Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/23/2007 1:28:02 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

You Said: You admitted their are certain requirements TO BE CALLED AN LDS MEMBER; so why is it so hard for you to figure out there are CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS to be called a CHRISTIAN??

Christian is a faith, like Buddhist, Moslem or Taoist. Mormon is a Church, like Baptist, Methodist or Catholic. Baptists, Methodists, Catholics and Mormons are all Christian, because they believe Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior, in short, they have faith in Christ, that makes them Christian.

Buddhists, have four major denominations that I know of, Muslims Suni, Shia, and Whabbists that I know of. Taoist, I lost count, but there are lots. Christianity is the only religion I have seen where one group says not only are you "wrong" you are lying about what you believe, you don't really believe in Christ.

It's kind of funny actually, simply because it's so silly, how in the name of all that is funny would you know exactly what I or anyone else believe? (You don't unless I / We tell you) then you tell us we are wrong, ROTFLOL, then you wonder why no one outside of this little religion fight takes you guys seriously

As to not calling people Mormons, well, they aren't, they can still be Christians, They can even call them selves Mormonists, if they profess a belief in Mormon, or Smithists because they profess a belief in Joseph Smith. How do you think Calvanists and Baptists got their names?

There are indeed certain requirements to be called a Christian, Jesus set those requirements not some council of men.
Read Matthew 10:32-33
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
So, if we confess him, and I for one do, then he will call us his, what else is there, but to obey his commandments because we believe on his name?

Definition of Faith
Definition of Christian
Definition of Church

Sometimes I wonder if people actually know what the meaning is of words they throw around in religion discussions, just so you know what I mean, I am including definitions.

Reno232 Said: Yet I think you’ll agree w/ me that many of the opinions set forth in those creeds (especially the Athanasian creed that gets much more specific about the Trinity)are absolutely nowhere to be found in the bible, anywhere!

Elsie Said: Could you point these out; exactly?

You asked me to do this on another thread, then you never responded, do you want to find that link and reply, or is this busy work you give others who ask this question?

OK, Elsie, here is a Correct chart AS far as I can tell the research is pretty extensive.

I really hate to break it to you, only Jesus can tell if someone is a Christian or not, and you are not him.

Why do Mormons Lie?

Statement made by John Taylor, prophet, seer and revelator of Mormonism:

“We are accused here of polygamy, and actions the most indelicate, obscene, and disgusting, such that none but a corrupt and depraved heart could have contrived. These things are too outrageous to admit of belief; therefore... I shall content myself to reading our views of chastity and marriage, from a work published by us, containing some of the articles of our Faith. “Doctrine and Covenants,” page 330, .... “we declare that we believe that one man should have one wife, and one woman but one husband.” (Three Nights’ Public Discussion..., published by John Taylor, Liverpool 1850, photocopy in Sharon Banister, For Any Latter-day Saint, Fort Worth 1988, p. 289)”

THE TRUTH:

At the time of this discussion, John Taylor was married to eleven wives in addition to his first (legal) wife: Elizabeth Kaighin, Jane Ballantyne, Anna Ballantyne, Mary A. Oakley, Mary A. Utley, Mary Ramsbottom, Sarah Thornton, Lydia Dibble (Hyrum Smith’s polygamous widow), Ann Hughlings, Sophia Whittaker, and Harriet Whittaker. He had also been married to Mercy R. Fielding Smith (Hyrum Smith’s widow), but the marriage had ended in divorce. (listed in D. Michael Quinn, The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power [Vol. 1], Salt Lake City 1994, p. 597)

QUESTION:

Will Mormons here admit Taylor was a liar?

FOR MORE LIES:

Perhaps this practice of lying amongst the LDS heirarchy has been adopted by Mitt. Perhaps that is why he is seen as a flip-flopper.

I Said: ...but when they are created by known opponents to the church who will say anything... You Said: Like FACTS!!!

Interesting, I was commenting on exactly that the post I was responding to had no facts in it, and I linked to a site that even examined the metalurgy of the plates yet somehow you think that I am against facts. I think are holding your gun backwards, no don't pull the trigger to find out... Dang.

You Said: You guys never seem to dispute the DATA, just the ones who display it!

LOL, again with the backward gun, Maybe I should introduce myself. I am the Guy who quotes fromt he Catholic enclyclopedia and has a page of anti Mormon refutation as his FR home page, I quote from the dictionary when people misuse words, and I am the Guy who complains whenpeople don't link. or attribute. I am the guy who loves facts, I think you may have me mixed up with someone else...

BTW - Nice triple post (and that's a fact, Grin)

I said the Mormon heiarchy lies. I didn’t accuse YOU of lying. Sometime the lay members don’t even realize the truth of the history of the Church, the beliefs or the practices.

In the case of members unknowingly repeating a lie, I forgive them....it isn’t their fault. Resty you only repeat what you’ve been told or what you’ve discovered. I don’t hold you responsible for the lies of Gordon B. Hinckly, Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor OR Mitt Romney.

I view Mormonism as a Christian heresy, but not as a cult and certainly not as a disease.
