in the White House immediately so that they can see for themselves how devastating the amnesty bill for ILLEGAL (Criminal) aliens will be for the future of our children and grandchildren!
Yes, very, VERY scary, when "spineless" politicians are playing "Russian Roulette" with our great nation's future!!
They are doing it for two unethical reasons: GWB to import cheap labor force for his business friends (Texas???)- The other party is grabbing on to this huge opportunity to get large future "donkey" (D) votes, and once and for all eliminate (R) to a minor party sending them out in the 4th Potato Row for good. It is a SCANDAL.
Therefore it is soooooo important that the truth is being displayed in a way everybody can understand, SEE THE VIDEO produced by Roy Beck:Link description
This is crunch week. Each of us should be following NumbersUSA leads and phoning, faxing and emailing our Senators to kill S.1639 (was S.1348).
