LONDON: Increasingly, Muslim women in Britain take their children to school and run errands covered head to toe in flowing black gowns that allow only a slit for their eyes.
Like little else, their appearance has unnerved Britons, testing the limits of tolerance in this stridently secular nation. Many veiled women say they are targets of abuse. At the same time, efforts are growing to place legal curbs on the full Muslim veil, known as the niqab.
The past year has seen numerous examples: A lawyer dressed in a niqab was told by an immigration judge that she could not represent a client because, he said, he could not hear her. A teacher wearing a niqab was told by a provincial school to go home. A student who was barred from wearing a niqab took her case to the courts, and lost. In fact, the British education authorities are proposing a ban on the niqab in schools altogether.
David Sexton, a columnist for The Evening Standard, wrote recently that Britain has been "too deferential" toward the veil. "I find such garb, in the context of a London street, first ridiculous and then directly offensive," he said.
Although the number of women wearing the niqab has increased in the past several years, only a tiny percentage of women among Britain's two million Muslims cover themselves completely. It is impossible to say how many exactly.
Some who wear the niqab, particularly younger women who have taken it up recently, concede that it is a frontal expression of Islamic identity, which they have embraced since Sept. 11, 2001, as a form of rebellion against the policies of the Blair government in Iraq and at home.

I am offended by this tent that they call the niqab. Call it what you want, dudes, but it is still a freaking tent! We live in a free society, folks. How can we tolerate one segment of our society forcing its female members to melt and roast and sweat in an ugly tent while the men sport about in regular clothing???? It is discrimation - and isn’t that illegal? It is torture. There is something inheritly wrong with this. We have seccurity cameras everywhere that cannot see through the tents - so that means that criminals can just wear the tent and we will never know their faces or even sex. Women fought too long for equality in the Western World to allow or even tolerate the wearing of the tent. Hey man - Does that mean I have the right to wear a Bill Clinton mask when I go the the bank? If Mrs Mohamed can wear a tent - then I can wear a Bill Clinton Mask.. We really do have to stop this garbage.
We are going to have to exterminate the jihadists no matter how “innocent” they are. There comes a time when you really are guilty by association.
The only purpose served by a mask is to hide your identity for criminal purposes. The exceptions are the Long Ranger and Zorro.

Its an understandable response to the western attacks of Iraq on Sept 11th 2001
My wife wears a head-scarf every Sunday (guess why). After mass, we often go out shopping or to eat. Frequently, moron liberals come up to us, shoot me a nasty look, and then tell her, "You're free! You don't have to wear that scarf anymore!" Free? Oh, just not free to decide what to wear on her head.
The real prize goes to the red-blooded Patriots who come up to us and say things like:
Yeah. Land of origin? U.S of A. We're already "back" there.
Finally, after years of this getting worse post-9/11, she bought a bright blue scarf that says "I love Jesus" in big, gold letters. Did it help?
No.
One day they should go out and gather up these women and take them directly to the airport and place them on a plane back to the first Islamic craphole that came up on the schedule. Next day they do the same thing. It wont be long before Islamic women start appearing in typical British dress.

Actually most Catholics wear their scarves only in church, so you are speaking of an unusual case. I think you are being silly trying to compare the Moslem isolation tent to a simple head covering some wear in church. Get real. I frankly doubt if anyone spoke to your wife that way. I think this story was made up. We have many ladies who wear scarves to cover their heads while receiving chemotherapy. Folks accept that and wish them well. Some women wear fancy hats to church, to weddings, military events, or horse races. This is for fun or style - not to regress back to the middle ages.
