Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/23/2007 1:28:02 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

The word of God is not, nor has it ever been meant to be tested with evidence.

Oh??

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

Malachi 3:10

The first of my ancestors who came to this country came on the Mayflower”

I know back to gramma, and that's about it.

I've wondered about more, but never really cared to find out, for it really makes no difference.

I feel for so many today to knows not who their father was, and, without DNA from all, would most likely NEVER find out for even 'mother' didn't know who it was!

Psalms 68:5
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.

Interesting, thanks.

"... made (lit, “cut”) a formal treaty (a covenant)..."

This rang a bell, so I went back and looked. My Bible (NAS) Exodus 23:32 footnotes like this:

"You shall *make no covenant with them or with their gods."

*Lit., cut

I'd say you're on to something. God "cut a deal" with Abram in Gen. 15, as it were.

Neat!

My ancestors came on the Mayflower too. John Alden and Priscilla Mullins.

Are we related? No doubt sandude and I are (since we have Mormonism in common).

It has been approximated that almost half of all Mormons become inactive or leave the faith.

"We can GUESS, but for TRUTH, you'll have to ask God."

That's fine but it's also good to understand Scripture as well as possible.

For example, I once had a goofy fellow tell me that Abimelech was really the father of the Hebrews based on Genesis 20. (Sarah is immediately thereafter pregnant.)

The claim is easily refuted with Gen. 17, 18, 20, 21, etc.

“The Church has a few rebels who leave the Church like the Tanners” Tens of thousands or more.

In my extended family alone, ONLY to FIRST cousins, there are at least fifty! But, you know what? They are all STILL counted on the membership rolls of the LDS church because they have not bothered with resignation letters, even though they have not set foot in an LDS church since they were children and most belong to other churches.

You, of course don't threaten me. Come on now...don't be ridiculous...

I asked you three questions...you answered none of them.

Maybe it is you who is threatened??? Not that I want you to be....I'm just asking questions of you.

It seems to me....er, it's my opinion that you appear to play the victim card when you get pinched. Maybe I'm wrong..

Have a happy and safe fourth. In God We Trust.

Yes indeed!! I was going to post this yesterday, but got caught up in various family 4th celebrations. In light of sooooo many digs against Romney and the Mormon Church, I want to remind everyone how much loved this great Constitution and Country is in the eyes of the leadership of the LDS Church. I know it won't make a difference to some here, but in light of the day and the reason we celebrate, I'll post it anyway.

The Divinely Inspired Constitution

Some claim to be Fredheads, but most spend the vast majority of their FR time on Romney threads. Such good works ... for their cult, not for presenting Salavation in Christ Jesus.

The finished product, some sort of blend between Spaulding’s lost tribes of Israel and the Indians, coupled with Sydney Rigdon’s (Smith’s pal) theology.

Nice try Sas. Sydney Rigdon was converted through the missionary efforts of Parley Pratt and Ziba Peterson, who gave him a Book of Mormon in the Fall of 1830. Rigdon didn't even meet Joseph until December of that year, a full 9 months after it had been printed. The rest of your post reeks of the same disinformation.

Top three choices:

1. Rev. Spaulding, whose work was stolen
2. Demonic origin
3. Amalgamation of plagiarized sources, stitched together
by JS

OOOH, I love multiple choice. But you left off the last one, and the one that some 13 million chose for thier test.

sevenbak there are NOT 13,000,000 who have a testimony of the LDS church. There are 13,000,00 members only in the inflated records of the Church.

I might be more apt to believe them and you if they would actually publish records of how many “faithful” members attend services or pay tithes (both of which are required by Freeper LDS members in order to be considered Mormon)

I pointed out one Scripture that was refered to earlier. It was about ALMS; not TITHES.

If you've got some OTHER Scriptures, I'd like to see them.

Why the desire to seperate the two and do one before men and the other before God? Is not a tithe a gift to God?

Leviticus 27:30
And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s: it is holy unto the LORD.

Thank you sir! We can at least agree on how wonderful our country is and how blessed we are to live under it's banner!

AMPU, a martyr is a person who chooses to suffer or die rather than give up his faith or his principles, Joseph Smith fits this definition as well as any other person who has ever been slain for the Kingdom of God’s sake. Note, the scriptures don’t say “no defense”, only that prophets often seal their testimonies with their blood:

1 Kgs. 18: 13 Jezebel slew the prophets of the Lord.
2 Chr. 24: 21 conspired against him, and stoned him.
Isa. 53: 12 (Mosiah 4: 12) he hath poured out his soul unto death.
Matt. 10: 39 loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
Matt. 20: 19 deliver him to the Gentiles . . . to crucify him.
Matt. 23: 31 children of them which killed the prophets.
Matt. 23: 35 all the righteous blood shed upon the earth.
Matt. 24: 9 deliver you up . . . and shall kill you.
Matt. 26: 2 Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.
Mark 6: 25 give me . . . the head of John the Baptist.
Mark 8: 35 whosoever shall lose his life for my sake.
Luke 11: 50 blood of all the prophets, which was shed.
John 10: 15 I lay down my life for the sheep.
John 15: 13 a man lay down his life for his friends.
Acts 7: 59 they stoned Stephen.
Acts 12: 2 killed James the brother of John.
Acts 22: 20 blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed.
Acts 26: 10 when they were put to death, I gave my voice.
Rom. 11: 3 they have killed thy prophets.
2 Cor. 4: 11 delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake.
1 Thes. 2: 15 killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets.
Heb. 9: 16 where a testament is . . . death of the testator.
Heb. 11: 37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder.
Rev. 2: 10 be thou faithful unto death.
Rev. 2: 13 Antipas was my faithful martyr.
Rev. 6: 9 them that were slain for the word of God.
Rev. 11: 7 beast . . . shall overcome them, and kill them.
Rev. 12: 11 they loved not their lives unto the death.
Rev. 16: 6 shed the blood of saints and prophets.
Rev. 17: 6 blood of the martyrs of Jesus.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Joseph, who uttered these words while being escorted to Carthage:

“I am going like a lamb to the slaughter, but I am calm as a summer’s morning. I have a conscience void of offense toward God and toward all men. If they take my life I shall die an innocent man, and my blood shall cry from the ground for vengeance, and it shall be said of me ‘He was murdered in cold blood!”

Mormonism scriptures, like those you refer to, contradict the Bible and I do not accept them as a higher basis of truth.

AMPU, that is choice! You make a claim about what OUR beliefs are, and then when I post what our beliefs are from our scriptures, you refuse to accept the basis of our belief because it's from our scriptures?!?!? How are we to have any type of dialog if this continues?

Your claims as to what our beliefs are are not to be challenged from our own scriptures because you won't accept anything other than the bible. If that is the case, stop talking about Mormon beliefs, for surely you know they aren't from the bible! /sarc

again, seven...

I have never said you can’t believe whatever
you want, anytime you want, based on whatever
you want and do it anywhere you want. Ever.
Do it. Listen, I accept that the mormonism
writings are the basis of your belief. Don’t
think otherwise.

As soon as you try to mislead people into
believing it is Christian, I do care. The
basis of Christianity is the Bible. If you
want to believe that other sources are the
basis of your belief, fine. Go for it.
Just don’t try to pawn it off as Christian.

You might as well argue what is Christian
based on any cookbook that made the best
sellers list in 2006. They are equally
authorative.

best,
ampu
