The Center Has Drifted to the Left (Neocom barf alert!)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Why can't the left get any respect?

Whenever you use the word "left" in American politics, you feel almost compelled to add quotation marks. Today's left is not talking about nationalizing industry, abolishing capitalism or destroying the rich. What passes for "left" in American politics is quite moderate by historical standards.

Still, cliches die hard, so you hear such 20-year-old questions as: "Are Democrats moving too far to the left?" or "Will Democrats abandon the center?"

This approach is about abstractions, not concrete political problems, and it misses the dynamic in American public life, which is the move away from the right and a discrediting of the conservative era. The political "center" of today is not where the "center" was even five years ago.

That's why every leading Democratic candidate for president chose to appear at this week's "Take Back America" conference organized by the Campaign for America's Future, the leading group on the party's progressive end. This included Hillary Clinton, whose roots in the centrist politics of the Democratic Leadership Council run deep. Clinton not only knows how much political energy there is on the left; she also knows where public opinion has moved, particularly on the Iraq war.

Clinton was booed at last year's Take Back America conference when she said it was not "smart strategy" to set a date certain for withdrawing from Iraq. She was much better received this week for a tougher stand against the war.

Clinton was not just playing internal party politics. A large majority of the country has now decided that the establishment was wrong to support the war, and that those who opposed it -- including the left -- were right.

It's like that on a lot of issues. Just a few years ago, the prevailing view held...

Gee, sounds like what happens when you use the word conservative.

The laughable ‘take back America’ conference is at www.c-span.org if anyone is in need of a serious laugh. Lot of talk....but zero action. I didn’t even bother posting the link to it this year.

The center has indeed gone left. That’s why the rinos call themselves “centrists.”

The center usually moves left the longer the Republicans are in. Then again it normally moves right when the Dem’s are in. so how is this news. But, we do have to do something different to win. I think we need to stress immigration reform(you know where we shut the borders only). End of affirmative action. And maybe we can deal with some other stuff and get away from the religious right issues for a while.

Why should we move away from the “religious right”..?

Becuase they have been demonized in the national media, you go ahead. I for one will not “throw out” a traditional part of the Reagan coalition (or have you forgotten that it was Mr. Rev. Falwell’s “Moral Majority”) that largely brought about the election of Ronald W. Reagan..set the stage for ‘94..?\

And you want to throw OUT the “Religious Right”? It never ceases to amaze plays out as “Conservative” these days..

If anything you should advocate a return to natural American religous values.. OUR FOUNDERS were (Christians, by and large, and the rest were deists with a solidly Christian world-view, btw). Not only that, but Christian Conservatives do NOT conflict with so called “fiscal conservatism” we generally believe in smaller government, fiscal restraint, libertarianism as well. It have been activist judges that have made the focus on “social issues” paramount (they are the bad guys) not “Fundamental, Religious Right, Evangelical, Christians, Traditionalists, Social COnservatives”, K?

But the MSM never describes someone views or their affiliation as “left” or “liberal” only a “conservative” view gets branded.

The left has always called itself the center. Unfortunately right at this point in history, the center probably has shifted to the left. That still leaves EJ way out on a left limb.

“But, we do have to do something different to win....”

Yeah, let’s do something different...let’s put a real conservative in for a change.

Trying to figure out what resonates with voters is what people who aren’t in touch with the nation’s voters do....like the DNC and the RNC. When you have real principles to stand on you win if the public stands by those principles. Otherwise you lose. But the candidates who try to morph into what they think will resonate are lying, cheating SOBs and deserve being tarred and feathered.

and get away from the religious right issues for a while.

That happens and the Party will leave me.

You want to do something different? How about offering a choice.

Offer no choice and the longest and strongest supporters of the Party will lose reason to be motivated.

I just love the way socialists talk about “taking back America,” as if they and they alone are entitled to it.

Dionne is not a neocon.

That's true. He's a neocom as in neocommie or neocommunist; he has a marxist domestic agenda and a supine foreign policy.

"I like that phrase. Neocommunists. - Lets make it Neocoms to counter the Neocon label that is so casually used."

I have a high frequency hearing loss. It causes trouble hearing consonants. Neocoms is fine when written. When spoken, especially with backround noise, it makes it hard to distinguish the sound of neocoms from neocons. When spoken, I'll use neocommie or neocommunist for those with marxist domestic agendas and a supine foreign policy.

Beware of making assumptions. Somebody thought I made a typo, or they thought I didn't know what I was writing about.

I guessed it. At first I said typo, but I said it. When I said com, I thought commie.

But I call the leaders of the DNC, some Judges, a lot of College professors, the vast majority of our media, and almost all of Hollywood commie blankity blanks all the time.

I'm a neo-con. As far I'm aware they don't support a socialized health care system or defeat in Iraq. You just broke the 11th Commandment!

Yep. Liberals are liberals. They don't fool any one posing as "moderate." Their votes of their office-holders betray their middle of the road rhetoric. In office, they swing hard left!

It was neocom, not neocon. It often pays off to read the thread before you post, especially when the thread isn't long.
